Finally, the sleeping giant has awakened. The people of Louisiana have been roused from their decades old slumber. The issue of a legislative pay raise has struck a chord like no other issue in years.
As noted by political watchdog C.B. Forgotston, “The people of the state are more upset about this pay raise than anything I’ve ever witnessed in my lifetime of living in Louisiana.” People in Louisiana are suffering from a poor economy, rising gas prices and a host of other financial worries. While Road Home settlements are still not completed, recovery projects have still not started and the coast remains untouched, it is more than premature for legislators to demand such a raise. In short, the job is not done; in fact it has not even started.
Many legislators are complaining about the costs of traveling to Baton Rouge and the impact of this time consuming job on their other income producing activities. Yet, legislators need to understand that their constituents are also working hard and dealing with high gas prices. It is incredibly galling that legislators are putting their own pocketbook issues before the public's financial problems.
At the present time, Louisiana is ranked at the bottom of most important lists. Just look at the condition of our schools, roads and health care facilities. However, legislators are currently not paid at the bottom when compared to other states. In fact, at the current level, Louisiana legislators are paid fairly well in comparison to other states, ranking 26th among state legislatures. Based on the ranking of Louisiana in most of these critical issues, legislators should be thankful for their current level of pay, not asking for more.
It is also scary that these same legislators are able to stand down a Governor with a rock star image who is on John McCain's short list for vice president. Jindal seems to be allowing the pay raises to go forward so that his agenda will not be hijacked. This is political blackmail in the worst kind of way. Our Governor needs to show leadership. He has one of the strongest chief executive positions in the country. In a showdown with the legislature, the Governor has a much bigger arsenal of political weaponry. If Jindal does not veto this bill, McCain should drop the Louisiana Governor from his “short list.”
As noted by Forgotston in an open letter to Jindal, “If you don’t side with us on this issue, all of the reforms that you are pushing (and have passed) will be meaningless.” As usual, Forgotston is quite right. All of the legislative accomplishments from tax cuts to ethics reforms will be lost on the public if this pay raise becomes law. People will remember one thing from this session and it will be the pay raise. Good legislators will lose their jobs in the next election as this issue has angered too many people and the voters will not forget this outrage.
One very beneficial impact of this debate is that, finally, voters are paying attention and inundating the Governor's office, legislative offices and media outlets with their denunciations of this monstrosity. It is the type of passion that I have been waiting to see all of my political life. It took the pay raise issue to raise the ire of the public, but at least it woke up the drowsy voters. Hopefully, this debate will mark a new episode in Louisiana politics, one in which voters take a more active role and demand that legislators do the bidding of their constituents and not themselves.
Legislators need to understand that they are public servants and voters are the boss. We are the ones that employ these politicians and those who vote for this pay raise can very well be fired at the next election. To all of the competent and skilled legislators who are considering a vote in favor of this bill, think again. It is the equivalent of a political death sentence.
For Governor Jindal, it is time to show courage, leadership and get back engaged in what is happening here in Louisiana. It is time to stop the grand political and media tour around the country and stop campaigning for the vice presidential nomination and start paying attention to job #1.
People are now watching and demanding that our public servants follow the will of the ones in charge, not the politicians, but the people of Louisiana. Finally the roles are reversed and let's hope it stays this way.
Bobby Jindal is looking for a career in National Politics. Everyone contact CNN, FOX NEWS, NBC, CBS, ABC. Anyone and everyone you can think of in the National News Media. You Tube has some footage that shows just what the character of the people we are dealing with are. Put a national spotlight on the Govenor and this whole process and lets see how many of them want to smile and beat each other on the back for the camera. Obviously outrage from the citizens is not enough Tucker, Duplessis need to be asked hard questions and faces plastered all over the media of the entire nation. Great split shot the still devastated areas of our state and Tucker and Duplessis with handfuls of money! How do we expect to ask the federal government for more funding to rebuild our state now! Fine article Jeff... but.... forces working against voters taking "a more active role" to get legislators to do "the bidding of their constituents and not themselves."... may well be too many to be overcome. First off many people do not pay any taxes. While not being uncaring about those less fortunate than myself I also realize that many of these "tax free citizens" simply DO NOT CARE about how much the government wastes, as long as they get their cut of government expenditures in the form of free housing and/or a check. Why should they? They don't pay into the system. Government OWNS these voters. Also many look to government for their perceived needs (healthcare, secure retirement, etc); they do not care if government officials take a bit of this money culled from productive citizens' funds; government owns these voters as well. With our welfare policies creating ever more poor (as most fatherless children are) since LBJ's Great Society reforms and ineffective checks on illegal immigration, the voter ranks of those who only collect and pay "nada" into the system only gets larger and larger. Government owns these citizens as well. Big Government, you may as well learn to love it. Written by kpf

"a government big enough to give you everything you want is also big enough to take away everything you have" - how simplistic..... also how very true. Most of the "outrage" is not that government has overstepped its constitutional bounds but rather what they do to with the money they steal from the citizens. Oh, but it’s okay, all of these problems cropped up with W's "stolen" 2000 election. Don't worry "change we can believe in" is coming to the rescue. Then none of these problems will exist; gas prices will plummet. High gas prices having nothing to do with 1) supply and demand (China, India) or 2) the U.S. failing to build refineries, nuke power plants or produce from offshore Florida, Alaska, etc – nope! – it’s all dat dubya fella’s fault – that’s all gonna be fixed soon. Anger about the pay raise has led to talk of outrage and disappointment in Louisiana, and we are saying the anger is stirred by the higher cost of living, especially gas, leading us all to lowered expectations, while the legislators vote themselves higher expectations. Now,I'm also very glad to see 'the sleeping giant' finally wake up. However, my take on this is the same as ever, but I repeat it because it has the misfortune of being true. The present administration of the United States has created a disastrous economic and political climate for us, spending over half our national budget on the military in order to finance wars of aggression. To do this, the administration also takes away our best and brightest by persuading them to put on a uniform, supposedly to defend the country but actually to defend the corporations. So they are not here to create the economic and cultural life of Louisiana, as they were not here to help during the storms and flood. The Republican Party has supported this administration, yet we in Louisiana have been bamboozled by the propaganda of the Louisiana Committee for a Republican Majority, financed by the enormous wealth of Bollinger, Cannizzaro, the Vitters, and a 'foreigner', Bob Perry, from Houston. We have been bamboozled into believing that a Republican, Bobby Jindal, would somehow wave his magic ethical wand over everybody but himself and turn the state around. It isn't happening. If the sleeping giant of Louisiana would REALLY wake up and take charge of its own affairs, refusing to follow the devastating war directives of this federal administration, there would be a change that matters and benefits us all. Oh, the blood of my Louisiana people once flowed red with courage in their veins; surely it will show vitality again once more!!! Written by Robert Desmarais Sullivan

Gov. Jindal is acting like a wimp. His strategy of letting the legislators police themselves makes as much sense letting the criminals in New Orleans police themselves. Gov. Jindal is a big disappointment. I was told that he would be just as bad as the others once he got elected. Look at his legal adviser being sued by the Indian tribe he screwed. And, how about the reappointment of the LA. National Guard Colonel everyone railed against; and trying to limit ethics reform in the governor's office. Kathleen Blanco was an obvious idiot, and we all thought that Jindal, being so smart, would be a breath of fresh air. The legislature has as much contaminates as the dirty air we breathe in New Orleans. Someone needs to step up and do some sterilizing. I'll bet if Senator John Hainkel were still with us you would not be seeing any shenanigans like this.
