If the election were today, David Vitter certainly would prevail in his re-election as the Louisiana US Senator. Not that he warrants that distinction in my view.He has grossly embarrassed the State of Louisiana, did very little in helping this state to recover from Katrina and Rita.He also violated his trust to the people of this state by making effort to take the 5th Amendment Washington DC Madam case. The idea that a US Senator who writes criminal laws would not testify in a criminal trial is simply repugnant to the very fiber of public trust.
However, the Republicans have decided to hold their collective noses and go with the person they believe can hold that seat.He might have been un-chaired except he found a new running mate in Barack Obama.
Since Obama took office, Vitter has been one of the President’s major antagonists.Being an antagonist is one of the things that Senator Vitter does best since we know exactly what he is against, but, rarely know what he stands for or who he really is.Although he said he told us about his past, almost anyone listening knows he is not telling the truth.
Still, despite his ugly warts, he is the odds-on favorite to be the next US Senator in a ultra-conservative state Louisiana. This is the same state that put David Duke on the map and if they can be stupid enough to vote for the Grand Wizard, they will vote for the Grand Lizzard, in Vitter.
Vitter is favored to win because Obama won and because his opponent Charlie Melancon cannot find his way to the hearts and minds of the voters.
To his credit, Vitter has faced a friendly audience denouncing Obama-style health care reform. Not that it took much courage for Vitter to stand up in front of a drooling audience and initially screen questions and then later just say “I agree” to voters who are willing to believe every conspiracy theory they can grab if it involves the current President. It would have really taken guts to stand up in Court and tell the truth or stand up to the people of Louisiana and field questions from the media who disputes his claims that he only engaged in a horrible sin once.
Nonetheless, the Republican party wants a winner despite the fact that Vitter’s victory violates the major tenet of “family values”, that is valuing your own family. The GOP is willing to sell their souls as long as it means bringing down those “devils” Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid.
Yet, to the extent that David Vitter had a great August due to the health care hysteria, Charlie Melancon had a horrible month despite using the Internet to announce his candidacy.
Melancon did not face a crowd of cheering possible voters when he made that announcement.Nor did he face a hostile crowd to field questions about health care as did Mary Landrieu and to some extent Congressman Cao of New Orleans.
The revelations that he took a trip with his wife on the tax payer dime to Way Under was over the top.The fact that he recently was seen in public at Martha’s Vinyard-- a perceived wealthy democrat and lobbyist retreat is not the message a candidate wants to build up steam.
Also, Vitter and the Louisiana Republican Party and conservative blogs are eating Melancon’s lunch right now.Vitter just sent out an email with a cartoon video that showed a wobbly Melancon side to side by a wobbly Obama is priceless.Meanwhile, the Democratic Party sits on the sidelines as does its candidate.
If Melancon is playing the rope a dope, the dope is him. There are a lot of things that Vitter is not, but, one thing he is--a political survivor and a tough campaigner. He might not have done much to help Louisiana survive from the storm, but, he has kept his own political tail.If Melancon keeps playing “out of sight”, he will be “out of mind” and out of office.
It is true that Melancon is getting his team together. But, unless he starts connecting with the voters with public appearances debunking that he is a “liberal” and proving he is a blue-dog moderate, this race is in the can.
Current Governor Jindal took off from his Congressional duties after he won his second campaign as Congressman and cast a handful of votes during the entire period. He also spent a tremendous amount of time travelling throughout Louisiana actually campaigning for Governor while he was campaigning for Congress.
Melancon must say goodbye to his Congressional chores and start meeting the Boudreaux’s in this state. He failed to do it in August of 2009 when his courage was on the line.At some time, he is going to have to face the public and it better not be in a canned Internet or TV spot or else he is toast as a candidate for US Senate.
New Orleans Election
We are soon to hear the fate of Arnie Fielkow who has promised us that he would make up his mind about his future after Labor day.He has been laboring over this issue now for weeks. There is no doubt that John Georges is running and can fund his own campaign.Georges did well in New Orleans against Jindal.Fielkow has the name appeal and has acted like a candidate for something other than New Orleans City Councilman.I believe that Fielkow wants to be mayor. The key question is whether there is enough money on the street to edge out Georges in a runoff against the leading African American candidate.Right now, everybody’s campaign is on hold until the world knows what Arnie is going to do.Should he enter the Mayoral ring after the Jerry Lewis telethon, he is going to have to make many calls for bucks in order to buck the man who can write his own campaign check.Fielkow has overcome major obstacles before. He just needs to tell us if he is ready for this one.
Fielkow has exposed himself to the "reluctant warrior" attack that Rob Couhig used against Mitch Landrieu in the last Mayor's Race. Couhig can't endorse Nagin this time but he could endorse Murray or Badon. Written by David Quidd

This whole Fielkow mess is just that...a mess. If at this stage he's not sure he wants the job, that says alot about him right there, about the kind of job he'd do. Nobody put a gun to his head about when he'd announce. If his heart was in it he'd have announced instead of being so wishywashy. We need someone to lead us out of this mess, and this news does not inspire trust that he is that person. Written by nuorlins

Hey people both these guys have brought home the bacon for Louisiana! In my minds eye Bacon equals taxes. Kinda leaves me with a sour taste in my mouth. Look for the third party candidate he lives where you live, not in DC. Written by Tony G

The rest of America is "stupid" in their own way. Praising Social Security and Medicare while ignoring the government's own forecasts of these programs unfunded liabilities, allowing our government to provide foreign countries, banks and businesses with hundreds of billions of our dollars (or money created by the Fed which devalues our own savings and fixed incomes) and - at the same time - freezing Social Security payments for cost-of-living increases for 5 years. All the while we station troops overseas (on the backs of American taxpayers) which helps these countries spend their tax dollars on social safety nets "we can't afford" in our country - oh yeah, we'll offer up a few thousand or so of our young people's lives to keep the multinational bankers and industrialists profits safe overseas as needed and required. Ignorance truly is bliss. Written by kpf

At least Mr. Sabludowsky is being even handed. He might not like Vitter (what is there to like about him anyway?), but it absolutely criticized Melancon. If he was so biased, why would he criticize Melancon? If you want bias, just check out those blogs on te Internet. Bayoubuzz is the most fair web site that I visit. It puts up both sides of the issue, let's us comment and has writers for all sides. I think that Vitter has some explainng to do regarding his past since he has told us that he has told us everything. Gee, wasn't that Vitter that hit that pole trying to get away from reporters? Didn't he hide from reporters while in the capitol? And Melancon also has some explaining to do. Where was he this month? I think that is the point of this column. As far as "Lizzard", when the GOP chairman stops saying the Obama administration is trying to kill Veterans, then, maybe those who are saying no name calling can complain. Let me think, I have heard "Hitler, Communist, Socialist, Killer, Marxist, government-controlled". If those are not names, what are? As far as "stupid", I think the voters in Louisiana have been stupid. The red-necks who voted for Duke finally accepted Jindal once he started praying with them. Louisiana is out of touch with the rest of America. As far as Melancon, he as Mr. Sabludowsky has said is going to have to eplain his voting record or he will lose. Or, should I refer Melancon as "Charlie Boy", the name calling from the GOP. Yep, I agree with this column and this web site. I wish more web sites would be as fair and as right. Written by Yep

Vitter is also for "cheaper" prescription drugs. I am against government interference with pharmaceutical innovation. So I realize Vitter is "less than ideal" on his "principles" - but before I vote for anyone else I would expect them to be no worse than Vitter is on fiscal issues. As far as "pork" spending, the Devil is in the details on just what is and isn't "pork." Written by kpf

Except David Vitter is for big government. In 2008, he was number 5 in the Senate in pork barrel spending. He also voted for the largest farm welfare bill in American history. David Vitter's only principle is getting himself re-elected. Written by come on

Did Feminists like Bill Clinton's behavior towards women? Probably not. Were lawyers who supported Bill Clinton proud of his lying under oath? I hope not. Yet both of these groups continued to support him. Not for the reasons (excuses) given; rather they supported him because he represented their issues more so than anyone from the opposition party. So will those of us who think big government - no - big government and record deficits need to be opposed possibly vote for David Vitter? We just may. As far as that making us "stupid" .... that is not worthy of comment. Written by kpf

I am from Melancon's home town. I contacted his office twice after Katrina trying to get information on how to help family members. I did not ever get a response. Guess he was too busy making sure that as many people as he could reach knew that Katrina was all Bush's fault. I contacted Vitter's office and his staff gathered all the information (names, phone numbers, types of documents, etc) I would need and said that if I did not get the assistance I needed from those appropriate departments to get back to them. It all worked. The same with Gustav. Vitter's office was most helpful. Effective staff comes directly from instructions from the boss. For those who say that Vitter is not a successful and effective legislator for Louisiana, they are very mistaken and have not researched his voting record. How many bills have Melancon sponsored. Don't count the ones congratulating the LSU Tigers for National Championships. I am sure that Pelosi is busy planning to make sure he gets a little better record before the election. At the risk of stating the obvious Stephen we know you do not like Vitter but do you really think that Melancon would be a better legislator and representative for Louisiana in the Senate? Melancon could not stand up to his constituents on Healthcare but hid behind the "no invitation" or "busy schedule" excuse/reason. Melancon is not conservative except during election time. He voted for Pelosi as speaker and votes her agenda 93% of the time. This Blue Dog tag he continues to cling to is smoke and mirrors. He said he was against a bill and voted against it in committee. Then Waxman asked him to change his vote to get the bill to the floor. He did and the Bill went to the floor and passed despite his NO vote. So was he against the bill or only giving lip service to his objections. Worse could it be that he did not know that the way to stop a bill is to kill it in committee since the other side does not have enough votes to stop it on the floor. Whether it is the oil industry, cap & tax, card check (does Charlie Boy know he represents a Right to Work state), immigration, healthcare, the death tax etc. Melancon's party is on the wrong side of the issue for Louisianans. Thank you poster for agreeing that before we see the whole list in the black books of the madames, we can only assume that Vitter's success against the Liberal/Progressives was the main motive for releasing ONLY his name. That's an apropos nickname the erstwhile Davy the law-breaking whoremonger, Sen. Vitter---fits him like a tee----the "Grand Lizard". As a conservative, if the republicans renominate Vitter they deserve to lose that seat in what should be a landslide anti-Obama year. Please Gen. Honore, as Fontella Bass sang in the 60's, "Rescue Me(Us)" from being disgraced and dishonored in front of the entire nation---come on home Russell, we need you now more than ever. Written by Randall

If you are expecting Steve to present only the facts without his obviously biased commentary you are at the wrong place.
Pay attention class:
I'm going to say this again and I'll continue to say it until those who attack David Vitter see the light.
There is no way that David was the only legislator or high government official who was involved with the D.C. Madam or the house on Canal Street. He was the only one outed by Larry Flynt as a political attack. So until you can show me the names of EVERYONE who was involved I will continue to defend David. If the list becomes public I'll be there with you to condemn David and everyone else in the book or books.
Don't forget those judges who surely were involved. And maybe we should include web site editors???

Geez, so much for unbiased media coverage. Is this a news aggregator or a personal oped site? Could you perhaps refrain from calling anyone a "lizzard" and stick to their words and deeds please? It's still early yet in the race for Senate. Are you just a wee bit antsy to see mud fly so you started throwing some yourself?
And what would you have Vitter do? Abandon his Congressional responsibilities for which he was elected to do so you can feel like he is paying attention to you? If you and anyone else in this state honestly think a sitting elected official should abandon their official duties so they can come home and "campaign" to you, then ya'll deserve every crappy government policy, program, tax, fee, and regulation you get. Vitter wasn't elected to the office of "candidate" he was chosen to be our Senator. I'd prefer he and the rest of our elected officials waited until next fall's recess to start campaigning and in the meantime did the job they were elected and are paid to do - represent the State and the People.
If your opinion is indicative of how voters in this state think, we are beyond hope and help. Written by Adrien Monteleone
