In less than a month, the election for the next mayor of New Orleans will be held.Current Lt. Governor Mitch Landrieu is far and away the front runner, and some are predicting he might win in the first primary.Being the QueenCity of the
South, there is huge interest in the outcome.But even more so in this election;
A Landrieu victory may be the key to picking the next Louisiana Governor.
Most New Orleanians feel the election cannot come soon enough, whoever ends up winning. The current mayor will go down in the annals of the CrescentCity as one of the most dysfunctional public officials in the city’s history. And for New Orleans, that’s really saying a lot. From his “ChocolateCity” comments, to his response of “keeping the brand out there” for the country’s highest murder rate, Ray Nagin has successfully proven the truth of the Peter Principal.Either by design or incompetence, C. Ray just doesn’t get it, and the city has suffered greatly.
Landrieu lost a close race to Nagin four years ago, but seems primed and strongly favored to come back a victor this time around barring any unforeseen circumstances. So assuming he wins, Landrieu would resign as Lt. Governor in early May, and the process to replace him would kick in.The governor picks a replacement, with the legislature’s concurrence, who serves for a matter of months until a special election takes place in the fall.So the Jindal pick would hold office for about five months. If his replacement wants to run for a full term, he or she would have a short jump start to keep the job.
Normally the state’s second spot doesn’t attract that much interest. The Lt. Governor’s duties center around important but perfunctory duties of cutting lots of ribbons and encouraging tourism and the arts. When I held the Secretary of State’s post back in the 1980s, I often joked about the duties of the second in charge.Bobby Freeman held the Lt. Governor’s post, and was chagrinned when I would say:“Here’s what he Lt. Governor does each day.He gets up in the morning, has his coffee, then calls the Governor’s Mansion to see if per chance the governor died the night before. If he didn’t, the Lt. Governor is free to going fishin’ or play bourre’ for the day.”
But the national ambitions of Governor Bobby Jindal have put a whole new slant on the number two job. Just this week, Newsweek Magazine is touting Jindal as a strong possibility for Vice President in 2012.If the democrats continue to slip and the republicans regain the White House, Jindal should at least be a shoo-in for a major cabinet position. And that would mean the Louisiana Lt. Governor would take over the top spot and be primed for two more terms. So the Lt. Governor’s job now becomes all the more attractive to a number of ambitious Louisiana politicos.
A number of republicans are all ready expressing interest to the governor for an appointment, but close observers don’t give Jindal’s potential pick that much credence. The short timeframe gives such a pick too little time to effectively build a base of support, particularly when a number of major present and former statewide officials will give the race a good look. And so far, Jindal’s track record has not been particularly good when he supports a candidate.
On the republican side, two statewide officials are definitely giving the office strong consideration. For them, it’s a “free shot,” for if they would lose, they still hold on to their present positions.Secretary of State Jay Dardenne is weighing the race as well as Treasurer John Kennedy. Both have good reputations and can point to significant improvements in their respective offices. They both would like to be governor, and see the Lt. Governor’s spot as a way to extend their political base.
Both Dardenne and Kennedy have been independent of the Governor, and Kennedy has even been quite aggressive in pushing a separate statewide agenda from Jindal. But you can bet they will be in lock step with the ambitious chief executive if they have a chance move up to the top spot.
So who’s on the democratic side?Let’s see….oh, yes. There is a former two term Lt. Governor who received high marks in the job and used it as a springboard to becoming governor. She presently has a war chest of some $3 million dollars banked to use for a campaign. That’s right!Kathleen Blanco is rested and ready. She is working on a book about her time in public life that should be timed well for a future campaign.
Governor Bobby Jindal was out of state 41 days last year. And as national attention increases for Jindal, his national travel will continue to increase. .When he’s gone, the Lt. Governor is acting Governor. It would be quite a scenario to watch a Jindal-Blanco relationship in action at the state capitol in the years to come.
A spicy race for Lt. Governor will increase interest in an already busy fall elections that are less than nine months away. And the winner will immediately become the favorite to replace Bobby Jindal, whenever he finishes his term or he moves on to bigger and better things. So to see if the first step in this scenario takes off, keep an eye on the New Orleans Mayor’s race just weeks away.

Like the post in another BB article. Send Blanco to Haiti to show her great management skills without interference from George Bush. Once she saves Haiti, that can be her springboard to reelection, right??? Written by

Holy crap, it is a shame when all that is offered up for the voters selection is the lesser of one or another evil.................. Don't know who Coughig is, never met Mitch Landrieu but I can see where the barometer or Guage regarding STRONGCONCRETE is as valid a barometer as any. If the candidate isn't for it, the candidate is not for the common people and wants to see them reduced to serfdom.... Written by

Couhig endorsing Nagin was a mistake in hindsight, and he has admitted it. But it was a mistake that the majority of voters also made, and very few at the time could have imagined what a disaster Nagin would turn out to be.
Couhig remains the only candidate in the race who has the energy and the commitment to undertake the fundamental reforms needed in the city administration. It is going to take a lot of courage to fire a lot of people who have been derelict in their duty to the citizens. Couhig has it. No one can imagine Landrieu, or any of the other candidates, having it.
You may or may not like Coughig. But these are tough times, and a tough guy is needed. Written by andouille

I was just cruizin' around seeing difrn't perspectives and I came across the following from Baltimore: Do you think that any of us posting legitimate concerns about our government can actually make a difference? Wake up, numbnuts. If you have the time to post on here, and yes I am in this group, you obviously are not at the top of the corporate/political ladder. Being at the top of the ladder is what makes the difference, but those in prior generations who have reached the top, have hoisted their direct families & friends to the top, and pulled the ladder up with them. There is no bottom rung for us to step onto, we are all stuck in the pit called modern America. If we do manage to claw our way out of the pit, we come face to face with the bulldozer that trying to push us back in. If we can get control of the wrecking ball, maybe we can at least make the elitist pedestal shake for a minute, before they try to shut us down.
Get organized, make noise, don't back down. We're all f----d anyway, so what's it going to hurt if those of us in the pit pretend to be united for once? - - - - - It seemed like a fairly honest post, and probably right on target...

It is not JUST New Orleans that is in some kind of 'spiral' or 'spin' there andouille, it is Louisiana, it is the United States, it is our policies and approaches that are in a 'spiral' or 'spin', which for the most part is downhill and out of control. It is going to take some serious re-thinking of our patterns of 'productivity' or patterns of 'decline',...... Written by

"Queen City of the South"? I wish it were so: it has not been for a very long time, and Landrieu does not have anywhere the capability needed to make much of a difference. He would of course be better than Nagin. But New Orleans needs a much more forceful, much more dynamic leader to shake things up. NOLA needs Couhig, and the people of NOLA need to quit betting on who will win but start instead to support with their time and money whoever they think could help New Orleans pull out of its death spiral. There is not much time left.
Louisiana needs a healthy New Orleans. Landrieu may or may not have the ability to get elected, but he does not have the ability to revive the city. Written by andouille

You see, this whole Palin / Landrieu / PiBoy spin is just crap out their from the manuverers to 'install' their little 'bot'. Of course Palin doesn't have a snowballs chance in hell, she is merely what she was from the beginning, a distraction... Either for positive, or negative... So folks in fear of getting an idiot queen for prez (as if that were to ever happen, I mean really, how stupid does the GOP Scoobie Doos think the American public is?) might squeal in demand for an anchor baby for President instead(Bobby Jindal, again do the math, seems his old man was boning up on more than just chemestry in the LSU dorm while he was here on a visa.). That's how screwed up the GOP party is. Looking for gimicks, fads, trends, instead of rolling up the shirt sleeves and making postive things happen for the good of the nation as a whole. Piyush is nothing but an 'implant', and marketing at it's best... Do I dislike Piyush? No, never met him all I know is the little cookie munching milk sipping Bobby Brady twerp don't surf, don't water ski, don't snow ski, can't do a wheelie on a dirt bike, never washed dishes for minimum wage, never got screwed out of a paycheck because his paychecks have always been guarnteed by the taxpayer, doesn't understand doing without because his little tummy has never rumbled in hunger. And I also know that he has no problem overlooking advantages and resources that are available for the taxpayer, and that can create real time jobs. My 'animosity' for little Pi-boy is merely clinical, and totally justifiable and understandable even to a special olympics contender. And as far as the Landrieu krewe goes, well, that is just the same old same old antebellum plantation style thinking there. We as a nation are going to face tremendous strains in the upcomming decade. It is time for folks to pull their heads out of their asses and prepare realistic approaches towards solutions for problems we as a whole will be faced with in the near future.... Wutever... Peace Out...... Written by

Did you catch that nice bump in the market today? Only made 2.4% but that is more than your bank pays in a year. Silly sheep... keep up with the politic-o-bot b^llshit. But then again, isn't that what being political is all about. Setting up government policy and installing government drones to rule over the people? Written by
