A major storm swept through Louisiana causing substantial damage, yet, nobody was hurt physically and no property was damaged.Still, in the storm’s wake, the carnage was spewed everywhere; It might have caused irreparable destruction.
This was no Hurricane.Unlike Katrina, this destruction was “man-made”.In the aftermath, we have witnessed the totally collapse of values among our legislators. We have seen Governor Bobby Jindal become the emperor without a backbone. The result is that both institutions will be colored with the green slime of greed and yellow cowardice until the next election days.
In short, this entire episode has been pathetic. However, it is not over.
Almost three years ago, Governor Blanco was reamed for appearing to be weak during the absolute worse natural disaster in modern history that changed the basic fabric of our society.Yet, she stood up to the most powerful man in the world yet received little credit for her strength.By contrast, our current Governor could not stand up to a bunch of selfish legislators although he clearly has enjoyed the citizen mandate strongly blowing behind his back.
Those who voted for a pay raise say they had an argument:Their pay has not increased in 28 years. Some did not anticipate the amount of time they would be spending on the legislative job.Yet, our legislators get perks, reverence and business opportunities. They are still able to remain powerful by filling their own campaign funds and to do essentially what they please. They walk up the hills of the elite, not down the bayous of the broke as do many of our citizens.Very few of them are hurting financially. The Speaker’s desire to bring in new legislative blood from among the poor and the disadvantaged--smacks with insincerity.
However, no matter how “right-sounding” be their arguments, the tenacious weather of the public cries were so obvious screeching-“NO, NO, NO SALARY INCREASE, NOT NOW”.
One asks:How could the majority of the legislators miss the voters’ overwhelming demands—“NO pay raise while the average citizen is still suffering so much post- Katrina?
Despite their tepid arguments, the legislators should have and still can just timely quit their positions if they really cannot perform their elected jobs at the current pay rate under which they ran for public office. If they cannot perform their public jobs, let them become a legislative refugee, become politically homeless without a House or a Senate.
By their votes, even considering the Friday compromise, the House majority proved they were deaf to the winds of change and even worse, public outrage. As a result, those who preferred their own self-interests will know the public will now hold them with the highest degree of disdain. It will take many “blue skies” of calm for public faith to return, if ever.
Through this episode, Governor Jindal’s actions were also inexcusable. He failed to take advantage of the deep-rooted populace emotions which would have supported his agenda despite of, and because of the legislator’s selfishness.By threatening to veto the legislation he could have swelled the citizens’ respect in his source of power and righteousness.Paradoxically, Jindal has gone to the four corners of the state reminding us to “get a plan” for the upcoming Hurricane season.Yet, when it came time for him to uphold his own political agenda over this highly emotional issue, he failed to take the case to the people and “caved”.He now walks among the weak.
How our Governor could not hear the roar and lead the charge is a great Louisiana mystery.Consequently, the average citizen now wonders what deal did he strike with the legislative leaders?
Which raises a separate but equally important issue:For weeks, I have urged that the Administration engage in the government transparency.Instead, Governor Jindal has been intent upon insulating the inner workings of his office. We can only guess his intentions. His recent press statement following the House vote indicates a legislative shut down in retaliation to a veto threat. This lack of information epitomizes the opposite of what he promised us during the campaign, his transition and his inauguration. Our Governor constantly forgets that he and the legislature are public servants and owe openness for the people.
Because of this lack of governmental silence, we are ignorant of the inner workings of our government and are forced to visualize the worse. Due to last week’s actions, we are compelled to equate our legislature motivated by the winds smothered by greed. We are forced to admit our Governor will slosh in the secretive and meek.
What is so incredible is that in a mere week, all of the good will of this new legislature and this new Administration has so pitifully crumbled. Now, over the next few hours or days, until the Senate acts, we wait as the eye of the storm passes.Once again we will likely feel the legislature’s insult and their total disregard to the public trust.
Although much damage has been wrought, we still hope that the legislature will either drop their pay raise proposals or pass the raise and then quit their jobs.It would be the “public family values” thing to do.We also still hope that Governor Jindal will somehow find his vertebrae and stop trying to be all things to all people.
Yet, behind every storm there is a silver lining.Never before has the public been so galvanized regardless of political party. We now know the legislature and Administration will totally disregard the people. We now know our Governor will speak “gobblygook” and will make empty promises. With this knowledge, we are stronger even if our elected officials are weaker since our expectations are so much less.
This pay raise has never been about money but doing the right thing. Our legislature and our Governor have simply gone down the wrong path in history.
Yes, a storm swept through Louisiana last week and rudely changed the political landscape. We thought we were protected. We now know we must get a plan to deal with avarice and cowardice. This political calamity has inflicted great destruction. We can only hope that when the second-half of the threat comes our way today or later this week with a vote on final passage, our elected officials will remember the gales of the people and detour into a different course. Our state deserves unselfish strong leaders who will stand up to the elements of sacrifice.Let’s hope our government ignores their own pocketbooks which brims with favoritism, perks, and advantages much more than the public will ever enjoy or can ever realize. If our government officials cannot appreciate what they have, those who insist on raising their own salaries should resign and admit being incapable. We will understand their evacuation and say good luck in the private sector where they obviously belong.
What makes Jindal think that Louisiana legislators are going to keep their end of the bargain with this pay raise deal? BTW this is an excellent website... great writing, with one correction: "Gobbledygook". Keep up the good work and the good discussion. Written by ymbt

Yes, I would concur if any one wanted to nominate "Butch" Gautreaux from Morgan City the chack-ass of the quarter...... Not so much for what he has or hasn't done in this session, but for all the krupp he pulled during previous sessions.... He is just another one of the pigs at the trough wearing sheeps clothing.... But, that's life, and that is politics.... When the time comes, I want to wish him a Bon Voyage........ I am sure the former employees of Marine Shale Processors feel the same................................ Written by Franklin Robicheaux

This is what we wrote to the news paper....
Subject: Legislative pay raises...... We... The People Have Been Forgotten
I am writing again to voice my concerns with the excessive spending of our State and Federal Government.
How can they even think about giving themselves pay raises when the people are struggling enough as it is?
With the high prices of gas, utilities, all kinds of insurances (that we must have), groceries, etc., etc. Not to mention that we, the people of South Louisiana is still trying to recover from the hurricanes. We are waiting and waiting for authorization for our hurricane protection system and that keeps getting shot down some how.
People on Social Security get a messily $30.00 or $40.00 a month raise. But the cost of living goes up much higher than that. People working 20 hours a week at minimum wage want be able to afford to keep going to work.
Most of these people in office have other jobs or own their own companies. They knew from the get go how much they were going to make when they ran for their position.
Is that why we are paying so much for Gas.....
When is it going to stop.
Is that how they go about getting money back, make the people pay more tax ....and
Is that what them kids are dieing for .......Freedom it sure cost alot.....
Thanks alot

Subject: RE: Legislative pay raises...... We... The People Have Beem Forgotten
Dear Mr. & Mrs. Rowley:
Thank you for your email. I have learned that the entire story never gets reported.
A separate, non-political commission conducted a study and reported that the Legislature should receive a substantial pay raise. The Speaker of the House, Senate President, and the Governor all approved of a pay raise. The Governor has now modified his position because of the political backlash. It also shouldn't be lost that legislative pay would still be well below political appointments, some of which have increased to several hundred thousand dollars this year.
The pay raise is not my bill, nor my cause. I also have a good job so the raise isn't necessary for me. We have been in session six months this year and the time commitment is night and weekends, dealing with legislation and constituent concerns. This pay raise is important for many legislators. We will lose many good legislators without it and we will prevent other good people from running. We have made great progress this year with strong ethics reform, business tax cuts, repeal of the Stelly tax and others. I even supported stronger ethics reform than proposed by the administration, including the "no cup of coffee" rule and requiring elected officials to disclose political appointments given to campaign contributors. I also am moving through the system my "Grants for Grads" program which is an economic development incentive program to keep our college graduates in Louisiana by rebating their initial state income tax payments as a down payment on a first home.
I think we are missing the forest for the trees. While there is debate on whether it is too high, we have to vote on what is presented.
This is a difficult issue which requires a tough decision, but I have to consider everything and make the best decision I can. Thank you for writing and please always write for the full story. I am lucky to have such informed and caring constituents and I will continue to work hard for my district.

Butch Gautreaux will be laughing all the way to the bank. This increase also increases his retirement. If they had campaigned on this issue, I could have some respect for them but to get elected as reformers and pull this stunt. I hope all of you saw the Representative yesterday who (I will paraphrase here) announced that he would give anyone opting out of the pay raise his bank account number to deposit theirs in meaning he would not be ashamed to take it. Tucker than asked if it was in the Bahamas or Baton Rouge. He said Baton Rouge. Tucker said same same. They really do think this is a joke. Too bad there is not a line on Louisiana Income Tax form to double you deductions. Written by Sharon

Texas officials: Angry man set gov's mansion fire By APRIL CASTRO, Associated Press Writer............
1 hour, 48 minutes ago.................
AUSTIN, Texas - Investigators said Monday they believe someone angry with the government set the Texas Governor's Mansion on fire this month, and they offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.............
State Fire Marshal Paul Maldonado had said last week that investigators did not believe the blaze was politically motivated, but he changed course Monday.........
"It is likely that feelings of anger may have motivated his crime," Maldonado said at a news conference Monday. "He may be known to get angry and express strong opinions about the government, Governor Perry himself, the death penalty, the renovation of the mansion or other political issues."...............

Jindal thinks his supporters are so butt stupid they will forget about this and still support him. Jindalhas allowed 24 bills to become law with out his signature. He may not a sign a bill but you can bet he will never veto anything his boy Tucker wants.
Wake up and understand Jindal has no respect for the fools who voted him in office. He figures if you were dumb enough to support him , your dumb enough to believe he is looking after your best interest now.
Busted the spending cap and fought against tax cuts, just so he can afford to double the legislators pay. Written by Diaperman

Stephen, I agree with most of your comments. However I wish you could have kept to the subject. This is about the People, The Legislature, and Governor Jindal. Thank you for not blaming this on Bush but Blanco has nothing to do with this. The Legislature did not do this during her time in office; so she can say whatever she wants but it can never be known what she would have actually done. There is a wide range of opinion on her performance in office especially on Katrina but that has nothing to do with this.
Jindal should veto this bill. The majority of us who believe he is the right man for the job believe that. If the Legislature thinks that they can justify doubling their pay, they should do it in an election year. That way the people (who is after all those who will pay for it) would have some say. This is one of the most cowardly acts I have seen in recent years. Did I not read that the $6000 expense account was given to them in the 90's and then there is per diem. So it has not been 28 years since they got an increase in pay. I seriously doubt that most taxpayers have gotten that amount over the same period. A lot of them would love to have $50 a day per diem.
And how many in Louisiana can take a job and then double their pay much less triple it. IMHO their pay should be determined by the State's rank in economic position. In that case at 26th in salary they are grossly overpaid.
This is so wrong on so many levels it is hard to be able to put it all together. Written by Sharon

Years ago, well, MANY years ago, I well remember the first time I marched out on the field in Tiger Stadium. The Golden Band from Tiger Land!! As well as the others may have prepared us for that first Pre-Game show, NOTHING could have prepared me for what I heard that night. A sound few have heard and yet I still remember it so well. This is the sound I heard last week from we, the citizens, of this state. A deafning roar that, obviously, the Governmental Side-Steppers did not hear. Hopefully, what was done by this Legislature will not soon be forgotte by the people of Louisiana. Makes me worrie, as was mentioned, what sort of back room deals were made to bring this about? I can just hear ole' Mr Edwin roaring with laughter......... Written by Mike D

Jindal's unwillingnes to veto the legislative pay raise implies that a secret deal was made on ethics reform. In exchange for giving up some freebies, legislators were promised a big increase in pay. If Jindal reneges on the deal and vetoes the increase, he risks losing his legislative agenda for the remainder of his term. While he may say he opposes the increase publicly, secretly he wants it to go through without taking the blame. Written by David Quidd

It is amazing how folks are so easily amused….. Stevo, forward this to Pi man…. I’ve got his fix for him…. Veto the bill, tell one of his ‘aids’ down the hall to tell someone on the floor that 26K is acceptable to him…. Spend a little ‘time’ writing another bill on the taxpayers dime……….. put it through the house…. and he won’t sign the next bill…… Now everyone will be happy…. Why in the sam hell do they have to make things so hard? Governing is easy, politics is hard….. Leave politics to the side Pi man, you are no ‘rockstar’…… and you certainly aren’t a ‘rocket scientist’ either….. Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeessshhh…..
