Even when we've become immune to scandals and crises in sports, the Steve McNair killing made you stop everything on the Fourth of July -- hot dogs, fireworks, beer -- and wonder how in the hell did he get caught up in such a tragedy.

This is one of the most grisly cases of in the all too-too-common drama,
CSI:NFL.

McNair, 36, and his girlfriend, Sahel Kazemi, 20, were both found covered in blood inside McNair's condo in Nashville on Saturday, victims of gunshot wounds. She worked as a waitress at a restaurant visited by McNair, his wife and their four sons. McNair and the girlfriend often hung out at his rented condo and her apartment. Sometimes, she would arrive home in a limousine, and not long ago, her personal vehicle of choice shifted from a Kia to a black 2007 Cadillac Escalade.

McNair had the reputation of being a family man, charity prince, pillar of the Bible Belt community of Nashville since he arrived in 1997, a quarterback who helped stabilize a franchise that had moved from Houston.

Was a lover's quarrel involved in his death? "That's a very important part of the investigation as we work to ultimately classify Miss Kazemi's death," said Don Aaron, Nashville police spokesman.

Police found a semi-automatic pistol under her body and she had one gunshot wound in the side of her head. McNair was shot four times. Was it a double homicide? A murder-suicide?

Kazemi's sister said she couldn't have pulled the trigger. "She was a young girl who had so many dreams that never came true," Sepideh told The Tennessean. "She would never kill anyone, ever. Or anything".

The NashvillePost.com reported that a woman recently accused McNair of giving her a "roofie" a year ago, and that the woman's boyfriend would kill McNair in retaliation. Roofie is a slang term for a fairly infamous date-rape drug.

McNair was recruited by LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Auburn while he was quarterbacking tiny Mount Olive High. They wanted him as a defensive back, but McNair wanted to continue as a quarterback and signed with Alcorn State.

He was considered in the NFL as a tough guy quarterback and black pioneer who rallied the Titans to within a yard of a Super Bowl championship in 2000. He absorbed so many hits with his in-the-pocket fearlessness and running prowess that pain became his regular companion. He was known for his leadership and being able to survive”.  That's why people were stunned by his death. They thought he could live forever.

McNair had a home in Hattiesburg and his son was catching footballs from Brett Favre when Brett was testing his throwing arm weeks ago. McNair and Favre were hunting pals.

McNair shared the NFL's MVP award with Peyton Manning. McNair's NFL career spanned 13 years with Houston, Tennessee and Baltimore,

"Steve McNair was one of the greatest competitors I've ever played against," said Manning. "I'll always remember playing against him.

"Many of our defensive players (Colts) always talked about what a huge challenge it was having to play against him, He and I had some great battles against each other.

"Sharing the NFL MVP honor with him was special because of what a great football player he was. I'm truly going to miss him."

"Steve stayed humble," Cardell Jones, Alcorn State's coach during McNair's career, told the Clarion Ledger. "He never forgot where he came from. He would always come back to do things in the community. He'd visit my wife's day care in Jackson. He'd take time to sign autographs and take pictures with the kids. He could have been doing a lot of other things.

"I was very happy Steve decided to retire because he'd already had a very good career. He'd undergone so many surgeries and so forth. The human body can only take so much.
I wanted him to be able to enjoy life after football."

Mike Weathers, who coached McNair at Mount Olive, got together with his former player last year at a video shoot for NFL Films at McNair's childhood home in Covington County.

"Steve was the same guy," said Weathers. "He never tried to be be above anybody. He always remembered where who he was and where he came from."

A public memorial will be on Thursday for McNair in Mount Zion Baptist Chuck in Whites Creek, Tenn. McNair’s funeral will be held in Hattiesburg most likely on Saturday.

Transparency is believed by only the naive.

SOME HITHER, OTHERS YON: Matt Flynn, former LSU quarterback, won the right to back up starter Aaron Rodgers at Green Bay last season, and Brian Brohm did little to enhance his chances of winning the backup job during the offseason. It appears that Flynn, a seventh-round draft pick, and Brohm, a second-round selection, will get equal reps in training camp until one of them emerges. For Flynn, this offseason was about getting the kind of detailed instruction that he never received at LSU, where he started only one season and where coaching the finer points of quarterbacking amounted to "just drop back and throw," said Flynn. So, when Packers coach Mike McCarthy's quarterback school began in March, Flynn went to work on some of the more technical aspects of the position. "I never really got the individual work on dropbacks and staff like that, so it's been very beneficial to me," said Flynn. "There's a lot of technical stuff at this level." Flynn said. He worked mostly on his footwork and "dropping back faster and staying on balance more." he said the coaches didn't change his throwing motion at all...

UCLA coach Ben Howland on formers Bruins guard Darren Collison getting drafted by the Hornets: "No one in his family was surprised when Byron Scott called them multiple times on draft day am and night.  The Hornets wanted to have  a guy to come in there and play because they have only one point guard. He's a great player. maybe the best point guard in the NBA. Darren is going to be in a great situation in the league, playing for an outstanding coach in Scott and playing behind Chris Paul. I think Darren is going to end up playing a fair amount of minutes each night. They can play (Collison and Paul) together, Darren is going to have a long NBA career. He's playing for a great coach and it's a good system to be in. They're got great players around him -- guys like Peja Stojakovic and David West. Their starting point guard is a great player."...Trivia time: When was the last time Cleveland won a World Series?...

According to ESPN's Ric Bucher, the Phoenix Suns could deal Ben Wallace to the Hornets for Tyson Chandler anytime hey want, but are just checking on all other options before going through with it. GM Jeff Bower has continued to shop around Chandler for some salary cap relief...Seeking headlines during this downhill in July before NFL training camps begin, the rumor-to-start-this-fall United Football League says it would welcome Michael Vick this season. "One of the things important in our premiere season is to showcase the quality of talent and the coaches, and to be able to show outstanding players who find themselves in this quagmire the NFL creates," said UFL commissioner Michael Huyghue. "Michael Vick might be that kind of player he is. . . phenomenal talent, but he needs transitioning back into the NFL."...

Jeff Garcia, 39, plans to play quarterback for the Raiders this season. "Not knocking JaMarcus Russell or anybody else on the team, but I just have a belief in my own abilities," said the quarterback. "That has me feeling I am the best quarterback on the team. That;s just how I approach the game. That attitude prompts Garcia to work hard, and that attitude was brought in to rub off on Russell. If it doesn't, Russell could be bumped to the bench. So either Garcia's example will help Russell or it will help Garcia,..Trivia answer: 1948...Gil Brandt, former Cowboys director of player personnel, now with NFL.com, rates LSU's Richard Dickson as the 10th best tight end in collegiate football: "He started games as a freshman and is a very good athlete, but a better receiver than he is a blocker. H-back will be his best position in the NFL."...

Mile Florio of PFT.com wants to know if Sean Payton is sufficiently focused on his job? Writes Florio: "Two recent stories suggest that Payton would like to get into the movie business. Word emerged that he invested (and apparently lost) $144,000 in a Louisiana film company. Previously, he said that he has developed a screenplay based on a kid who controls the outcome of football games from an Xbox. (Wow. that's nearly as far-fetched as a story about time-traveling quarterbacks.)  We admire folks who indulge their creative juices, but we agree with the notion that coaches generally don't have time for this kind of stuff while still coaching. That said, plenty of successful coaches have written books in the offseason, but most of them have someone else doing the heavy lifting -- and nearly every  coach has won (or at least appeared in) a Super Bowl. Still, as Payton approaches what arguably will be the most critical season of his career, more than two years after last taking his team to the playoffs, he's creating a perception that won't work to his benefit if the Saints miss the postseason for a third straight time on his watch."  With a decent kicking game, a better defense and a power runner, the Saints would have made the playoffs last season. He has improved those areas and is favored to win the AFC South this season, according to Las Vegas oddsmakers...

Going to be very difficult for the Saints to win the AFC South since we're in the NFC. Who is your typo-fact-checker????
