Louisiana Politics: Landrieu, Kennedy, Jindal and Bush

 Fact or fiction?

One of the key objectives of any political columnist is to look between the lines of spin, get the facts right, and sometimes advocate for a position.  As a publisher and as a columnist, as many readers know, I have not supported any candidate unlike other publications.  That is far from the case in Louisiana where many written publications support candidates in their writings.

I do not have to be fair, but I try to be.  Look around the Internet and you will see many web sites, email newsletters and even newspaper publications that hardly show anything but bias.  One publisher even acted as a gubernatorial campaign treasurer and then transition team head.  Now, that is real objectivity in action, right?

So, early this week, I was a little surprised when I received a press release from the John Kennedy campaign saying he wanted to reiterate his position that he wants televised debates in every Louisiana Congressional District.

Instead of his campaign contacting Mary Landrieu and working out dates to achieve exactly what he wanted—televised debates covering every congressional district in Louisiana , he sent a letter to Mary Landrieu and then released it concurrently to the media that suggested that Landrieu was not being cooperative in debating.  Yesterday, he said he was ready to debate next week.

Not only did Kennedy not consult with the Landrieu campaign beforehand, but, it had not secured any dates from television networks for the so-called debates.

This, in my view was pure political showmanship and spin.

The only attempt to promote debates along the line of what Kennedy wanted was a statement by him in a newspaper a month ago.  So, instead of contacting the Landrieu campaign, calling a meeting, sitting down with television networks, Kennedy sent out a press release and simultaneously whined about Landrieu not responding to his call for debates.  In my books, this is unfair political theater and borders on the ficticious.

To his credit, urging debates is a good thing for it promotes democracy.

Today, the Kennedy campaign is promoting a “debate watch clock”.  I must ask, again:  Where was this clock when Governor Jindal was running for office last year?   Why was John Kennedy silent as a lamb on the issue of gubernatorial debates?

Why was the GOP silent last year on the issue of Gubernatorial debates but yesterday send out an emailer listing as Landrieu’s “worst week” an article suggesting that she was evading debates.  The Louisiana GOP had ample opportunity to speak out to promote debates during the gubernatorial year but was totally mute because their objective was to win, not to do what was right.

As I mentioned, I believe that US Senator Landrieu should debate as frequently as possible.  I fully understand she is attempting to build on her Congressional coalition to expanding the “Gang of 10” and fix the energy problem, but, Louisiana wants to hear her go head to head with John Kennedy.

And Kennedy should not insult the people of Louisiana to think that the only debates should be on television in the Congressional Districts.   Instead of putting up a clock indicating that Landrieu is evading debates, he should do what he says he wants and debate.  Which is understandable why he was unwilling to discuss the issues with Senator Landrieu this week.  According to the Landrieu campaign,  in pertinent parts “Meanwhile, Senator Landrieu's opponent and his partisan allies are relentless in trying to distort her record.  Louisianians deserve a fair campaign about the candidates' records and visions for the future. Senator Landrieu is ready to discuss her winning battles on behalf of our state, which is why she will attend the Louisiana Municipal Association Annual Convention this weekend. John Kennedy had the opportunity to share a stage with Senator Landrieu and discuss the issues facing Louisiana's voters with mayors from across the state, but he decided instead to attend a Hot Air Balloon Festival in Baton Rouge.”

So, both candidates, let’s start the debates, not just on television and not just in October, and not in the media using press releases, but now in public on the side of the roads and in the air (as in television and media airwaves, not balloons).

Landrieu’s Bush Statement

I must admit that when I read Mary Landrieu’s statement yesterday thanking President Bush for using his power under the WRDA Act to extend the Louisiana repayments from 3 to 30 years, she did not use the best of political etiquette.  In thanking President Bush for removing a heavy burden, she said,“I of course would have preferred that the President had taken this step sooner, and worked with our delegation rather than against us on the Supplemental bill, but am nonetheless grateful for this decision.”.

I fully understand Landrieu’s frustration concerning President Bush and this recovery.  Many times I have written that Bush has been extremely slow to do what is right.  Even Governor Jindal a few weeks ago said he had spoken to the administration about the levee construction repayment and did not understand why there was no action.  But, Jindal is not running for US Senate this year, nor am I.  Landrieu needs to hone in her sarcasm and animus if she wants to win in Louisiana.  Without doubt, Landrieu was extremely instrumental in helping with this legislation and with the recovery, in general.  But, being harsh will not help her at all with the swing voters whom she needs to win what now appears to be a close election.

Jindal

I would not be able to close this column without thanking President Bush for using his powers to extending Louisiana’s repayment and to thank Governor Bobby Jindal for standing for Louisiana and subtlety confronting the President on the levee construction issue.  After doing so a few Fridays ago, I said Jindal had hit a homerun for his knowledge and passion on this issue.  After yesterday’s announcement that President Bush would extend the repayment, I would call his actions and those of many a “grand slam”.    Jindal, Landrieu, and all of the Louisiana delegation went to bat to apply pressure and made the argument which will help Louisiana enormously.  Governor Jindal, President Bush and the Louisiana delegation should be thanked, and in my small way, I am doing it here—at least for me.

Dear unknown Writer, You are correct in your statement about Miss Mary being clueless to the unfolding turmoil in the former USSR, as are alot of our wonderful politicians who only care about personal wealth, power and getting re-elected. Putin's Russia has been lurking about in the shadows for quite a while. Everything they have done and will do is cold and calculated. It scares the willeys out of me to think of our present senator and her involvement in foreign affairs. This same woman votes with her party when they tell her to, she offers amendments to pull all the troops out of Iraq and send them all to Afganistan, she votes to give ss benefits to illegal aliens(undocumented workers?)she lies and lies and lies. But there is an election in the coming months and despite what is happening in Georgia, et al mary needs to debate so we can see her try to give intelligent answers to intelligent questions. So please Steve, please put a topic up for discussion concerning this latest conflict in the former USSR and how it relates to us poor old dumb country folks down here in Louisiana.

When budget concerns in Congress are raised over the funding for U.S. enforced neutralizing policies in Georgia via the U.S. military are contemplated (If and when this event occurs, I myself think that the conflict is going to escalate in Azerbaijan and flow through to Armenia……. Georgia, devoid of naturally occurring resources from a conquest point of view does however possess the key where routes through the Balkans can be concerned for establishment of a front in Armenia which of course is the back door to Iraq/Iran both of which were heavily funded by the Soviets several decades ago….. So in other words, the new NATO DMZ, much like East/West Berlin – Germany ‘Deutschland’… Sadly enough, Georgia is a ‘U.S.’ interest, and its neighbor Azerbaijan is a key position for the Caspian Sea which is a logistical alternative to the Balkans, and Azerbaijan also has a very poor record in Human trafficking i.e. ‘slaves’ that is currently an ongoing industry and for spin purposes if the United States feels like pursuing can be one of the issues aside from the pipeline that travels through Georgia for confrontation… The payoff where Azerbaijan is concerned? 750,000 + barrels of oil per day………. So in other words, Iraq will be occupied for an additional 2 or 3 decades easily, it is another key interest…….. Iran – nukes? Russia connection – war on terror clause….. It is U.S. policy……. And now for the rest Sidley……..) or additional funding for Louisiana is considered over the needs of say, ehhhh, let's mention Albany New York (You know, the heavy flooding that happened there yesterday?) for instance start to realize that yes, these things have a direct bearing on Kennedy/Landrieu..... That is if you can purge some of the Boudian and crackers from between your ears and realize that when Congressional representatives are considered, they are part of a national 'thing' and summarily a 'global' thing and when it comes on down to it, folks such as Pelosi, Landrieu, Obama, etc., etc., etc. just don't seem to have the taste 'folks don't get tired of', or at least sound thinking and practical folks...... As the world moves, so to does Louisiana need to contemplate its political policies and funding applications because that is all Congress is from a ‘State’ standpoint is a mouthpiece to secure funds……….. So there Sidley, is a partial consideration and an answer to your ignorant spew............ Hope you got as little of it as possible on your chin....... Because when it comes on down to it, Landrieu is no more qualified, or educated on global affairs than the typical "I'll bet you $20 I know where U got Ur shoes at" hustler on Bourbon Street on a typical Friday night......... Yes, in the background things like Azerbaijan give her moment to pause and grasp the full depth and scope if her inadequacy....

Oh please forgive me oh wise and enlightened one. I anxiously await your next diatribe and I will try my best to gleam the pertinent facts from the post. I can now see how Azerbaijan has caused Mary Landrieu to run from debating Kennedy! Thank you.

Blow it out your shorts sid, these are the issues... Follow them carefully, you clueless hack....... Like I posted; Azerba, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia blank on google maps..... I offered less than optimal opinion so that voyuers such as yourself could read between the lines...... O.K... Situation today??? Azerbaijan... Surprise there geuius, one of the 'blanked out tangents'..... Tomorrow? I know, and you don't, but let me clue you in sunshine..... Iraq? We are not leaving.... It is the new DMZ of NATO....... Russia is at the back door.... Escalation? Well Sidley, U betcha!!!!!! I have a suspicion about you Sidley, you are becoming more and more prominent.... You are perhaps one of those monitor lizards.............. But at an insidious inside level.... Thou dost complain to much........ I must admit, I am at somewhat of a disadvantage, you know me, but I have no direct knowledge of who you are..... But you do like to be one heck of a tryalouge mouthpiece..... Perhaps I am among the ranks of the only honest people on this bored,,, As the politics of the world goes, so to are the direct effects on Louisiana, as well as the rest of the United States.... Time to buckle your seatbelts folks, it is going to be an interesting ride.....

US, Europe scramble to stop Georgia-Russia war * * * * Sat Aug 9, 7:04 AM ET * * * * WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States and European Union are leading a diplomatic push to prevent all-out war between Georgia and Russia, calling for a ceasefire as Russian tanks rolled into a rebel Georgian province. …….. Envoys from the US, EU and Organization of Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) were being deployed to Georgia to seek an end to the fighting in Russian-backed South Ossetia, a breakaway region of Western-backed Georgia. * * * * * Azerba, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia blank on google maps. Surrounding Iran, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Russia visible,,,,, Wonder wuts up wit dat????? Shades of NATO, France just got sort of lovey dovey with China a few days ago........ Turkey rejects China affairs,,, Iran/North Korea/China pacts................ Ahhh,, the Bear and the Dragon...... All I have to say folks is we better get our collective heads out of our collective asses and get our politicians and priorities right...................... Turkey is now caught in a pincher position between Russia and Iran.................... Azerbaijan may very well be the specific target............ It does have some rather noteable energy resources that are as of yet fairly undeveloped........ Perhaps the news/announcement about our Haynesville shale is a timely event.. As is the announcement of improvements to Barksdale AFB..... And all this while the 'olympics' are being conducted... This ought to be interesting to watch........

Where was Kennedy on the Legislative Payraise? For someone who is good at getting attention, Kennedy was strangely quiet on that issue. The tv stations can set up debates without Kennedy's help. Having a debate in every district is just a gimmick by Kennedy. The 1st, 2nd and part of the 3rd district are in the New Orleans market while Lafayette and Lake Charles are both in the 7th district.

How do you know that Kennedy's group has not been in contact with the landrieu camp concerning debates? maybe going public is the only way to pressure her into debating. She is not a good debator and never has been. And why bring up Jindal's reluctance to debate and blame Kennedy for not speaking out about it? What does that have to do with this election? If Kennedy had been running I would have expected him to voice his opinion. Steve-o, do they let you ride shotgun on the Landrieu Express?

Good point. If we didn't need to have wide open debating last year then it's hard to see how all of a sudden things have changed such that we need it this year. Oh wait...the Republican is the underdog now. Good reason.

Stephen, while you were riding on the Landrieu bandwagon, you forgot to mention that she casted the winning vote in a vote-tied Senate against an important energy bill. She has voted right in the past on some partisan issues, but I think in the long run that Kennedy is the right man for the job.

All elections are decided by a few percentage points and as such every elected official inherits vocal critics ready to pounce on any thing they don't agree with.Bobby Jindal is no exception ,but kudos to him for persistance in using his considerable skills to get Louisiana much needed time reprieve for payment.
