Obama Visit To New Orleans, Louisiana, Gulf Coast: You Comment

Written by: BayouBuzz Staff

Buzz Right Back----E-Mail a Friend----Print Page

Earlier this week, President Obama announced he would visit the Gulf Coast in October for the first time in his presidency.  He has been criticized for not visiting the coast since taking office and especially during the anniversary of Katrina, last month.  Obama said during his candidacy that he would be putting New Orleans, and the Gulf Coast as a very high priority in his administration.  To date, he has sent a number of cabinet members to Louisiana.

So, what would you like to tell President Obama’s administration if you could?

Comment below.  Bayoubuzz will be forwarding your comments to his press office and to his Office two days prior to his visit.  The purpose of this endeavor is to be constructive and to give the average citizen a voice.

Fact: Corp of Engineers has agreed to include 100 year protection for the new Federalized levees from Oakville to La Reussite (7.7 miles of levee) in a - community preferred plan. The Corp will pay for the accelerated design, but we must lobby for additional funds for the difference too bring the currently funded levee improvements to the 100 year protection. The money for this improvement will have to be funded from outside the Corp (other federal programs, state, and/or local). This would give protection to an additional 4500 people in our community. Please unite with us, the citizens of Belle Chasse, to have the Corp do what is right for all of us. That is 100 year levee protection! Are not 4500 residents worth approximately $50 million? My story is not much different than anyone that has lived here more than a few years. That sense of community and the feeling of safety that our outstanding police dept. provide through the leadership of Sheriff Jiff Hingle make this a wonderful place to live and raise a family. I’m 55 years old and have been blessed to have lived in the Belle Chasse community all my life. I have traveled throughout the country for business and vacations and can honestly say there is no better place to live and raise a family than Belle Chasse area. Belle Chasse has a grocery store and a hardware store, the same one for 3 generations. Wal-Mart and Home Depot have not put them out of business because of the community’s support. I worked with the youth in our community as a Boy Scoutmaster for 10 years and for 17 years with the church youth group. I believe the future of our community lies in our youth. I moved to Jesuit Bend area for a larger lot 25 years ago. I never felt I had moved out of the Belle Chasse Community. About 15 years ago Jesuit Bend area exploded with development because Belle Chasse ran out of available lots upon which to build a home. I, nor anyone that lives below Oakville wants to be excluded from the Belle Chasse Community. Please don’t erect a floodwall (Eastern Tie-in) and divide our community, physically, politically & most important, mentally! I already see it with neighbor against neighbor with the inadequate and confusing information we are getting from the Corp, Federal, State and local officials. People above the floodgate are scared and want the protection now! Does the politicians and the Corp think people who live above the floodgate are more valuable, because they will get better levee protection? No, I think we are just being sold out to get the Eastern Tie-in expedited. Please see if the Gulf Coast Rebuilding can fund 100yr protection for our community. Donald

Military industrialist complex? While not believing all the conclusions of the John Birch Society ("Communist Conspiracy") I do think they have correctly identified who runs this country. It's "Big Money" - big banking, big oil, big manufacturing (what's left) and these people desire to make money globally more so than sustaining a high standard of living here; which explains our overseas investments, troop deployments, bailouts and military actions. In any case, Obama would suffer JFK's fate if he opposed them, assuming he would be so inclinded to do so. I do not know what makes you think he would, as if he made it this far, he is either "one of them" or one of their lackeys. I think your hope and trust in him is misplaced, perhaps I'm wrong. Good luck.

President Obama needs to hear that devoting fifty percent of our national budget to war is not intelligent, especially when we could assist the jobless and the homeless as we have helped the banks and the manufacturers by creating a new WPA or CCC, as Franklin Delano Roosevelt did in the last Great Depression. Without all our wealth going to weapons and military, we could pass the Gulf Coast Civic Works act and begin real reconstruction along the Coast, even restoring wetlands, so New Orleans could continue to exist, instead of sinking into the Gulf of Mexico. Everything to be done about the wars and the military budget, he could do, though he would probably risk assassination like John Kennedy and Martin Luther King for counter-arguing the military-industrial complex. Still, he needs to hear it. I'm doing my damned best to make him hear it.

"Degree" - it matters. Smoke a little - "probably okay." Eat foods high in chlestorol and fat in moderation - "probably okay." Have a debt (accumulated deficits) and the interest one must pay on it of 50 to 500 billion - probably okay. However, too much of anything is probably "not okay." Three packs of cigarettes a day - probably "not okay." Weight of 300+ pounds - probably "not okay." Debt of 9 trillion dollars and plans to double it in 10 years - probably "not okay." Time will make you wish the people demanded it not go too far, but like the doctor telling one they have lung cancer or suffering one's first heart attack, it will be far too late.

Dear Mr. President: I realize the majority of this state did not vote for you , however many people, such as me, did, and I think it very rude that you have not come to our wonderful State . You can then see the devastation in New Orleans, Cameron Parish, the work that need to be done in Port Fourchoun. there are many that stood by for just a hand out, but there were many, many, that only wanted a helping hand to get back up, like in south Louisiana after Gustave . Like in every State there are a few that give the State a bad name, to me, this is the most wonderful place to live, yes, it needs improvement , education , which our Republican Governor seems to be cutting again, health care, which is so sad, they do not want to pass health reform but we seem to be last in the country. Yes, we would need your visit, we are part of America and I know your plate has been full , there are a few good people here who know how to treat people and act civilly . We may be a poor state but we have not lost all our manners and maybe even or governor will act proper and have you to dinner, we do that in the south. I live in Pointe Coupee Parish, Hurricane Gustave was worst on us than Katrina, Rita and Andrew, I still have roof damage my insurance refused to pay and yes FEMA came out here and we got water and "blue tarps" but , mostly neighbors helped neighbors and town people helped the parish workers until they were able to get our electricity back on 12 days later,Brownie was gone by then ,Thank God. But , I digress, do come by, see our State , we are not as bad off as some states , we have just been poor so long we do not know the difference.

~Yes, the President is supposed to be the Commander In Chief. Yet, he appears to be getting all his directions from the Corps of Engineers, hence a Gulf Coast Hurricane Recovery Tour to the New Orleans Disaster Ward Thingy Place... a trip that doesn't include the Gulf Coast or Hurricane Recovery. The Hurricane hit Mississippi and the Corps of Engineers hit New Orleans. We survived the hurricane...Go Figure. Go Fish! Everyone is saying we should be Nice to the President when he comes to town. But, I really think our attitude towards his Yankee Bourgeois Naiveteiness regarding the Flood of New Orleans does not matter, because he and his "people" don't seem to be listening to We The People. While there is no cause for Rudeness, I am just about tired of Obama's Game and think he now owes us more than a few explanations about the Corps of Engineers continued Bad Engineering Scams with New Orleans' Flood Protection --not more full court press partays. Aside from that, I have no direct input to dispense because then this vehicle would only be a charade, and the subsequent semantics involved would only lessen to the the detriment of the knowledge being dispensed. In other words, are you for real, or are you just cranking on a reel? (My God,,,,, I am in superb form tonight. Nothing like doing without for awhile, or nothing like spending awhile with nothing I do believe) Written by Strongconcrete on 10/27/2007> * * * ** * * * * 3 years later, and the games are still going on, long past the twilights last glare (in 2007)....... Hey, when Prez Obama gets to New Orleans, make sure he knows how the New Orleans city council or something or other like that are ' looking into' voting 'theirselves' a raise which amounts to double their current pay.... Sooooo, council members making 40K a year will make 80K a year... Perhaps they should be lined up for a 'firing squad'... That might be a nice place to start. Of course I heard that news on the Walton and Johnston radio talk show, and from person experience with them, although I like their overall 'Patriotism' I have found them to be 'all show, and no go' when it comes down to it, and they do 'bullsh^t' the audiance from time to time... But what the heck, it's their show and they should be allowed to have some fun from time to time...... Anyhows, if the Prez would like to make it possible for Hurricane/Tornado/Fire/resistent homes that look great and would be very comfortable to live in for around $30.00 - $45.00 per square foot to become available for New Orleans, maybe he can get one of his 'staffers' to give me a call and we can sit down and figure it out... And if they want the same on a pylon system 10' - 15' above grade for $60 - $75 per square foot all total, we can work on that too.... And if he wants to save the federal government several billion dollars in offshore/shoreline protection costs we can talk about that too..... And if he wants to save many more billions either on construction costs of offshore/shoreline protection costs, and avoid hundreds of billions in damages costs for the Gulf Coast and the Eastern Seaboard (You know, sort of like the damages that happened to New Orleans, and the other day in Manila over there in the Philipines, I can talk with his 'staffers' about that too.. Doesn't even involve the U.S.A.C.E.. Oh, I guess the Philipines are going to get hit by a super typhoon again in a couple of days..... Man is that going to be a clock cleaner!!!!!! Speaking of waste if the Prez wants to know where the money to fund something like I am talking about is going to come from, hell look at stupid projects like the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources that has been awarded a $6,869,982 federal grant from the Minerals Management Service. The grant, funded through the Coastal Impact Assistance Program (CIAP), will be used for the construction of 14,664 linear feet of artificial reefs to close four breaches along the Terrebonne Basin in the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GIWW). This thing is on the Intracoastal Canal, is going to cost $400.00+ per linear foot, and it doesn't even serve to close a 'breach'.... Artificial reef? No, what it is in all reality is an artificial project that is a waste of money... A 'reef'? No, there is nothing but mud and brackish water at that location... It isn't anything that could be reasonably construed as a 'reef' in the popular sense of the term...... And it closes no 'gap' or breach... The joke is on the taxpayer... This thing sits underwater, it stops or prevents no surge action, no wave action, no nothing..... It must be nice to get 6 million dollar grants for the shi^z and giggles of it..... I am rolling with laughter at the desk after reading about that last grant.... Must be nice to live in a taxpayer funded paradise..... Yeah, them government workers, what a heckuva crew.............

To the Honerable President Barack Obama, enjoy the sights and sounds of New Orleans and Louisiana, then do yourself a favor and get back on Airforce one and go visit Galveston, and of course Cameron, Louisiana..... Those areas are in real need of help.... As for New Orleans, and the rest of Louisiana, it isn't really serious about anything except for another handout, and from what I can see as a result of all the bailout money, etc., etc., etc., that has been flying around in the wind I wouldn't seriously think the U.S. Treasury or the taxpayers around the rest of the United States are really interested in continuing on with the steady stream of wasted dough that washes up around here on our, or because of our shoreline.....

Mr. President, It's the levees. We have unofficial recovery leaders and we have politicians. A few of our politicians are genuine, but most are hot air. The USACE is nothing but hot air. Please seek people who speak truth while here. The USACE will try to impress you while sugar coating their work. Don't let them waste your time. The Corps needs to be directed to go before Congress and ask for more money because for some unknown reason they would rather short-sheet New Orleans, again, than get more money to complete their mandate to provide even the 100 year level of storm surge protection. This is a matter of life and death for 100's of thousands of citizens as well as our strategically important city. To get the truth on our very most important issue, storm surge protection, please meet with genuine recovery giants like Matt McBride, Garret Graves, Ivor Van Heerden, Sandy Rosenthal, HJ Bosworth and Carlton Dufrechou. We knew our city's floodwalls might fail if overtopped, but no one knew they would collapse with over four feet of freeboard. The Corps' sheet-piles were only about 25% the needed length. They are doing it to us again. If you meet people about housing, please include Melanie Ehrlich - no one has done more to try to help families rebuild their homes. Meet Connie Uddo, one of many who managed tens of thousands of visiting volunteers who have done more to help rebuild our city than government. Meet Todd Wallace who developed a process to replace blight with good families. Meet Davida Finger a hard working advocate for all Louisianians trying to recover. If you want the truth about extremely disturbing problems in regard to our local federal justice system, you must meet Aston O'Dwyer. He knows the truth. He is not crazy like they want everyone to believe. For a clear perspective of issues on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, you must meet Doug Handshoe. No one understands the shenanigans, or cares about their people more. The Mississippi Gulf Coast's people have suffered nearly as many social injustices as New Orleanians, but those problems have been even better covered up than here in New Orleans. All of the people I suggest you meet have sacrificed much to try and help our overall recovery. They deserve your attention. They deserve recognition.

Louisiana ranks at the bottom in view of health care for its citizens. Mr. President; I also ask that you consider the impact upon small businesses of the policies of your administration which have not only done harm by reason of the negative economic impact of the continuing accumulation of large amounts of public debt, but also for the persistence of uncertainty over the economic future of our country at a critical moment in our history when we do not see our economy and jobs placed first on the national political agenda. Small businesses are the engine of job creation in our economy Mr. President and they require an economic environment in which capital can be productive, a situation in which we do not find ourselves now. I ask this most respectfully on behalf of small businessmen and businesswomen all over this country who are anxious over our economic future and hesitant to act in ways that will create jobs in light of our continuing uncertainty over the scarcity of resources in the months and years which lie ahead.
