Here are statements from House Speaker Jim Tucker concerning the pay raise and a statement from an legislative opponent of the raise, Rep. Walker Hines and Roger Villere, Chairman of the Louisiana Republican Party:
Statement from Jim Tucker
"I respect Governor Jindal's veto of Senate Bill 672. Our goal was to assure that citizens from all walks of life could afford public service.
The Louisiana State Constitution currently requires that the legislature set its own pay and this should be changed.
As Speaker, I and the members of the House are committed to working with the Governor to continue the unprecedented reforms we have achieved in the past six months."
Statement From State Representative Walker Hines (D-95) Regarding Governor Jindal's Veto of SB 672:
"Over the past few weeks, I witnessed the power of democracy with more constituents becoming engaged in the political process than ever before.
While I was a vocal opponent of the pay raise and voted against it, I have sympathy for many of my colleagues who need additional financial security while serving.
I know that some of my constituents may be disappointed by the Governor's veto of the pay raise as I was planning on donating the increase to much needed projects in Hollygrove, the most distressed area of my District.
I hope that the Governor and the Legislature can work together and address this controversial issue in a future session in a manner satisfactory to all parties involved, most importantly, including the public.
I will continue to dedicate the time and resources necessary to improve my District, especially the Hollygrove, Pigeontown, and Gerttown neighborhoods that are struggling to survive Post-Katrina."
Roger F. Villere Jr., Chairman of the Republican Party of Louisiana, released the following statement today on Governor Jindal’s veto of the legislative pay raise:
“I commend Governor Bobby Jindal for his decision to veto S.B. 672, the legislative pay raise bill. The voters of Louisiana have spoken very clearly on this matter and Governor Jindal has heard their voice and retained their confidence. I look forward to moving past this issue and helping to redirect our state’s attention to the important reforms that must be addressed in the future. Governor Jindal and the Republican leadership will have an ambitious agenda for the future and the Republican Party will be helping to promote the Governor’s reforms. Finally, I want to thank the large number of Republican voters, volunteers, donors and State Central Committee members who have contacted us regarding this matter. Your voice has been heard.”
If some of thesse legislatures are having a tough time making ends meet, then they need to quit. No one is forcing these men and women to keep the job. If some of them can't make ends meet, then I am afraid I don't want them making financial decisions for the state. It is real simple. How much do you have coming in? And how much do you have going out? I know in government that this does not work, but in real life, that is the standard. Written by Bobby
