Louisiana Governor Jindal Raises Election Funds As Economy Sinks

Written by: Stephen Sabludowsky

Buzz Right Back----E-Mail a Friend----Print Page

It’s Louisiana Christmas of 2008.

There’s an eerie Charles Dickens’s Christmas Carol feeling in the air with Scrooges of the Economy making many of us feel like paupers.

In New Orleans, today, the City Council appears poised to override Mayor Nagin’s budget veto which hits matters such as crime fighting and playgrounds.

On Monday, the Louisiana Revenue Estimating Conference adopted revised revenue estimates projecting a $341 million deficits for the current fiscal year, and a revised revenue estimate creating a projected $2 billion shortfall for the upcoming fiscal year (FY 10).

Obviously, cities and towns across Louisiana are also experiencing the economic crunch as they are trying to make the numbers work.

It certainly does not get better nationally.  Today, Bloomberg reports “A majority of the world’s biggest currency-trading firms say the dollar’s appeal as a haven amid the financial crisis all but evaporated”

Today, Morgan Stanley announced a fourth quarter loss from continuing operations of $2.24 per share, driven by unprecedented market turmoil

To put things in perspective, Michael Diresto, the Communications Director for the Office of the Commission, Division of Administration sent out an email that said, in part “To place Louisiana's situation in context, I thought you might find the following information and the attached report as useful background for comparison purposes with budget situations in other states.

From a recent report by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities:

Continuing economic problems have created budget problems in many states, leading some 25 states to reduce services to their residents….

Examples of enacted cuts to state services include:

Public health programs: At least 17 states have implemented cuts that will affect low-income children’s or families’ eligibility for health insurance or reduce their access to health care services.  For example, Rhode Island eliminated health coverage for 1,000 low-income parents; New Jersey cut funds for charity care in hospitals; and California and Utah are reducing the number of services covered. Additionally, the governor in California has proposed cuts that, when fully phased in, will cause more than 400,000 adults to be denied health coverage.”

The report also mentioned cuts for the elderly and disabled in at least 15 states, reductions in K-12 education in at least 16 states, drops in higher education funding, and across the board budget cuts in many states in the US.

Meanwhile, despite all of this misery and gloom, Governor Bobby Jindal’s campaign has sent out a email newsletter requesting money for his re-election.  In a message, Jindal said in part, “We changed the image of our state by passing some of the toughest ethics laws in the nation. We eliminated anti-business taxes that were limiting the growth of our existing companies and hurting our ability to attract new businesses. We overhauled our workforce training system to gear it toward making our people the most skilled workers in the nation and the world. We did all this and also invested hundreds of millions of dollars in our state’s infrastructure to inspire future growth, and passed the largest income tax cut in Louisiana history.

I told you on the day that I took office that our goal is a New Louisiana where success is shared by all Louisianians. A New Louisiana that is a magnet for the dreamers…the risk-takers…the adventurers…the leaders of America’s new economy…

That is still our mission, and I need your help.” (a fund raising link is inserted)

Obviously, the problems Louisiana and our local towns and cities are facing are not endemic to the Pelican state but is spread out across the globe and within the private sector.    Still, it appears odd that at a time when many are uncertain if they can afford Christmas gifts for their families, when budgets are being slashed, that our Governor who has not yet faced the real challenges as Governor is taking the holiday season to peddle for funds.

Worse, we are not sure if our Governor has absolutely written off a run for the Presidential ring in 2012.

I know many will find this scrutiny of our Governor as being nothing but humbug.  Without doubt, Governor Jindal did not cause the world’s financial problems and has taken steps to cut back government despite an increase of approximately one billion dollars in this past year’s budget.  Still, it just seems odd that we are cutting back to the bone, our economy is in the tubes and our chief of state is asking to fill his political coffers.

I know it would be unique, but perhaps Governor Jindal should have asked us to send money so we can fund teachers, the poor, the disabled and others who are certainly going to see plenty of empty stockings this Christmas.

Not that our Governor is not worthy of another term in office.  But, the days of rosy scenarios have turned black and the Governor, like Mayor Nagin, will be facing some frustrated lawmakers as they tug on the budgets exhausting the merriment of those watching.

It might be “Tis The Season To  Be Jolly” and “to give”, but with bailouts on everyone’s minds, election fundraising during this particular holiday season simply bugs the hum out of me even if we are expecting great expectations from Governor Jindal..

Well you know, they say all the fun is during the campaigning, it is the work after the results they don't much enjoy....

good lord steve - i hate to get "practical" on you, but if the economy is doing so bad, then all politicians - including Jindal - will have to start their funding as early as possible just to stay even with the previous election cycle.

It all boils down to quotas KPF.... X amount of taxpayers, + X amount of value that can be taxed = X amount of dollars collected which will = Y amount of employees on the governement payroll who's votes are 15 - 20% effective in guaranteeing the perpetuation of an agenda or a party or a common group in power... Couple that with propaganda effects (information/disinformation) such as those which are prevalant on this little bayou buzz board..... X {times} a lot more media outlets and you will begin to understand the dumming down of America, the lackluster productivity, and the mess we are going to be in..... Aside from your observation, I only see two other posts that are even close to being relevant in identifiying what the problem is, in plain and simple terms.... I think Lousyana is the most typical of the mediocre meeleemouths that are endemic on this buzzy 'opinion' gossip board article when she profoundly posts; "He gets pounded by both sides which shows he is being fair." Because a basic interpretation from a common sense point of view would be; "No matter how much you polish a turd, it will never shine, it will only stink more"...... In short, it is all about maintaining the status quo and expending a lot of mushrooms satisfied.... Mushrooms are generally kept in the dark, and fed a diet that roughly equates out to bullsh^t.............. Have fun mushrooms.... I prefer the daylight myself...

"Government this"..... "Government that"..... "Government please save us"......... In order for any country to prosper - capitalist, communist, whatever - a majority of the people have to be self-sufficient so they can support those who are not. The percentages cannot be turned on its head where a minority supports the majority. We the people are the problem, and the solution - not government. More of this and more of that for everybody may sound nice and fair, but it is not practical. If we truly want government to do what is necessary we must eliminate all unnecessary spending (273 city of NO employees having taxpayer paid vehicles, how does one justify that? How much similar waste is there in government?). I’m not an advocate for "no government", just government that exists to provide essential needs that the private sector does not, without existing for the benefit of those living off the working taxpayer. Is it wrong to desire this?

Ken, how can you say Steve is bitter about Jindal? He is simply telling like it is. I find it interesting that when he praises Jindal and says he wants Jindal to be governor of Louisiana to do his job here and to run for re-election in three years, some of you think Steve is either being too harsh or think he is being a lackey for Jindal for praising him. He gets pounded by both sides which shows he is being fair. In this column, it seems that Steve is just pointing out that the timing for raising money during a very bad Christmas when there is no opposition makes no sense. I must admit, I agree the timing was really bad for Jindal to ask for money right now when he really doesn't need it.

Steve--get over it -Jindal won-he's not perfect-your bitterness is unbecoming. Next you'll have a column on how he doesn't clip his fingernails enough for the Gov. of a state like La. !

Doubting Thomas: Thank you for your comment. My position then was based upon a comment from the Republican Chairman to me regarding Governor Jindal's promises. Things have changed as a followup column indicates: http://www.bayoubuzz.com/News/US/Politics/Louisiana_Governor_Jindal_Could_Run_For_Governor_And_President__8061.asp

What I find funny is where the author says; "Not that our Governor is not worthy of another term in office............." Hell, from all reasonable estimations, especially when I read the Guv's remark; "I told you on the day that I took office that our goal is a New Louisiana where success is shared by all Louisianians. A New Louisiana that is a magnet for the dreamers…the risk-takers…the adventurers…the leaders of America’s new economy… That is still our mission, and I need your help.” I can't help but noting that the Guv is so full of sh^t his eyes are brown.... and I don't even see him as worthy of THIS term in office..... Everyday he is in office he costs the State of Louisiana around a million dollars due to non performance and inept leadership on his part.... Let's see, 70 something million for a mud bar in Grand Isle is being pursued, and of course there is the 13 million on the MRGO that could have cost less than 5 million easily, and we haven't even scrapped the tip of the mudpile..........

The author says, "Worse, we are not sure if our Governor has absolutely written off a run for the Presidential ring in 2012". But the author also said in a posting a few days ago, that he is going to give the "POTUS 2012" topic a rest. The authour can't stop from being lured into this topic. It is like trying to quit smoking. You quit for a few days and then fallback. I hear they are selling the "Anti-POTUS 2012 talk" patch at walmart - available by prescription only:)

I agree, and one of the keys are to focus on progress, NOT ON QUOTAS!!!!! Quotas are a bookeeping falicy that leads to ruination..... Vietnam... Prime example... X number of rounds equated to X number of 'kills' in the text book world.... WRONG... It didn't work.... New Orleans needs to reverse its policies, and instead of holding its citizens hostage to serve the quota textbook style, it needs to free the people!!!!!! Without opportunity there can only be a situation of opportunists feeding on the weak and infirm....... Or the unable.....

Stephen, dear, we would agree with this: "I know it would be unique, but perhaps Governor Jindal should have asked us to send money so we can fund teachers, the poor, the disabled and others who are certainly going to see plenty of empty stockings this Christmas." Unique, no. Many leaders have been asking for help in providing for many in need at this time of year. They are not the leaders in government. Unfortunately, the government has been giving away too much over the years to many who have made a living off of those programs and still are. It is time to revamp. It is time to help those who are unable because of handicaps, age, and issues of this sort. Not time to help the lazy and those who refuse to work. Time to examine some people who make a living off the state and federal government with no actual work done.

Got a ficken preppy, never got his hands dirty or greasy one single day in his life, never went to bed hungry, never had to worry about rent, or clothes, or health care, or where his next tank of gas is comming from serving as a Governor for the people and you think he is worldly enough to understand what the common person needs? You are dellusional Steve... The guy is a hack, a schumck, a poster boy, a farce.... He is bought and paid for..... He is simply another Monkies monkey...... 70 something million spent on a mudbar out on the gulf somewhere??????? For fish? For tourism? For what?????
