An article by the New American Media is claiming that Bobby Jindal is still being considered the running mate for John McCain. The subtitle of the article calls Jindal, Obama’s Asian problem. On Tuesday, Jindal made it clear that his heart belongs to Louisiana. But, what if McCain is facing Obama, needs youth and race or ethnicity on the ticket and says “Bobby, I need you”.No doubt, this game of Veep watch will be played out over the next few months. While Jindal clearly made it known that his intentions are to be Governor and his focus is on his legislative agenda, perhaps he should say “absolutely not” to McCain now.Otherwise, the pressure might build to go young and go ethnicity and if Louisiana needs anything at all, it’s certainty.
1st Congressional District
The Republican Parish Executive Committee of St. Tammany has decided to issue no endorsement in the April 5 runoff for the GOP nomination to replace Gov. Bobby Jindal in Congress.
The RPEC heard from the four contenders in the GOP Primary in January, and met last night to discuss the remaining two candidates, Rep. Tim Burns and Sen. Steve Scalise.
The majority of RPEC members believe that both candidates are qualified for the position and, in keeping with its mission to support qualified Republican candidates, chose not to entertain motions to endorse either candidate.
“We take our responsibility very seriously when it comes to issuing endorsements,” said RPEC Chair Pam Egan. “Our three primary missions are voter registration, voter education, and voter mobilization and, in this case, the best leadership we can offer Republican voters is to show our support for both candidates.
“Sen. Scalise and Rep. Burns are both qualified to represent the 1st Congressional District in Washington, and we find that it would be unnecessarily divisive for us to endorse either gentleman,” Egan said. “As Louisiana adapts to closed primaries for federal offices and in the midst of what has already become a divisive campaign, we choose to remain collectively neutral while each of us supports the candidate of his choice.
“No matter which of these candidates you support, the RPEC wholeheartedly encourages volunteerism, financial support and – most importantly – voter participation.”
Early voting for this election is going on now. Election Day is Saturday, April 5.
Meanwhile, according to Democratic Gilda Reed in a press release, “The National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund has given its highest rating to Gilda Reed, candidate for the 1st Congressional District. Reed’s “A” rating was based on her answers to the NRA’s federal candidate questionnaire.
“I believe in the right of Americans to own firearms,” said Reed, “and am proud to receive this rating from the NRA.” Reed is a third-generation millitary family, and has a son on active duty.
Since the Democratic party primary where Reed garnered 70 percent of the vote, she also earned the endorsement of the Louisiana Federation of Teachers. The two top vote-getters on the Republican side
were Tim Burns and Steve Scalise, about whom the Times-Picayune wrote, “...politicians are always looking for ways to stay on the public payroll. But Tim Burns, Steve Scalise and John Young have taken seathopping to a new level. ” (Jan. 14, 2008) Reed has pledged to never run for a different office, saying that the lack of stability in the seat has put the
district at a disadvantage in obtaining help at the national level. The district, still recovering from HurricaneKatrina, will have had four congressmen within a nine-year period.
Mayor Holden
Checks were recently presented by Mayor Kip Holden to the first four small business recipients of loans from the newly-created Baton Rouge Small Business Loan Fund, which is managed by Seedco Financial. Mayor Holden issued a $2 million dollar challenge to the Baton Rouge business community to help finance an additional 100 small business loans over the next three years.
The new Baton Rouge Loan Fund has $2.5 million in start-up funding, but needs $2 million in additional capital to meet the needs of the Baton Rouge small business community, according to Seedco Financial Policy Board Chair Cheri Morial Ausberry, representing Capital One. The Fund provides below-market-rate loans from $5,000 up to $150,000 to entrepreneurs who have been unable to obtain start-up or operational financing through conventional sources. In addition to Seedco Financial and the City of Baton Rouge, initial contributors to the Fund were Capital One Bank, Liberty Bank, La Capitol Federal Credit Union, Neighbors Federal Credit Union, Omni Bank, Regions Bank, and Whitney Bank and Entergy.
