US Senate Computer Used For Louisiana David Vitter Talking Points

Written by: BayouBuzz Staff

Buzz Right Back----E-Mail a Friend----Print Page

Some person or persons working in the US Senate has created or copied a list of talking points which
they describe “Key Talking Points” and “Points For Possible Press Release or Letter to the Editor” on
behalf of U.S. Senator David Vitter and has been used for distribution to bolster David Vitter’s position
as he begins to return to the U.S. Senate this week.

The “talking points” revelation comes at a time when some Republicans are coming out in support of the
Senator and have written letters of support for the embattled politician.

The documentation of the talking points is the metatag which is coded in Microsoft Word software.
Because of the metatags, these talking points came directly from the US Senate but it is uncertain who
drafted or copied the content.  Nonetheless, they were likely written or  copied and dissiminated by an
individual with access to Microsoft Word from a Senate computer.

The content of the talking points are evidence of an orchestrated device to create support for Senator
Vitter at a time when he has not made any public appearances since the breaking of the D.C. Madam
story.

The document is further evidence that a US government institution is being used for political purposes
instead of governmental purposes.

The word document did not have the name of the author, nor did it have the identity of the organization
such as the “U.S. Office of David Vitter” which would indicate that it was an official document or
press release from that office.  Also, it did not have a heading or symbol that it was from any
political organization such as the “Friends of David Vitter” or the “National Republican Party”
which would be a political document.

Here is the content of the “Key Talking Points” and “Points for Possible Press Release or Letter
to the Editor”.  The document was sent to Bayoubuzz by a David Vitter supporter with two
attachments of two articles written by a Louisiana columnist which content indicates he used the
talking points since some of the content was verbatim.

Key Talking Points

Senator Vitter did the right thing by telling the truth, taking
responsibility for his actions with God and his family, and apologizing
to us.  He deserves forgiveness.

It's unfortunate that political enemies and the news media have turned
this past mistake/sin - before he was even in the Senate - into a feeding frenzy and a license to report false rumors.

David Vitter is doing good work in the U.S. Senate fighting against
illegal immigration, for access to cheaper prescription drugs and to
help Louisiana recover from the hurricanes.  I'll continue to support
him so he can continue this good work in the U.S. Senate.  We need him in the U.S. Senate to
continue this good work.>

Points for Possible Press Release or Letter to the Editor

Senator Vitter did the right thing by telling the truth, taking
responsibility for his actions with God and his family, and apologizing
to us.  He deserves forgiveness.

These incidents occurred many years ago in David's past - prior to his
work as a U.S. Senator

David Vitter has accomplished a great deal while serving in the Senate
including:
Effectively leading the charge to kill a bad amnesty bill

Fighting for access to cheaper and more affordable prescription drugs

Securing vital highway and infrastructure project funding for the state

Fighting tireless for water resource and hurricane protection

It's unfortunate that political enemies and the news media have turned
this past mistake/sin - before he was even in the Senate - into a
feeding frenzy and a license to report false rumors.

And one other point:  The Canal Street Story is Completely False
The Canal Street Madam is pushing a book and television deal -
effectively using David's situation to further her own financial gain.

All FOUR attorneys on the Madam case say Vitter wasn't involved -
including U.S. Attorney Jim Letten, the madam's own defense attorney and the attorneys for her mother and daughter.

This week, a flurry of emails were also sent to Bayoubuzz from high-ranking public officials from Jason Hebert, the former Executive Director of the Louisiana Republican Party.  The emails by his supporters were hoping that Vitter would heal, and to note that Vitter was an effective government official.  The most detailed and provocative of all of the emails came from Congressman Richard Baker.

Here are his comments:

The dean of the Louisiana congressional delegation, U.S. Rep. Richard Baker, R-Baton Rouge, issued the following statement today in support of Sen. David Vitter (R-La.):

"The past conduct that Sen. Vitter has acknowledged and taken responsibility for is serious and disappointing, but it does not define the whole of the man, and it is not irredeemable.  I extend to him and his family my support and prayers, and I would ask that the media also keep his family in mind and demonstrate some restraint and professionalism in the days ahead.

"Since the initial revelation, the news this week has been filled with lurid and unsubstantiated, and often contradicted, accusations.  I do not know the facts involved, and I understand the public's right to get the facts.  But I sense the media does a disservice to the public and the Vitter family in not abiding by their basic obligation to seek some verification of the truth before running with any allegation that comes along.

"David has been a great Senator.  Just recently he was a hero in the fight to defeat amnesty for illegal immigrants, and nobody has worked harder to help the state since Hurricane Katrina.  I look forward to our future work together on these and other important issues, and I have every expectation that he will continue to serve as a great Senator.

"If a man has values and standards, but does not always live up to them, it does nothing to discredit the validity of those values and standards, and he is far preferable to those timid souls who, without values and standards, cannot fall short of them, nor ever run the risk of being charged with hypocrisy."

Bayoubuzz has not received any documents from any governmental agency such as the U.S. Senate that have even mentioned David Vitter.

Bayoubuzz has received an email from the Louisiana State Democratic Party calling for the resignation of David Vitter.  That document said, “The Louisiana Democratic Party has launched an online petition calling for the resignation of Sen. David Vitter. The petition appears on the Party’s website, www.lademo.org.

The purpose behind the petition is a way to collectively gather names of the many phone calls and email from voters who are intolerant of Vitter’s hypocritical behavior and his irresponsible behavior in the U.S. Senate, according to Louisiana Democratic Party Chairman Chris Whittington.”

To date, the Louisiana Republican Party which often sends of emails in support or against issues, elected officials, and candidates has not released any correspondence in support or against the continuation of David Vitter as the U.S. Senator.  Nor has Roger Villere, the Chairman of the Louisiana Republican Party issued any formal statement although he has been quoted by the Daily Advertiser as saying that “The consensus is they don’t want him to resign,” Villere said after spending hours in phone consultation with Republicans for the past three days.”

From Senator Baker's email: "If a man has values and standards, but does not always live up to them, it does nothing to discredit the validity of those values and standards, and he is far preferable to those timid souls who, without values and standards, cannot fall short of them, nor ever run the risk of being charged with hypocrisy." The falability of that man does not discredit the values and standards, but if he criticizes others who do not necessarily share his values and he himself violates those values periodically it makes him a b-llsh-t two faced bit-h. I don't see why we should prefer that kind of individual to another.

Yep, you dems are on fire with this pettition 850 signatures! sounds to me that the Citizens of Louisiana, and the rest of the country aren't listening to you! (BTW out of those 850 signatures I saw many that wouldn't be counted should it ever get to be serious.) Initals are not a signature, aynonomous isn't either now are two signatures on one line OR nicknames. Yep... 850 NOT INSPIRING AT ALL!

Violation of the Hatch Act. Why do republicans have to pay for it while democrats get it for free? Vitter has a choice, keep the senate balanced due to LIEberman or protect his family. If he does not resign, he is a moral coward, his family should come first. If he really believes in God and talks to him, he should take this message from above that we need to get our kids out of Iraq, save NOLA and mother earth. His resignation will allow these issues to be resolved quickly.

How typical--another lying, pious, hypocritical reactionary christo-facist pleading for understanding (and forgiveness) that he would never extend to anyone outside the ranks of the ongoing criminal conspiracy that he's part of.

Senator Vitter, I have just one thing to say to you: "I'd drive all night, to be with you I like...to wear diapers too"!

"What makes it so plausible to assume that hypocrisy is the vice of vices is that integrity can indeed exist under the cover of all other vices except this one. Only crime and the criminal, it is true, confront us with the perplexity of radical evil; but only the hypocrite is really rotten to the core." - Hannah Arendt

I find the story of David Vitter to be inspirational and uplifting. If only I had the courage like he, to face my sins and overcome them with love and goodness. So he went into a filthy brothel, do not roses bloom from stinking foeces? Unlike that bad man Clinton, David is an evangelical Christian and believes in the sanctity of religion, war and the free market like the rest of us pious and patriotic americans. Long live our CEOs!

Let's stop talking about the hooker diaper thing when the right wing nut jobs give up on Bill and Monica. This is worse because prostitution is illegal, consensual sex is not.

Written by shakker on 7/15/2007

Sen. Vitter is dedicated to family values. He plans to star in a new movie about these values in action (that's two words, not one) starring Deborah Palfrey and David Vitter as themselves. It's working (girl) title is "Louisiana Purchase."

Written by Colon Powwow on 7/15/2007

It's always Vitter's word against the Madam. Remember, without the blue dress no one would have believed Monica. Just because his name was not on a list does not mean the NO story is untrue. I want to hear Vitter explain himself more. This story may not be over. Hookers may talk, have pictures, maybe even saved a dirty diaper with DNA. Vitter better tell all before they do. His I have sinned little speech is not enough.

And then only a hellbound hypocritical member of Congress; I wonder what his needle's eye, camel quotient is NOW? Heaven forbid!

Written by Victor on 7/15/2007

Kelly, do you remember the stink the Dems raised when they found out that the Republicans had "read" documents and "talking points" they had left unprotected on their computers? Well, that was as bad as a breach in National Security. People were fired. Apologies were demanded and given by spineless Republicans who should have said, "So what?" Now we are supposed to get all worked up about Senate computers being used to circulate "talking points" on Vitter. Again I find it very suspect that Vitter (one of the 5 who beat the old guard on immigration) is the only one named. I had bet that it would be Republicans listed but only one? Dirty Politics 101.

What has Vitter ever really delivered for La.? He has claimed that the "sanctity of marriage" is the no. 1 most important issue of all when the levees are falling apart and he's been trying to block rebuilding the New Orleans downtown medical district. He also seems to be very skilled at antagonizing a lot of people instead of working with them. His main activity seems to have been moralizing and finger-pointing and now that he's been exposed as a hypocrite one wonders what he can and will actually do with himself. We already know that he hasn't had in him in the past week to be able to make it for several important Senate votes. If he were to follow his own advice he should resign and if he can't be effective at all in the Senate then he should resign anyway.

Written by Richard P. on 7/15/2007

Steve, both you and the Times-Picayune need to draw a tighter distinction between a "relevation," an "accusation" and a "fact." Wendy Cortez is not a revelation. Neither are the diapers. Neither is the Canal Brothel, so far as it concerns Vitter. Those are accusations only at this point and nothing more. (I would not bet the rent money on any of those three stories without more - much more - than what I have read so far in the mainstream press.) I attended a computer class you taught in 1997, so I'm quite confident you have correctly opened the metadata of the Word file. That it was written on a gummit machine I don't find particularly noteworthy. In fact, given the lax security of the Democrats the last time they last took over Judiciary in the Senate, and all that spilled out showing how tightly the likes of Ralph Neas was controlling their judicial confirmation process, I have no doubt a cyber guy like you could find all manner of e-things to ponder in DC. However, talking points isn't the top thousand of my concerns. Finally, the most obvious distinction of all is that Vitter has not lied under oath. Clinton wasn't disbarred for getting an airstart or doing a strange field touch-n-go.

Written by Kelly Haggar on 7/15/2007

David Vitter is doing good work in the U.S. Senate fighting against illegal immigration and helping Louisiana recover from the hurricanes. I'll continue to support him so he can continue his work in the U.S. Senate. Talking notes aside, he has done a much better job than others we have sent to Washington. We need him in there, as we have very little leadership to represent Louisiana (we can't rely on at least two of our Representatives -- Dollar Bill and Jindal-- to represent us)! I really don't care what he does on his "own time," so long as it does not undermine national security, or squander tax dollars that aren't his to do with as he pleases (his salary). I would change my opinion if we found a Jezebel with $90,000 in marked bills wrapped up in his freezer.

Written by Maxwell on 7/15/2007

Geeze. If anyone thinks that "talking points" are not common occurances on both sides of the aisle, they are ignorant of the workings in DC. I hope that Livingston was able to convince Vitter to stay. I hope Vitter's wife does a "Hillary" and "stands by her man". Even if she doesn't, why would that make him ineligible for office. Kennedy divorced his wife and remarried. Divorce today (even Catholic ugly ones) are so common today that one should hardly blink). I believe that David Vitter has more positives than negatives. Louisiana has more to lose than gain from his resignation. Some of Louisiana's most beloved politicians are more famous for their womanizing than for their contributions to the State. Get real. This is why so many promising young people do not run for public office. If we hope to keep our Republic, we will have to learn to accept flaws in our lawmakers personal lives. The Democrats are real hypocrits here but what is new about that?

Written by Sharon on 7/15/2007

one other talking point: Senator Vitter did not, as it has been widely claimed, shit on himself upon receiving notice that Larry flynt was on the phone (Mon. night). It is true that Sen. vitter ran out the back door, but noone notice any shit stains (possibly because the Senator had his diapers on).
