Louisiana Spoke And Wins With Gov. Jindal Veto

Written by: Stephen Sabludowsky

Tens of thousands of people have spoken with the greatest force in Louisiana since Katrina and Rita. We can only be thankful for their efforts. Governor Jindal has vetoed the legislative pay raise and we thank him for his belated wisdom.

Now, let's help him build this state. The massive statewide rally scheduled for July 7 is cancelled. We can all rejoice by our concerted efforts. The people have spoken. We own this state, not the government".

There are so many people to thank for this “TEAM EFFORT”.

In this whole ordeal, the people of Louisiana were wiser than those individuals they elected.  In the future, let us hope and pray that our leaders listen and not be pressured politically which is what we had to do to put our government on the right course.

My special thanks to the thousands of people who got involved with our Citizen Can movement and were helpful in planning the rally at the State Capitol.  They stepped up to the plate (such as Legewatch, Fred Dent, Pat Bergeron, Moon Griffon, NBC 33 in Baton Rouge and so, so many others) and they are too many people to name them all for their help.  May we remember and cherish the moment.  Louisiana Spoke and now it is time to recover from this trauma, help our Governor to the extent that we can.  Louisiana can be stronger and overcome manmade and natural catastrophes.  We have witnessed the beauty of our state and of our people.

There is absolutely no reason for pride in citizen action here! What in blazes does it matter, if citizens become angry at the governor for failing to veto legislation that the media have chosen to oppose? Who in blazes do the journalists think they are? There may have been a time when journalists could be trusted for solid judgments, but that may be just a fiction taught in journalism classes. In my experience, the media have more often been institutions of propaganda. We were told Kathleen Blanco was a wimp, we swallowed it, so she bowed out of the race, even though she may have performed better than anyone else would have in the situation. We were told that Bobby Jindal was an honest man, we swallowed it, so he won the race, even though writers like Mike Stagg of Lafayette published ample evidence of his receipt of funds from major out-of-state Republicans, using LLI's to get around campaign-finance limits. Now, because journalists have told us that the legislative pay raise must be vetoed, citizens have swallowed it, and they have acted, just as the journalist prodded them to do. WHERE ARE THE BRAVE JOURNALISTS AND CITIZENS WHEN IT COMES TO THE ENORMOUS SUMS BEING SPENT ON BUSH'S INSANE WARS WHILE THE GULF COAST MUST BEG FOR MONEY THAT NEVER EVEN MAKES IT PAST THE CORRUPT HANDS ASSIGNED TO DISTRIBUTE IT? I do not admire citizens who bark when told to bark and sit when told to sit. When journalists oppose the military budget as vigorously as they oppose the legislative budget, then I will heed their judgments with respect again.

Well folks, Steve 'officially' announced that no recall of the Governor should be pursued............... And he even ‘officially’ put a stop to the meaningless June 7th? Rally on the capital steps he was 'organizing' or helping to organize…… And like the mesmerized media junkies you are, the lot of you danced, and are going to continue to dance to the tunes he plays or has played..... You allowed Steve to pursue his pointless campaign, rattle your minds, and recall petitions were filed...... Law says that once it is filed, 180 days must pass before another recall can be filed........ So in other words, you followed Steve's lead, launched a nuke where a big stick or a club would have sufficed.......... I told Steve to lay out the facts, the pros, the cons, and what to expect as a result of recall actions pursed...... In so many words..... He did not..... So now, you have no recall 'bluff' 'threat' or 'cajole' in your arsenal, and that unties the Governments hands to do whatever they want to do clear up until Jan of 2009.... Without fear of repreussion through the deployment of legal and forceable action.... You can scream to high heaven, it doesn’t matter. Winds of Katrina Steve????? Winds of K indeed……….. So my advice is to either (a) continue on with the recall petition and make it happen, because that is the course of destiny you decided to pursue, or (b) STFU and sit back while they do as they please………… Myself, I didn’t vote for Pi in the first place, I had already had exposure to his office and his ideals long before he ran for Guv, but at the same time I did not advocate recall on this issue petty or not and further suggested compromise on his part to turn this around…. He may not be a very good Guv. but I do want to see him do the best he can do, and to do the right things…………………………. Because after all, we are going to be stuck with him for some 1000 + more days..... He ended up with the compromise. However, before he did, you decided to hold his feet to the coals, now it is time for you to take responsibility for your actions and pursuits,,, Now it is you, the voters principles and ideals that are in question…………. No follow through is a sign of weakness and indeterminate understanding... Nothing personal Steve, you and I have our differences where tactics and logical pursuits are concerned..... My question is; "What is the good of Louisiana you are purportedly pursuing and or advocating?"""""

I agree RH that our citizenry should "be vigilant and start playing a stronger role in the government of this state" - I suspect the veto is an attempt to quiet the masses and prevent that very thing.

We would have to hold our noses and accept Landrieu. One thing is certain - we voted for neither. If the veto does not go on, we will have to be watching every step every legislator and the governor makes. The citizens must be vigilant and start playing a stronger role in the government of this state and not just a few political rascals. We still stand strong on our stand and will never falter for what we believe must be a Nouveau Louisiana.

I mean after all, we are speaking of ethics here or are we not? Oh, perhaps that is a faux paradigm I am focused on.... It is not so much we, but I, and not so much you, but they....... Or is it all simply illusiory???????

O.K. Steve, excellent repost, the trauma thing was a bit 'reaching' on your part, I like a 'Drama' free environment.... So now that this little veto 'mess' is over with and out of the way do you have anything you may want to suggest to Pi that would be of some help in alleviating more than a few of the State's concerns for jobs, reconstruction, coastal restoration, coastal protection, etc., etc., etc.?????

Now that it has been announced that Jindal has indeed vetoed the pay raise bill it is appropriate to bring up an old saying: "it takes a big man to admit when he's made a mistake". Maybe this has worked out in the best interest of the people after all, as many have answered the wake up call and became involved. However, this is Louisiana. Stay tuned.

Steve, dear, we usually agree with you but this time we have a different view. The rage of ordinary citizens has shown us the rush of power. Now should that stop us even now. We say, NO, NO, NO. We should not have to express our fury - he should have adhered to his promises and platform. When will we be called back into action again - will he use some lame excuse again in the future. We want a leader with steel down below or in her fists. That is not what Pi is all about. Nothing but the political rhetoric and politics of the past in a smirking face of an alleged genius. We say continue the recall pressure on him and the other legislators. DO NOT BACK DOWN BUT STRIDE FORWARD FOR A NEW LOUISIANA!!!!!
