Louisiana Hurricanes, Politics, US Financial Bailout And Obama, McCain Debates

Written by: Stephen Sabludowsky

Buzz Right Back----E-Mail a Friend----Print Page

“Bush covers from falling skies, McCain is on the Capitol run.

Jindal urges FEMA for help, Lege is thinking sterilize,

CAT 5 is not around, Louisiana Campaign TV really smells….

Car 54, where are you?”

Incredible.

But more seriously, who’d would have thunk that the public would be debating bailing out US financial institutions and that a Presidential candidate would suspend campaigning and postpone a debate?

Who would have thought that Governor Jindal would be pleading for help and blaming the federal government for its inabilities during times of emergency and rebuild, shades of Governor Blanco.

Who would have dreamed we would be talking about the Great Depression?

Who would have even considered that we are facing a federal US Senate election and other local elections but with hurricanes, football season, and lethargy, so far, it is the campaign that wasn’t?

And, who would have thought that the same legislature who took over David Duke’s seat would even think about a voluntary sterilizing the poor plan?

Then, this is America where our hearts are bigger than our pockets.  This is Louisiana where a very Conservative Republican Governor is dealing with a Republican President completely over his head and a now-Democratic Congress.  This is the US where we always seem to pick Presidents and candidates who do things that later do shocking things that disappoint us.  And, this is Louisiana politics where in many ways, campaigns are run stinking up the joint, using old media with little audience, and tactics not fitting the position the candidates want to fill.

Let’s face it.  This country and this state right now is in a mess.  We’re being told a financial hurricane is coming but we don’t see the red swirl in the gulf.  Yet, we’re being urged to evacuate but there’s nowhere safe to go.

Louisiana needs major infrastructure and people needs that were savaged by the storms, but, those will be delayed by Texas’s Hurricane Ike and “Hurricane Wall Street Bailout”.

Now, where is that Car 54?  It should be in Oxford tonight so we can begin to get open emergency discussion so we can begin to see the future.

Well, anyways, as far as the War in Iraq goes, which is about oil, and stability in the region, as well as a few other abstracts that are about to become manifest and substantiate my statement that the #1 concern is/should be terrorists-nuclear proliferation, back to the death count for Iraq, because when you think about it, most folks aren’t worried about the deaths, they only say that so they sound politically correct… What they are angry about is the money…… Here are some vague statistics where death is concerned……About 1,000 people die annually of electrocution in the United States……About 43,000 people die annually in automobile accidents in the United States….About 15,000 people die annually from accidental falls in the United States….About 1,500 people die annually from accidental drowning in the United States…..About 10,000 people die annually from accidental poisoning in the United States….About 1,000 people die annually from firearms in the United States…..About 3,500 people die annually while riding motorcycles in the United States….About 400 people die annually from alcohol in the United States…..Around 66 people die each year from hornet and wasp stings in the United States……Around 47 people die each year from lightning strikes in the United States….. Around 1 million + abortions are conducted each year in the United States killing around `1+ children that will never get a chance to enjoy a Popsicle on a sunny afternoon… No wonder the parks and playgrounds seem a little empty folks…… while the children that survive look fearfully at the adults that surround them… Is it any wonder? And then there is the economy…. Well, we are surrounded by economy…. It is great!!!! Flip a switch, lights come on, throw a bag in the microwave and 2 minutes later you have popcorn, bored? Turn on the television and watch a soccer game in Brazil…. Hot? turn up the a.c., cold? Turn up the heater…. Want to visit a relative 1,000 miles away? You can get up in the morning and be having lunch at noon with it if you want, just catch a plane….. Broken bones? Go see an orthopedic specialist and get your arm or leg fixed….. Heart attack? Go get some stints. Yeah, things are a little different than they were only 150 years ago…… Back then if you wanted a glass of milk you didn’t just open the ‘fridge’ and poor you some, you went out back and milked the cow… Chicken? Nahhh, no Popeyes back then, if you wanted chicken you walked out back, chased one down, wrung its neck, plucked it, and then gathered wood for the wood stove so you could cook it. As short as 40 years ago, it wasn’t the heart attack that got you, it was the pneumonia that often accompanied it that did you in… Pneumonia is pretty much under control now… A bunch of pissers and moaners is what we have become, with no prudence or practicality……. I was cruising through the housing projects today, saw smiling little welfare recipients faces…. New PT Cruisers, $27,000 GMC quad cabs, some new Acuras, etc., etc., etc parked in the driveways….. Yeah, life in America………. Saw a bunch of those lil’ childruns and their older counterparts running around in $125 tennis shoes and a couple of hundred dollars worth of ‘sports’ fashion… I guess some of those Jerseys with the names of the player who makes 10 million a year bouncing, kicking, hitting, or slapping a ball around probably cost 60 to 100 bucks alone….. Yeah, we have it so bad…. Nah, the economy isn’t the problem, how we work it is…………………………………. Cheers to you folks, you may get some common sense yet if you’re lucky…………. Or maybe at least some appreciation…. For the right things that is…….

Who is the "do nothing worthless group" you refer to? Those who are opposed to "rushing to judgment" to give Paulson and his Wall Street cronies everything they want? That's just what I and many other tax payers want them to do about this "crises", nothing. They say the sky is falling, many of us think they simply want us to believe that our fortunes are tied to theirs; I don't believe it is so. Let the market work, if it collapses then we can become more Socialist - or even Communist. If you don't want to become a Socialist country then... let the market work. It is not beneficial to prop up failure, let failure go the way it is intended to go. These institutions do not need a second chance; they need to be replaced with more responsible lending institutions. Failure may be painful but it does bring about needed change, in sports, school or the market.

And whoever is in the White House controls Congress? How about this do nothing worthless group right now roaming the halls of Congress?

So if "when Clinton was in the White House the hard-line right wing GOP-er's were in control of Congress for most of that time" would you agree that the balanced budgets during the linton years were the result of Republicans in congress? Or is it this way: anything good was the result of Democrats, anything bad was the result of Republicans?

Time to get out of fantasy-land. Let's see...there's been the "Reagan Revolution," the administrations of both Bush the father and Bush the son and then even when Clinton was in the White House the hard-line right wing GOP-er's were in control of Congress for most of that time. Even when the Democrats were in control of Congress Reagan still got his main economic agenda passed. The right wingers have had their shot to prove themselves. Only the most stridently extremist factions could possibly claim otherwise. Unfortunately now the Democrats are going to have to clean up the many messes that the GOP has made. And I think you can feel assured about this: that's going to be rough work and probably means a pretty sobering time ahead.

Which country are we talking about where republicans have been in power for the past 30 years?

The economy is not a dead issue to most Americans. Quite to the contrary it's issue no. 1. The president says so, the experts say so, the bankers say so, most of Congress says so and the majority of the people say so in polls. Only the Herbert Hoovers among us think otherwise. It IS an issue...that's not in question...it's more a matter of what to do about it. Go with more of the same-old same-old policies that brought us here, policies of deregulation of which McCain and his pal Phil Gramm have definitely been a large part...or make some much-needed changes. The free market is a fine mechanism but not problem-free. It took FDR and the New Deal to save this country from itself and save capitalism from itself. The pendulum swung in the direction of the New Deal, etc. for a long, long time, then there was the "Reagan Revolution" with the pendulum going the other way for the past 25-plus years and then now the pendulum is about to start to swing back again whether the Herbert Hoovers want to deal with that reality or not. If it were a white male running against McCain but espousing the same policies that Obama has this election would be an anti-GOP wipeout in the making right now.

Richard, you harp on dead issues…… Since the days of Thomas Jefferson we have had problems with folks over there (Pirates off the shores of Tripoli that interfered with our maritime trade as well as the maritime trade of our ‘friends’…. And what’s the difference if the it is the British Burning down the White House such as they did in 1812, the Japanese attacking Pearl Harbor [Because after Commodore Perry’s opening their eyes to the outside world they figured they wanted it all, including Manchuria, the Philippines, Burma, India, etc. and we weren’t interested in that, or kicking Saddam Hussein’s keaster after he invaded Kuwait and threatened a free market alliance of ours that was and still is of strategic importance?) I have no problem when someone says we went to war over oil, so get over it or pay $8.00 per gallon at the pump like the trashy Europeans do… Weapons of mass destruction? That depends on what your definition of is is……………………… I suppose you forgot about Seddam’s chemical weapons? He used them on his own people in a massive fashion, so is that a weapon of mass destruction? Or how about the scuds, or how about the huge "super cannon," capable of launching satellites into space?. Israeli intelligence feared the supergun. Papers that were found exposed a network of companies across Europe building components for Iraq for a 450-foot-long supercannon with a muzzle diameter of 1,000 milimeters (more than three feet) and a potential range of 1,000 miles. And what about the ‘super-cannon’ that was later found in Iraq that was ‘aimed’ at Israel? It was later dismantled/destroyed… And he wanted to drag Israel into this, what a mess!!!! So whatever… And Osama? Who cares…. He is merely a splinter in a global network of crazies that sometimes come together and kill and destroy, and sometimes they don’t……. Trying to root out Osama is like trying to root out Fanatical suicide bomb making card carrying Muslims…… It is an epidemic….. And it has to be addressed and its hands, arms, legs, feet, and heads cut off…… Nuclear threat is imminent, it is a real danger… We don’t need a Neville Chamberlin, we need a General Patton…… Or Tecumseh Sherman, I don’t care how you digest that fact…… The economy? No worse than when Clinton was in office…. He started the Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac processes as they are now known, [See New York Times ‘99] and yes, the next administration went along with it…. So yes Richard, I agree with you, and I disagree with you…. It is no one parties fault, it is both parties fault, and it is all of our faults………………………… Because we let them do it, while we all sat around flipping real estate, getting government backed school loans we weren’t going to pay back, getting grants to study the effects of woodpecker crap on the forest floor, spending CWPPRA funds on crap that didn’t work, Developing B-2 bombers that never went into production, Blowing our bucks at McDonald’s, buying our kids 150 dollar tennis shoes, listening to rap, idolizing bling, buying girls gone wild dvd’s, driving around in vehicles we couldn’t afford, etc., etc., etc…… So get over it, figure out how to fix it. Desire less, earn more, and what you can’t conserve, well then, contribute……………………………………. It is not up to the Government to fix us, it is up to us to fix ourselves….. And knock that body into place……………….. So get on with it my friend………………….. And get over it………………………. Peace out dude…………………..

Fact: the Republicans have been the party in power now for most of the past 30 years. They've had their chance to accomplish something, to show what they can do. Fact: the majority of Americans hold them and not the Democrats responsible for the current state of the economy, the main issue as of now. Fact: the president got essentially a blank check from the Congress and the country to conduct the effort against the terrorists and take the country to war against Iraq but we after 5-plus years have yet to find the weapons of mass destruction and we have yet to find or kill bin Laden while problems in Afghanistan and Pakistan seem to be coming to a boil. Fact: McCain has had his "maverick" stances on some items but for the overwhelming majority of the time has strongly backed the president's stances and those of the Republicans in general. Obama, such as he is, at least had the wisdom to be able to recognize the Iraq invasion as the foolishness it has turned out to be. McCain has contended that the tactics needed to be different but most definitely strongly backed the overall concept of the invasion and did so from the very beginning. Fact: McCain has long been a leader in the push for deregulation of banking, just as the bankers themselves, the same people largely responsible for creating the current mess, had asked for.

I'll second those motions Sid..... And you ask about plans for coastal restoration.... I guess it is in the private sector... STRONGCONCRETE for instance.... but you are spot on about the politicians, they need to be replaced... But then that would take half the fun out of the Bayou Buzz, because if everything were working, there wouldn't be anything to pizz and moan about on this board now would there????

"Who" would have considered these things? Well since we have self inflicted our wounds why is anybody wondering. We keep electing the same sorry politicians year after year. Do Nothing Breaux, Mr. Druggist Tauzin, Bail Out Baker, and the Queen Miss Landrieu. They go to Washington and make some noise and send a little money and the press goes wild. All the time they don't do a damn thing but play partisan politics and retire multimillionaires. Where is our plan for comprehensive coastal restoration, levee protection, improved infrastructure? To busy making deals with Colorado congressmen to not get the oil shale? As far as suspending a campaign to take care of a serious national problem....it's your freaking job, there shouldn't be any hoopla over it. Illinois residents should be asking for a refund for Mr. B.O.'s salary, he's too busy running for Prez to worry about the little folks back home.

Steve, you ask, or in a dazed fashion state; “Who would have dreamed we would be talking about……………..?” Uhhhhhhh,,,, well, there are quite a few of us actually, in attempts to circumvent such subjects from coming about, but unfortunately we go unheeded… Or ridiculed…….And we continue to warn, and explain, offer practical solutions, and pretty much seemingly waste our time while everyone else wastes everyone else’s time on stupid innuendo……. Yes, Texas needs help, yes, there needs to be some resolution to this latest development where the ‘Stock’ market is concerned, yes, iniquity begets iniquity, and Louisiana is lined up just like every other state with its hand out asking for money….. Mothers throwing babies in garbage dumpsters, drowning their babies and children, abusing their babies, crack epidemics, meth epidemics, people shooting people down in the streets so they can achieve some kind of delusional reputation, predatory lending, sloth and unwillingness to work, false doctrines and false credos, and on and on and on it goes….. Yes Steve, that is Incredible now isn’t it? The fruit is spoiling on the vine….. Why? I suppose because a lot of people just don’t give a damn, that’s why…….. I believe it is true that many people relish misery, misfortune, and destruction, especially when it isn’t their own……. And you ask Why? I believe you answered your own question when you asked “ Who would have dreamed we would be talking about the Great Depression (although I am sure that is not the only subject you are in wonderment about)” Because that is the whole problem right there, most folks just want to talk, and non of them really want to listen, and even if solutions are offered up, they are naught to act upon them….. So there you go Steve, you are a big part of the problem too….. What it all boils on down to, on every level, is what can we contribute, or conserve…. Because the secret to success is to desire less, or earn more……. But I thank you for this wonderful forum, at least we can all ‘talk’ about it… That ALWAYS requires less effort than actually doing something about anything anyways, and everyone seems to always be searching for the easy way out now don’t they?…….. HA-Ha-ha!!!
