Major Louisiana Scandal Or Fantasy Suit Against Major Law Firm, Politicians?

If the allegations or even a few of the more specific allegations as claimed by Plaintiff James G. Perdigao against one of the largest law firms in the State of Louisiana, Adams and Reese, are true, this state and New Orleans could be facing the greatest scandal ever-- that could have national implications.

Plaintiff Perdigao in his petition claimed that he worked for Adams and Reese and performed commercial ethics law for the firm.  The scope of the case alleged in the petition mentions major political figures that include Edwin Edwards, Robert Guidry (and family members) , Congressman Jefferson, Mose Jefferson, US Attorney, Jim Letten, Cleo Fields, World Com, former Mayor Marc Morial, Eddie Jordan, former Attorney General Dick Thornburgh, Louisiana state officials, and scores of others.

The names above involved do not suggest any wrongdoing on the part of any of the mentioned individuals but the allegations in the petition linked below do name specific individuals and certain members of the Adams and Reese law firm allegedly engaging in wrongdoing, and major ethics violations.

Perdigao claims to have protested regarding many actions by certain high officials of Adams and Reese, yet, plaintiff stayed with the job despite what he calls threats against him.

The allegations are part of a public document James G. Perdigao versus Adams and Reese, et. al. and the petition lays out the claims in detail.  Any and all of the allegations will presumably be tried by a Court.   The case is currently lodged in the U.S. Court, Eastern District of Louisiana.

One of the allegations claim a scheme where Robert Guidry with the knowledge of certain members of the law firm engaged in attempting to bribe Eddie Jordan through Congressman William Jefferson by the payment of cash.  The scheme allegedly occurred  during the trial of Edwin Edwards.  The allegations suggest that the claims made by Guidry against Edwards were manufactured.  The plaintiff further claims that Guidry received favorable treatment for his testimony.  If these allegations are proven true, it could have a bearing upon the Edwards conviction.

Another allegation involves allegations of a conflict of interest between World Com and Bernard Ebbers with the alleged knowledge of some members of the same firm.  These allegations even name former US Attorney Dick Thornbourg who was investigating the World Com debacle.

Another allegation involves the role that former New Orleans Mayor, Marc Morial, played with Adams and Reese and an alleged scheme to circumvent the Ethics Board.  Another allegation involved Tim Coulon, former President of Jefferson Parish.  Other allegations refer to activities involving high state officials.

There are many other allegations made by the plaintiff in a petition of over 73 pages long.

A petition or “federal complaint” are only allegations made by a plaintiff and do not constitute proof.

On Thursday evening, WDSU aired the following statement by Adams and Reese:

“The lawsuit filed Tuesday represents the latest episode in Perdigao’s continuing fantasy of blaming the government and our firm for his wrongdoing and lashing out at those who are holding him accountable for his actions.

Adams and Reese denies Perdigao’s allegations of wrongdoing. We look forward to his upcoming criminal trial and we will continue to cooperate with the U.S. Attorney and the FBI to ensure that justice is done. “

Dears, reading that little old suit makes us remember John Grisham's novel "The Firm". There is that old saying, where there is smoke there is fire. We are having the vapors over this one. My goodness, to think what might happen to all those attorneys, etc. Has the Louisiana State Bar Association and the Ethics Committee received a complaint yet? Mr. Letten, dear, now you do not have to respond inasmuch as your name is mentioned and of course you will not want to make a statement about an onging legal procedure. HMMMMMMMMMM!!!!! Back to our newest reading materials. See you later, alligators, dears.

The allegations sound very plausible to me, unless one believes in the complete innocence of Bill Jefferson, Eddie Jordan, Marc Morial, Bernie Ebbers, Guidry etc. It will be easy to prove, e.g., if Ebbers, Guidry were ever clients of Adams & Reese. We must ask ourselves why "white collar crime" is always treated so daintily? In reality "white collar crime" affects/steals from a majority of citizens, because it affects everyone's pocketbooks and taxes, whereas a street robber only steals from one person (and his motive may be to feed himself). Could it be as the Petition suggests that "white collar crime" is treated differently because the hoarded wealth and greed of "white collar criminals" distorts the administration of justice by political bribes via campaign contributions or political threats?

You have to have concerns about any company that would hire Marc Morial as a key member of their team. That's enough to convince me that there may well be some truth to the allegations.
