New Orleans Area Golf Course, Not For Profits Should Not Be Funded By Louisiana

Written by: Jeff Crouere

Buzz Right Back----E-Mail a Friend----Print Page

Louisiana state government is in the midst of a severe budget crunch. The Jindal administration will be making cuts to higher education and health care to balance the budget.

Our spending will actually decrease from last year because of the national economic downturn and the drop in oil and gas prices.

This decrease in revenue should not be an excuse to raise taxes on anyone, especially during a deep recession.

It is imperative that our political leaders use this fiscal crisis as an opportunity to tighten the fiscal belt and eliminate unnecessary spending.

Our budget has ballooned in recent years and it is time to bring spending down to the real world level, in line with other states.

There are two spending items which should be targeted for elimination. One is the obnoxious legislative slush fund which allows non-governmental organizations to receive state money. This fund has about $30 million for non-profit and local organizations that should be funded by the private sector, not state taxpayers. If these groups can’t make it without state funding, then that is just too bad. It is time we stopped going to the taxpayers of Louisiana to bailout every politically connected group in the state.

Another outrageous recipient of state spending is the Tournament Players Club of Louisiana in Avondale. Although this golf course is very impressive and hosts the Zurich Classic, it needs to survive on its own and not due to the generosity of state taxpayers.

State legislators are getting ready to approve a bailout of $9.2 million for this troubled club.

It is ludicrous that any golf course in Louisiana is receiving even one dollar of state funding, and to waste millions on this project is obscene. I’m sure that every other golf course would like money as would many other struggling businesses, yet they don’t have the support of the powerful State Senator John Alario (D-Westwego).

Alario has been the guardian for the Tournament Players Club from the very beginning. He started the whole process which led to the construction and funding of this course. It became the new home of the Zurich Classic even though the former home course, English Turn is more popular with the golfers.

The Tournament Players Club has received a total of $18.4 million in state funds since its inception.

Those dollars could have gone to much better causes but that money has already been wasted. Today, we should not compound our error by wasting more money on the course.

In this financial environment, we can no longer afford to waste millions of dollars on golf.

Our economic woes are not a game and if we do not get serious, we will not recover. This is a joke that legislators need to stop immediately. If not, let’s hope Governor Jindal has the sense to veto this wasteful expenditure.

I cannot speak for Jeff, only express my own opinion. Government cannot do things (like Universal Healthcare) because they waste too much money on needless crap. If - "IF" mind you - government spends money and gets back MORE then they spend then that is acceptable (as it provides government with MORE money). "Profit" is "a good thing" - profit is an indication that one is spending money wisely. Subsidizing the Saints or any other entity with taxpayer dollars should ONLY happen if it brings back more dollars (or an overall financial benefit - which is harder to measure) than it costs. That should be the ONLY consideration of "when" government should subsidize a private entity, not whether the district is held by a member of one party or the other. I realize you think only ill of the GOP and also (by the things you post here) feel anyone with a "D" behind their name walks on water; however it is "issues" and "principles" that should guide government's decisions, not partisan politics or political payback.

Jeff's opposition to the TPC seems to be based more on its location than principle. As Jeff points out, it's located in State Senator John Alario's District. Alario, a prominent Senate Democrat survived a strong GOP challenge in 2007. The Senate, under Democratic leadership, has been a thorn in the side of the GOP's attempt to slash the higher education budget. The TPC was first backed by the Foster Administration and continues to have the support of Jindal - at least for now. When Jindal announced the deal to keep the Saints in New Orleans. Jeff wrote a column on this website supporting the deal. Tom Benson contributes to GOP candidates, including Jindal. Will Jeff also oppose further State support for the Hornets because they train at the Alario Center?

While there may be some useful ngo's how does a golf course qualify as deserving of nine million taxpayer dollars? I must be simple minded as I cannot conceive how it meets the "criteria" as deserving of this money.

That's what I like...simple solutions for simple minds: "Let's not fund anyone". There are viable and real ngo partners that the state...not the legislature... calls on in times of trouble but does not fund. Some of these agencies are vital parts of the state's disaster response plan, its plans to store and distribute medical supplies in times of epidemics...the state wants to use them but doesn't pay for them. Those partners do more than many funded govt agencies, and if they're doing the work of the state and serving the people they should have at least some state support to the level at which they are involved and held responsible. I believe neo-cons call that an "unfunded mandate". You stick to monotone ideology while REAL PEOPLE, hardworking people suffer. These aren't bums on the public dole. That's why Jindal set criteria for ngo's to be funded last year. Those that are mandated certain responsibilities by the state should be compensated for their work...or should they work for free??? THAT doesn't sound like a sound conservative principle to me. The issue is more complex than simple rhetorical demagogs would have you think. I hope in the next Katrina-like event that you and your families don't want for food or medicine in crisis. Because if you listen to articles like this, you'll be in the crapper and your kids will likely be sick and/or hungry. If you do, you can thank the neo-con ideologues for it.

Why not? We support the Saints with taxpayer dollars, but don't have enough $ to support higher education and health care.

The taxpayer's shouldn't be funding a golf course or any non-governmental organizations, regardless of how much surplus the government may have, let alone in tough financial times. I heard on the radio that it is projected that 60% of the American public will receive more from the government (the OTHER 40% of the public actually) than they pay in. Don't expect that 60% to desire reigning in the spending spree, they'll be all too willing to see the government spend even more.

Jeff, for once we are on the same page. Thanks for speaking out on this. Cutting education and health care while funding a golf course just doesn't make sense.
