Louisiana Governor Jindal: The Honeymoon Is Fading

 Who is Bobby Jindal?

Is he the current Governor of Louisiana dedicated to ensuring that Louisiana meets the Gold Standard for ethics, the Chief Executive preaching “open government”, and the convincing orator who overwhelms his harshest detractors?

Is he the state’s leader bent on attracting the best and the brightest to stay in Louisiana?  Does he want to purge forever the brain drain plaguing this state for decades?

Or, is he a politician who is “over-handled” by those who got him to the dance?  Perhaps worse, is he playing the Governor’s role to gain a bigger plum, the Vice-Presidency?

This week’s edition of the Gambit which featured an article by Jeremy Alford (after it first ran in the Independent), Jindal is presented in what I believe is a very realistic light.  Something happened to him as he chose to run for Governor.  In short, he became “over-handled”.  Instead of saying what is on his mind, he has become a politician who does not want to be viewed as fallible.  He has allowed his staff to put him on lockdown.  As a result, many members of the media are getting frustrated with his administration’s governing and public relations tactics which some of the Capitol writers are beginning to distrust.

He promised us an open government, but, as Alford pointed out, the openness is now stopping at the Administration line.  Trying to get answers from the Governor’s office is often futile for many in the media and the cries unfortunately are now becoming  more shrill.  In fact, they are portraying the administration in the most farcical of descriptions.

Currently, he is pushing that virtually all communications within his staff be confidential which is frustrating the dickens out of media writers.  His press secretary is under attack for playing Karl Rove instead of Betty Crocker.

Substantively, his ethics reform package is being challenged in the darkest of light.  Some legislators are suggesting hypocrisy--that what has been imposed upon them is not similarly imposed upon the Administration.  Others are claiming the reforms are unworkable and need radical change.

Within four months since taking office his popularity is still at substantial highs (approximately 70 percent favorables) but many are wondering if we are really seeing less efficiencies--more smoke, mirrors and definitely more raw propaganda.

I personally believe, as I have mentioned previously, Bobby Jindal has the ability to be our best Governor ever.  But, it won’t occur if he doesn’t return to his basic roots and takes control over his own handlers--not the other way around.

He cannot effectively govern if he has his eye on the next election, whether it be for Governor or Vice Presidency.

Unquestionably, the honeymoon for Jindal is beginning to end with the media.  He absolutely can survive given the current demography of the state, his ability to speak directly to the public and re-election will likely occur should he not become Vice President.   But, the road is getting much tougher than it was earlier this year and if winning elections is considered the criteria of success instead of administering an effective, efficient, and open government, then he will be at odds with the legislature and then with his constituents.  The warning signs were present during the campaign and they have become more cancerous since becoming Chief Executive.

Bobby Jindal must return to be Bobby Jindal, not Jindal the Politician.   Many observers are seeing a man with great ambition and talent who has created an inner sanctum and who has allowed them to rule the roost.  Ultimately, should this continue, he will lose credibility among those who have trusted him.

The Alford article is a “must read” but speaks of Jindal’s staff in the most unflattering of terms.   I had written months ago that it would be the staff that hurts him politically.   I believe those words have been and are continuing to ring true.  He must take a hard look at the frailties within his own administration and change them.  Otherwise, the criticisms will continue to mount, the writers will become even more frustrated and he will build up walls of isolation which is the exact opposite of what he needs to do to have an open government which is what he preached before he ruled the Capitol’s Fourth Floor.

He still has plenty of time to be Louisiana’s best Governor in modern times.  But, he must control those who protect him.  In trying to perform their jobs, they are robbing him of his own identity.  It’s time for Bobby Jindal to bring back Bobby Jindal.  Louisiana needs the man, not the politician.

Picayune is an old spanish term for "small change".....

His principles? And how, may I ask, are THOSE to be defined? Are you trying to imply that perhaps he may have some ‘unseen’ patent on the subject? I see nothing of any real substance as of yet…. merely image techniques such as those employed at a cheap nickelodeon. And then still there are whisperings of ‘Babs’ and her ‘history’….. Well, she wasn’t exactly a William P. Kellogg now was she????????? I would wonder how the subject of ‘Babs’ is even pertinent to the rebuilding and restructuring of Louisiana? She was a great boudan promoter, but aside from that she truly is/was rather Picayune in substance, as well as principle……… Katrina was only the wrapping on the box of soured goods that was, and seemingly still is Louisiana leadership……. Right now it seems that Piyush has visions much like Mussolini had for Italy and Rome….. as he attempts to invoke the grandeur and position of eras gone by. New Orleans ‘was’ the center of ‘culture and trade’ in the Western Hemisphere at one time? Well, things like roads, the automobile, airplanes, cargo ships, the industrial revolution, the advance of agricultural techniques and wide open range and territories farther to the West and North to be settled and built upon brought that to an end. In other words people had the freedom, choice, and opportunities to build vast and great cities, and impressive industries and endeavors that caused New Orleans to virtually pale, and eventually decay away in comparison. To this very day growth is occurring everywhere you look, as populations increase, so do the needs of the populace. It is a naturally occurring phenomenon. But in true nickelodeon imagery, this administration (in the same fashion as past administrations) spins the story of how it is so successful in causing business growth in Louisiana. New business in Louisiana? Define ‘NEW’…… and at what cost to the taxpayer? It would appear that the accepted concept of new business in Louisiana is construed as being the ‘recruitment’ of an existing business from one sector of the United States in hopes of it relocating here. In other words, simply moving a hole from one location to another in the yard……… One state loses, and another state gains….. Is that PROGRESS? Is that GROWTH? And how does that contribute to the prosperous good, security, and whole of the Union which we are a part of? And then one comes to consider the principles of cost………… Because in reality, it is not job growth that is happening in Louisiana, but merely more heads being bussed in like cattle to be counted for the tax roles, with the legislature eager to simultaneously vote their selves pay raises, and the state government putting even more employees on the ticket at the taxpayers expense….. And squandering money on redundant projects that vaguely project the image of merely being a “White Elephant”. And what changes? Does the crime go down? No…… Do drugs disappear? No…. Are taxes being used more prudently? Is the coast really being protected?..... NO!!! Are the marshes really being restored?? NO!!!!....... Are living conditions for Louisianans across the board noticeably enhanced?……. From my personal perspective the answer is a RESOUNDING…… NO!............ ‘The new Silicon Valley of the South’? HA!!!!!!!!! It would seem that there is huge campaign going on trying to stimulate ‘upper crust’ white collar workers to pick up and move to Louisiana….. Medical Research?.......... HA!!!!!!!!! We already have ‘medical research’ facilities and institutions up the wazoo…….. A majority of those types of industries are well rooted and established in other regions of the United States, as well as around the world…… But the citizens of Louisiana are going to be forced to pour tax dollar after tax dollar after tax dollar into these areas to generate a couple of hundred jobs that pay 35K to 130K per year…. At what cost comparison???????? I say it is to the detriment of the middle and lower income classes which are the majority in Louisiana……….. I believe a strong program of across the board diversification is in order….. I can think of at least 1 dozen industries right here, right off the bat that could be started in Louisiana right now that are the future, that have very little competition, that would be unique to this state….. That really cost very little in outgo when compared to income……… And that would provide jobs that are sound, secure, and continual for working classes across the board in a broader spectrum that are not restrained by the lack of college degrees or vo-tech courses…… Hell, in many instances a high school diploma wouldn’t even be needed, and even the least of the job billets would be able to retire a millionaire if that is what that person wants in its future……. But it would appear that ‘principles’ are keeping them from fruition….. As well as the manifestation of additional forms of freedom for many…………..

Tee Dub, dear you are right. We said things a bit differently, more genteely, in our previous posts and elsewhere. Time for Pi to start acting on his "principles" and not for furtherance of his political career.

As I have said before, ultimately history is going to view Blanco in a more favorable light than in which people have been viewing her since 8/29/2005. No, she was not effective at projecting a certain image, however she was more honest, more open and more straightforward with everyone as well as being more all about the state's interests as opposed to her own interests than this current clown seems like he'll ever be. And he's always been all about image over substance and his own career over the interests of the state. That's nothing new, really. The final kicker is that it isn't going to take two full terms for the conservative contingent to start to lose their love for him like it did for Mike Foster.

{{{{Within four months since taking office his popularity is still at substantial highs (approximately 70 percent favorables) but many are wondering if we are really seeing less efficiencies--more smoke, mirrors and definitely more raw propaganda.}}}}….. Honestly Steve,,,,,, (approximately 70 percent favorable)????? No, it is sitting around @ approx. 28 – 32%. Now if you are speaking of polls taken of people that are mesmerized by the propaganda on T.V., well, I would suppose you will get 70% of 38% of them…. I suppose it all depends on who is conducting the poll, taking the poll, interpreting the poll, or doing the poll dance….. But as far as the economy goes, there is money in all those things if approached from the right angle… So polls may be a viable marketing product for some. The facts of the matter are; 70% probably equates out to 70% of State Employees, State Agency workers, some legislatures, and the handful that CONTROL things in Louisiana…….. Not the common population… Sure, the general consensus is: Bobby is an o.k. guy. As for myself, I have no bones against him personally, after all, he cannot please everyone all the time, but he is a little ‘sheltered’, and definitely led around by more than simply ‘mere protectors’. The Honeymoon Is Fading???????? It was in the grey area within a matter of days of his taking office….. So get the basis of the poll right, and get the basis of Louisiana right….. I hate to borrow a quip from Barrack O’Blah-blah, but, uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, Louisiana needs Change, annnnnnndddddd, it needs to be a little more strongconcrete, so that more provisions for the constituency can be achieved in a cost effective and productive fashion…………………………… And it would be a proper assumption that this is needed pronto…..

"Who is Bobby Jindal?" He is who I have said he was from DAY ONE. "Something happened to him as he chose to run for Governor. In short, he became “over-handled”." Sorry Steve, but nothing happened to him. He was the same person way back in 2004. He surrounded himself with the same kind of people back then (Timmy Teepell was his campaign manager in 2004, remember?). He was always over handled. Unfortunately, the media was too busy fawning over the "wunderkind" to grasp their sense of journalistic integrity and do some actual research on who Bobby Jindal is. "Instead of saying what is on his mind, he has become a politician who does not want to be viewed as fallible. He has allowed his staff to put him on lockdown." He was on lockdown in 2004! He refused to answer candidate surveys. He refused to attend forums (he only attended the Alliance for Good Government forum). He only met with people in private, well handled, events. Do I really have to give you a history lesson? "As a result, many members of the media are getting frustrated with his administration’s governing and public relations tactics which some of the Capitol writers are beginning to distrust. " The only reason the media is getting frustrated NOW is because, for some reason, they have chosen NOW to start paying attention! "but many are wondering if we are really seeing less efficiencies--more smoke, mirrors and definitely more raw propaganda." Steve, it has always been smoke and mirrors and propaganda. Why can't you understand that? Are you just afraid to say it and get yanked from Sellers magic list again? If so, that proves my point. "I personally believe, as I have mentioned previously, Bobby Jindal has the ability to be our best Governor ever. " Why? "Bobby Jindal must return to be Bobby Jindal, not Jindal the Politician." Bobby Jindal has ALWAYS been Bobby Jindal the politician. If he wasn't, why did he surround himself with people like Sellers and Teepell?

Well, Stephen, I know you're going to get hammered by the Jindalites, so I thought I'd say this to counter their assault. You are WAY too kind to the guy. Your statement: "Bobby Jindal must return to be (sic) Bobby Jindal, not Jindal the Politician" shows that you naïvely bought into the Bobby Jindal media juggernaut. The "real" Bobby Jindal is the conniving, self-centered, hypocritical politician, not the "goodness and light and all points in between" image that the press was all too willing to propagate. Admit it, Steve, you bought a bad set o' goods. TW
