Palin, Jindal, And Louisiana

Written by: Stephen Sabludowsky

Buzz Right Back----E-Mail a Friend----Print Page

While the Republican Governors are meeting this week, many of the cameras and stories are focusing on Sarah Palin, few on Bobby Jindal.

Which raises the obvious question—if the 2012 primaries were held today, would both Bobby Jindal and Palin be running for President for the GOP target?  Both are darlings of the conservative base, both are young and intelligent and both appear to be very personally ambitious.

Obviously, Jindal and Palin are not the only names that will fill the primary bin, if at all.  Palin has not ruled out the run for the position and many pundits including this writer believe Jindal is going through the motions for a Presidential jog.

I have already urged Governor Jindal to focus on rebuilding Louisiana and not worry about his own career so any more discussion about this issue would superfluous.

What is more important right now is for Governor Jindal to use his skills and newfound popularity to help bring home necessary money for infrastructure.

With everyone being bailed out in a horrible economy and with oil prices falling through the floor, Louisiana more than Jindal needs the national publicity to keep our plight on the national stage in front of the worldwide cameras.

We are hearing that unless we bail out the auto industry, there might be a loss of three million jobs this next year.  Obviously, the plight of the industry has been due to its own neglect and other factors such as becoming uncompetitive with foreign auto makers.

Much of New Orleans and Louisiana was damaged due to reasons that were not its own making.  New Orleans flooded due to broken federally-built levees and flood walls under the control of the federal government.  Nothing can stop the wind damage from hurricanes but Louisiana has changed its building code to mitigate further damage.

The ports of Louisiana play an integral role in the flow of commerce.  With the expansion of the Panama Canal, Louisiana can certainly be a bigger player in this international field.

In short, Louisiana needs a voice to remind the world that it is ailing from four hurricanes.  While we have tremendous potential, our schools, our government buildings, our businesses, our other infrastructure have been supremely damaged, directly related to the storms.  Also, we need the wetlands and the entire hurricane protection fortress in place, sooner rather than later.

Our  Governor can play a major role in keeping the plight and the opportunities of Louisiana in the consciousness of Congress and the Obama administration as both receive pressure from other hands pulling money in other directions.

Yes, Louisiana must do what it can do by itself.  I am not asking for a bailout.  I am saying that Louisiana by nature of geography is an important place on the map.  It suffered damage not due to its own fault.  The voice heard by the state urging for federal assistance to compensate us for what we have lost should be that of Governor Jindal’s.     He has the charisma and the heart.  The key question is does he have the "staying power" and focus?  We will see.

Ahhhhh yes, but when the clash of ideas shows that one person is cutting off the publics' nose to spite its own face instead of working with prudent plans and leveraged values that are available, well then, we are talking about a lot more than just personalities, or politics. What we are really talking about is inept and callous mismanagement on the part of installed leadership that very likely diminishes from the publics general good and well being...... In retrospect, could it be that the public suffers one way or another be it in the form of time, money, safety, or a combination of all three so that a Nero can vainly fiddle around while everyone dances to its tune...... In this case though, instead of Rome burning to the ground, it is people getting soaked as well as burned...... One way or another..... So, speaking of ideas, where is the good? One person's personality, or another man's designs?

The "starsearch" comment below has merit. Politics is a clash (or eventually, compromise) of ideas, not personalities.

Mine too..... Information/disinformation is always fun........ Sort of causes some folks to pay attention to what is put down, and maybe even consider what is or isn't a little more carefully sometimes.....

There is hope that Jindal can run for President as long as people don't get wise to what is going on and are allowed to pay attention to posts such as the one below the one that is below this one...

Rather than speak from a platform of hype, image, fad, infatuation, party affiliation/loyalty (I happen to be a registered Republican like that has any bearing on anything anyways) or status quo I would rather delve on the facts as they have been presented…. I have never met Governor Bobby Jindal… Not when he was a Congressman, nor when he was busy campaigning for Governor, nor after he became Governor…. However, I have met with and spoken with various aids of his on a personal level while he was a Congressman and while he assumed the post of being a Governor…… on more than just several occasions…. I am also under the impression that there is a department in a building across the street from the Louisiana State Capitol in Baton Rouge, Louisiana which is commonly referred to as; “The Governor's Office of Coastal Activities”.. Furthermore or at least according to an ‘official’ Louisiana website…….. ‘The Governor's Office of Coastal Activities and the State Wetlands Authority’ were created by Act 6 during the second extra-ordinary session of 1989 for the conservation and restoration of Louisiana's coastal wetlands. The devastating effects of the hurricanes of 2005 prompted the State Legislature to enact Act 8 of the special session, replacing the State Wetlands Authority with the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority and bringing the missions of coastal infrastructure protection and wetlands restoration under the control of one entity for the first time in Louisiana’s history…… And its posted mission statement is; “The Governor's Office of Coastal Activities is to provide leadership and support to the CPRA and to direct and coordinate the development and implementation of policies, plans and programs which encourage multiple uses of the coastal zone and achieve a proper balance between development and conservation, restoration, creation and nourishment of coastal resources.” When I read remarks from a ‘non de plume’ such as ‘Baldwin’ which partially reads; “Heck.. even if he works for Louisiana within 10 percent of his reservoir..” I would suppose that therein lay the problems… 10%????? Really???? And that type of commitment would be considered as satisfactory in as far as the integrity levels necessary for a man who supposedly has ambitions for the Presidency of the United States of America (POTUSOA)?????? Then I read a post from another groupie that claims Jindal to be a Rhodes scholar with huge policy experience in LA and D.C., willing to do the job, and additionally stating; “Jindal is very diligent about moving the state forward and his persona and stature nationally can only help people have more confidence in living or doing business here as opposed to our longstanding reputation.” When I earlier stated; “I would rather delve on the facts as they have been presented….” I meant just that….. The nation is faced with economic conditions that are rather troublesome on many fronts at this point in time, and they are expected to worsen rather than improve in the short term and will probably extend their compounded effects well on into future…… There are offers of aid posted at www.strongconcrete.com for the states of Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, and Alabama which equate out to several hundreds of millions of dollars in cost savings if acted upon…. And, depending upon the motivation levels displayed by the governing authorities not only in Louisiana, but in other states as well, I would consider it to be a reasonable assumption on the readers part that the generosity already extended by Strongconcrete can be increased…. But the facts of the matters are; Governor Jindal, who according to one of his groupies or Grupenfuhrer posters, only needs to ‘spend’ or exert 10% of his time looking out after the affairs of Louisiana and of course the associated money begging from Congress for the coastal restoration/protection thing that is costing the taxpayers 100’s upon 100’s of millions of dollars with more dollars (as in probably billions) necessary even after that has occurred…. Sort of like the GM contemplations going on in Congress right now….. And this is a person that is supposed to be ‘Prime’ Presidential candidate material? He doesn’t even lift a finger to meet with the author of Strongconcrete? How very ‘executive’ of him…. And as for Presidential material? Hardly in my estimation, or any other reasonable person familiar with the basics of accounting principles AND VALUE….. Any voter that wants someone who cares for the safety and lives of the citizenry it is elected to serve, as well as possessing any kind of an understanding of what their tax dollars are worth would be wise to evaluate all the hype, image, fad, infatuation, party affiliation/loyalty ploys that are being presented in the media in an effort to cause this person to become the Commander in Chief (COC) or the President of the United States of America (POTUSOA)… There can only be 1 or possibly a combination of 3 elements that explains why he hasn't met with Strongconcrete.... (1) He has been bought and paid for, or(2) He is naive or ignorant (but he is a Rhodes scholar, so I would discount that notion) (3) He is afraid of going against the status quo that got him elected to office..... Who have their own agendas where the financing of the coastal protection/coastal restoration processes are concerned..... Which of course actually means he is not a leader, he is merely an errand boy on an errant journey..... at the beck and call of others....

Jindal ran for governor so that he would have a platform to run for national office. It's unrealistic to expect him not to run for president in 2012 no matter what he says publicly on the matter. He does has to win re-election as governor in 2011 or he's out of the running.

When Jindal ran for Governor, he made a few votes in Congress. He was one of the most absentee living Congressman. Was Louisiana well served then? If he were to run for President, no matter how bright, he would be absent. Just ask the legislature how he did last year in terms of keeping in touch with them. That is why there was so much confusion. We need a full time Governor. He has yet to prove himself so far and has three years to go. Fix Louisiana--its schools, its hospitals, its roads, its business community. He has not done any of this yet. Not that he won't. But, traveling for two years on the Presidential circuit won't help Louisiana just like Palin has not completed her Road To No Where. Jindal should be on the road to somewhere, here in Louisiana as he promised. Fix Louisiana First.

Now Leon joins the choir. Do you hear yourselves? You sound like so many others out there - "It's all about me." Please take in some reality. These people are just like you and me - they have opportunities and they have obligations. Baldwin was right when he said that Jindal will accomplish more good for this state with 10% of his effort than most past gov's did with everything God gave them. And believe me, he's putting in 100%. Talk about partisan politics! How did this state elect Blanco, a nice woman to be sure but with limited experience and credentials, when a Rhodes scholar with huge policy experience in LA and D.C. was willing to do the job? We're still suffering from that stroke of partisan genius. Jindal is very diligent about moving the state forward and his persona and stature nationally can only help people have more confidence in living or doing business here as opposed to our longstanding reputation (which our legislature fanatically works to maintain every session.) And to say that Chicago hasn't had any problems since the Great Fire is parochial and ignorant. Do you think we're the only people with problems? Frankly, we have worse problems than Katrina. The backwards, corrupt, uneducated portion of our populace will be better off in the long run because of Katrina. Katrina is the heart attack that woke up the inebriated, nicotine-addicted laggard that we used to be. But just keep on criticizing and demanding that Jindal stop everything to take care of you. Take care of yourself.

Steve - I am absolutely positive that you are very capable of multi-tasking. Jindal is also capable of the same - perhaps 1000 times more than you. That is why he is a leader and you are a blogger. Be asssured - he is not going to let Louisiana down - period. He has the right to do anything he wants outside of Louisiana (legally) as long as he does everything for Louisiana to the best of his ability. Heck.. even if he works for Louisiana within 10 percent of his reservoir.. he would have put in more effort over the last 10 governors combined. He is not, will not and cannot let Louisiana down. So just let go of what he is doing outside of Louisiana. You sound like a jealous spouse who had a bitter divorce who still is obsessed with that spouse and can't get over the fact that he/she is going to bed with someone else but is still a billion times commited to taking care of your kids. Get over it already!

Steve is exactly right. We need a fulltime Governor, not a full-time higher office-seeker. Kudos to Jindal for not wanting to be vetted for whatever reason and whenever he did so. But, we vote for a person for a position. Not for a stepping stone. Keep it up, Steve. As far as Chicago, the last calamity I think it had was a fire about 100 years ago. We've had four major hurricanes in three years. Texas also has about three times the amount of representatives. If Jindal wants the job of Governor, great. If he wants to play partisan, Louisiana will lose plenty. It is time he puts Louisiana first, not his own ambitions.

Steve, how many times are you going to gripe about Jindal needing to focus on Louisiana instead of entertaining national aspirations? Get real and give it a rest. Sure we need him here, but c'mon, you can't blame him for capitalizing on a chance to raise his political stock, no matter what he ends up doing. I'll bet there are hundreds of community organizers in Chicago that are still lamenting the day Obama left their group to move up the ladder. Look what he can do for them now! Please, stifle yourself already.

palin vs. jindal. i like palin but jindal is a superior i.q. and candidate for president if the republicans have any chance in the future. the man needs a higher collar on his dress shirt and better clothes less he continue to look like a waif. he needs to work his ass off to serve la. he is talented enough to run la. and run for pres if he chooses great staff to which he can delegate. this man is one smart cookie. if he should become pres. or v.p. just think of what he do for la. take a look at texas since johnson and the bushes were presidents. duh! jindal needs great lobbysists to hammer obama and congress for what la. needs. in the past we had no brains in the la. executive office to even understand this. now we do. its bidness and politics and money. any questions? support jindal with all your heart and soul. he is all we have had for louisiana going back for decades. dg
