Louisiana Rally: People Power For Gov. Jindal Veto

Written by: Stephen Sabludowsky

Buzz Right Back----E-Mail a Friend----Print Page

Pay Raise Gate has gone from the ridiculous to the sublime.

Yesterday’s news conference in New Orleans underscored more than anytime else how important it is for there to be transparency in Government and in the Administration.

Specific questions were asked by reporters and Governor Jindal ignored the questions, went into his three-part speech about how the legislature was going down the wrong track, that there was still time for them to turn from the astray, that he is strongly against the pay raises and “yada, yada, yada”.

He repeated the answer to questions such as whether he was being threatened.

He refused to tell me details about his so-called pledge.

So, this once hopeful shiny city on the hill of transparency and honesty has lost its sheen and has turned pitched dark.

Bobby Jindal who once epitomized character in government has become a Louisiana character.

It is a tremendous pity because we all had such high hopes for him and for the new legislature.

He says if he were to veto the legislation his reforms would be undermined yet he won’t “call out” or name those who have made such a threat.  He remains mute and he must think we are dumb for buying into his rhetoric without providing us any facts to support his claim.

So, as the clock ticks to the end of the legislative session, as we see a Governor become significantly weaker because he won’t use his inherent strength of line item vetoes and manning the soap box and naming names and details of legislative threats, we are left with one burning question—why won’t Bobby Jindal veto this legislation that has gripped the emotions of hundreds of thousands of Louisiana citizens over the past week?  What is the real reason that he made that pledge which undermined his campaign pledge and has made him look so foolish in the process?

Unfortunately, because he has really gone mute, he has left us to engage in rank speculation regarding his real motives.

For instance, one person told me recently that the legislature was upset that Jindal’s own staff was receiving such high pay and they threatened to deny the salaries of Stephen Moret the new LED head who could be making more money than any public official in the South.  This person believes that was the pressure point that made Jindal cave.

Since Governor Jindal refused to answer the specific question I posed to him about his pledge to the legislators, that theory makes as much sense as any other.  Frankly, we just don’t know his real reasons for sitting on his veto pen and won’t know until someone squeals.

Last Friday, Bayoubuzz columnist Jeff Crouere penned a editorial saying Let The Revolution Begin.  That column was written before the secretive talks, and the House without any debate.  That was written before the Senate concurred without their public debate.

Based upon statements from House Speaker, Jim Tucker, changing the course on the legislative vote is not going to happen prior to the end of the session.  So, if that is the case, there would be no other way for Louisiana to control its own destiny but to put pressure on Bobby Jindal to veto the legislation.

He needs to know that his agenda is in jeopardy not by the legislators but because the people want more from their elected officials and demand openness from his own administration.  This is our state, not his.  This is our state, not the legislators’.  They serve us.  We do not serve them.

He has promised that he would not veto the legislation but will let it become law.  Thus, whether that is the case or not, he should hear directly from the people.  They all need to know loud and clear that our memories are long and we demand accountability.

I realize that there are important issues facing the state such as poor roads, poor education, few good jobs and we want to help Governor Jindal transform this state as he promised.  However, the entire “Pay Raise Gate” has come down to the Governor’s and the legislature’s own credibility of lack thereof.

Governor Jindal must veto the Pay Raise and challenge the legislature to “Make His Day” with a veto override.

In turn, Louisiana must engage in citizen action, so let the revolution begin, and let our collective voices be heard.

Therefore, Bayoubuzz will initiate a peaceful rally on the Capitol steps prior to the day the bill becomes law.  It is the democratic way to let the people know that we mean business and we want this legislation vetoed.  The Governor needs to see live bodies demanding change, not simply emails and phone calls.  We will need the help of organizations, of individuals and yes, you--who feel left out in the cold by our Governor and by the legislature.  It is time for Louisiana to take our state back from the power brokers seeking power for their own person gain while the people go broke.  If you want to help in a large or small way, contact me and let us begin to become Citizen Can.  As Jeff Crouere has said, it is time to Let the Revolution Begin.  We need your help since our Government has gone AWOL and in a closet.

We need Bobby Jindal to tear down that wall of secrecy.  He needs to hear our voices, our presence, our united way.  Only then can we hope that Louisiana can return from the dread.  Only then can Louisiana become that great shiny state on the hill.  But, it is going to require a thousand points of light--to light a fire that will burn bright emphasizing that Louisiana citizens will not be taken lightly or for granted any more.

Email me at steve@bayoubuzz.com or call at 504-339-3254 and let’s show the government power brokers that the people own this beautiful state, not our politicians.   Tell me how you can help, we need you.

Why does Jindal and Tucker think our state leaders should be paid so much when they have done so Little. We are at bottom of the barrel except for How much we pay the politicians that keeps at the bottom of the barrel. Jindal gave us the fools gold standard.

I know of several large companies who cannot get enough people to move to New Orleans despite added incentives to do so. Obviously there are many people who are not interested in our "broken schools, poor jobs, crumbling infrastructure, and crooked politicians." Perhaps I am naive, but I still think Jindal is a chance (I would never credit any political animal with the "certainty" of their good intentions, I do not trust ANY of them enough for that <now, that would be STUPID>) of correcting what has been wrong with our state's politics for such a very long time. I cannot help but compare Houston - where I had relatives and visited as a child and still go to a few times each year - to New Orleans. Progress vs. stagnation. They're doing something right... uh...in case you haven't noticed... we're not. The popularity of people like Morial and Edwards mystifies me (now Cher, dat dere bes s-t-o-o-p-i-d yeah!).

Ain't life in Louisiana grand. We are ranked 49th or 50th in the country in areas of education, health care, and most everything else but in the top 5 for the political class pay. What makes you wonder, is why all those people want to come back to broken schools, poor jobs, crumbling infastructure, and crooked politicans. Go figure.

Jindal has now allowed 90 bills to become law without bothering to sign them. That is four than the four previous governors unsigned bills added together. No wonder he can not veto the legislators pay raise when he can not even be bothered to do his job as governor. http://www.2theadvocate.com/news/20637984.html

This insulting pay raise legislation comes from a cozy club house of successful wealthy legal and busine$$ profe$$ionals. Proof positive that the wealthy politician does not know how or have long forgotten how the poor "Joe Worker" live; either that or they just brazenly don't care. We common "Joe Workers" are being robbed by the price gouging craze affecting per gallon gas, groceries and utilities--every passing day, coming closer to dark destitution of poverty. And the Louisiana House and Senate want to take MORE $$$$ away from US to take cozy care of THEM???!!!??? News flash: Jindal's weak--it's gonna be a hard 4 years, folks. Pray Jindal doesn't make a go for Vice President!! It's evident Louisiana's House and Senate members feel comfy smug--thinking they can't be fired for betraying their voters. Time to prove they're WRONG!! IT'S TIME TO RECALL EVERY SINGLE ONE WHO VOTED FOR THIS PAY RAISE!! Jay Dardienne is in Baton Rouge, waiting to take your request for petitions for RECALLING your elected officials. It takes A LOT of signatures I don't think will be all that hard to get---and send those documents back to Dardienne's office. Unite, stand up tall and proud---or allow yourselves to be ROBBED!!!

This is what will happen: Jindal will veto the pay raise at 11:59 on the last day to do so. He will then explain that he was only trying to get the legislature to do what was right in "correcting" the mistake they made. After that, he can say that he never intended to go back on his promise to the voters to not allow a pay raise for legislators effective in this term. Then, he will go to the legislature and tell them to pass the same legislation, except make it effective after the next election cycle. This is his only way out, since he promised the voters one thing and promised the legislators a mutually exclusive other thing. This way he will get what he wants out of the legislature, get what he wants out of the court of public opinion, and get the hell out of Louisiana and into Washington. If he allows this pay raise to stand, every conservative in the country will find it impossible to support someone with no conservative spine. If he gets out of this, he is slicker than EWE, (Bill) Clinton, and Vitter combined. God help us all.

Jindal does not care about his voters and if he did he would keep his promise and not allow this pay- raise. If Jindal had any respect for his voters he would not be allowing a false ad to be running giving him credit for tax cuts made by Governor Blanco. Jindal thinks his voters are to stupid to see the truth and know that the one tax cut under him was one he fought against. Now why would he fight a tax cut and then allow this pay raise ? Could it be the deal he seems to have made behind closed doors with hid buddy Tucker. Does Jindal think because he let 24 bills become law with out signing since he has become governor, is a record to be proud of.

My doubts about Boasso are because he was coming from the legislature. Once someone is a member of that tainted fraternity, they are usually ruined. Mike Strain is a huge improvement over Bob Odom, but he caters to his former pals in the legislature much more than he should. But Bob Odom CONSPIRED with legislators, so catering is a gigantic improvement.

My sentiments exactly, all politics aside.......................... But I still have 'zip-0' faith in him..... He believes the Legislature is either going to do what's right or is going to be forced to do what is right????? Well first one must have a firm understanding of what Jindal thinks is right or wrong in the first place....... And so far, anything he has taken issue on is generic at best... I see no earth stopping ground shaking record shattering ideals coming forth from this purported 'genius'……….. I see and hear business as usual…….. His policy and agendas are really sort of Walter Mitty when I observe and evaluate them….. He has no ‘Real World’ – ‘Real Time’ experience in life…….. He is simply another degree or a different shade of a Dr. Phil, or Oprah Winfrey, or Geraldo Rivera……………….. We don’t need mouth pieces, image pursuers, pretty poster boy’s for Guv…. I wish I had seen some of Walter Boasso’s ads, I heard of them, it sounds to me that he pegged the board correctly……………………… I am not saying that I know for sure that Walter Boasso would have made a better Governor, I only met him once.... Seemed like an o.k. guy........ I suppose for the most part we are dealing with ideals and values where Jindal is concerned.... But I am tired of hearing what 'sounds' good, or seeing what 'looks' good..... I as a citizen of the State of Louisiana want to become empowered TO DO WHAT IS GOOD..........................................

Jindal doesn't realize that his commitment to the voters overrides any secret deal he made with legislators. If he wants to convince people that things have really changed in Louisiana then he should veto the payraise.

...TIME... - Unfortunately, I think my fantasy scenario is completely hopeless. I definitely don't think that Jindal could have planned a doublecross on the legislators in advance. If so, he totally botched the bluff and did much more damage than he had to. But politicians, being the liars and manipulators that they ALL are, are very adaptable. If Jindal realized several days ago that his ridiculous denials weren't being bought, and then the published promise to the voters surfaces everywhere, then he might be devious enough to then plan the doublecross scenario. --- I still don't believe the doublecross will happen. I still believe that Jindal is a "conservative" politician, but that the politician part of that label overrides the conservative part about 1,000 to 1. But I'm proposing the doublecross as his only way out of this mess. Whether he does is for the right reasons or the wrong ones, we'd still get the pleasure of slapping down those a$$hole legislators, wouldn't we?

Well Ralphie, I too have that 'fantasy' optimism in the back of my mind...... I do wish something like that would be the case, and then we could all get a laugh out of it, and realize we are all human prone to jumping to conclusions, making incorrect judgements, etc., etc., etc...... But I do not think that is the case, and if it were, well then, don't you suppose that would be an even more deviouse way of manipulating the poor uninformed or inexperienced hopeful masses?? It 'ingratiate' one's self to the public to that extent??????? No,,, mistakes I can understand, not using 100% good judgement all the time I can understand, not being perfect, I can understand, but I am going to fall back on what Bobby below posted, because those are my suspicions, I am making the same allegations, I may be wrong, but I do believe time will prove it.... Trouble is, I only have one life to live, and I am tired of waiting for permission from fleebs so that I can do what is right..................................................

Dan, Have we ever elected a governor (or a legislator, or a parish councilman, or a judge) who is not a liar? Hell NO. Politicians lie, because voters are gullible and stupid, it's a given. A rare candidate or two might not lie, but their average percentage of the vote will be under 1%. Jindal lied, has printed evidence of the lie, and is now caught in his own trap, and looking like a schoolkid who got caught redhanded. Smirk, squirm and deny, but no escape. He has one chance at redemption, but I think it's hopeless. He could wait till the session ends Monday, then veto the pay raise, and say that he endured the criticism and bluffed the legislature to salvage the last week of this session. Then trump them with the veto, call them out, and invoke the power of the people to come down on the legislature next session if they try any retaliation. The odds on that scenario are longer than winning the lottery, but it would be a master stroke. When the legislators call him a liar, and say he went back on his word, he could say that you don't tip your hand when negotiating and it's not lying when you're facing blackmailers. For the sake of the state, I hope this miracle happens). Jindal would still have a lot of image to restore, but it could be done if he truly handles this like the whole thing was a covert operation to salvage THIS session. Then he'd have to play hardball with the crooks in the legislature from here on out. Just think how sweet it would be if Jindal's smirk in the news conference was because he knew he was going to play the hole card on the legislators and not on the people.

Bobby: That is not true. Many of us knew exactly who Bobby Jindal was. We tried to warn everyone but people would just not listen. The media shut us out, the politicians shut us out, and the voters just closed their ears and believed what they wanted to beleive about Jindal regardless of what anyone had to say about the issue. And now we are stuck with a liar for Governor.

I never believed Bobby Jindal in the first place. I was afraid people were blindly followig him woithout knowing his history. We knew very little about Jindal. What stances did he take in college? It is no doubt some group wants himn to be president. You don't come out of no where and end up on the national scene in a few years unless you have some powerful people backing you. Look at Obam. Where id he come from? We don't know much about his history. When people use chritianity and the churches for their base, it has always worried me. The Christian body as a a whole is very easily led. I am a Christian so its not that I have something against Christianity. Every politician starts with some big base to propel him into the rising star status. Bush used the christian right. I had hope that I was 100% wrong about Jindal just as I hope that I am 100% wrong about Obama. Jindal and Obamaz's spin machine are very much alike. Have you heard some of the latest commercials about what Jindal has already done. Thanks for keeping the fire going.

Thank you Stephen, dear. We believe that your call will mark the beginning of a new era. However, it will take more. We wrote the following on our website at http://rhettswife.createforum.net/phpbb2/rhettswife-about233.html Yesterday the governor promised New Orleanians that the National Guard would remain throught the end of the year. Good. However, when questioned about the veto of the legislative raise he laughed and showed his smirk - the citizens of Louisiana should not be the brunt of a joke. His pat 1 1/2 minute response is not acceptable. Read C. B. Forgotson, Bayou Buzz, The Dead Pelican, etc. Read the perks, read the fact that citizens have set up websites for recall of certain legislators, read about the difficulty of recalling, but remember the smirk on the face of Piyush Jindal and become enraged. As old as we are, we will take a petition to recall that smirking jerk and walk the streets to seek to recall him and others. Citizens must unite and show how we feel. Shoes are made for walking and we mean a good set of shoes with support. Put them on and let's stroll our streets and remove the lily livered chicken that calls himself governor. He forgot the people who voted for him and that many did not. Faced with his obivious disregard for the citizens of this state we can deliver the required number of registered voters. Let us unite ourselves, steeled by the anger of his laugh and smirk, steeled by those legislators who no longer want to speak about the issue, and emboldened by a determination to revive a true new Louisiana and one that is free of political rhetoric, graft, etc. The challenge is ours. Let's make the Secretary of State send all of us the recall packets and let us get to work. Onward citizens of Louisana, onward!!!!

Steve, Your video of Jindal's bullshit answers was great. Here's another angle on that pitiful excuse for a "news conference." ---- http://www.wwltv.com/video/news-index.html?nvid=256247 (There is also a link on thedeadpelican.com ) ---- Jindal's arrogance in this clip is as bad as Tucker's and Duplessis's. Although we must hold the legislators primarily responsible for this crime, Jindal's actions are quickly moving him down to their level. I'm sure he'll hide from view from now until the veto deadline. But if he does show his face, reporters need to continue challenging him for some real answers. We all know that his higher ambitions are what motivates him. But he may soon realize that his higher ambitions are at risk if he does not change course on this one. Keep up the pressure, and see you at the rally.
