Wednesday night:  Louisiana Punch: Scandal, Politics and Funny

Darling friends,
Greeting from the Lands of the Pharoahs!
While crusing the Nile, I am thinking of all the exciting events that are happening in my beloved New Orleans.
I hate to miss the World Cocktail Day Events that include a celebration in New Orleans on May 13 at Café Adelaide at the Loew’s Hotel, with a public reception from 5:30 – 7:30 staged by ten of New Orleans’ finest bars. In case you did not know, The Museum of the American Cocktail (MoTAC) will reopen in New Orleans this June. The new exhibit is housed with the Southern Food & Beverage Museum at the Riverwalk Mall in New Orleans, next to the Convention Center, and steps away from the French Quarter. Museum curator Ted “Dr. Cocktail” Haigh has designed an extraordinary exhibit– two hundred years of cocktail history that includes vintage cocktail shakers, Prohibition-era literature, music, and exciting cocktail memorabilia from the collections of the Museum’s Founders.
“We plan to establish a major tourist attraction and educational institution in New Orleans that will become a valuable resource for professionals in the beverage industry while celebrating a wonderful piece of our American history.”, says Dale DeGroff, founder of the Museum.

THE PRINCE OF FROGTOWN: AN EVENING WITH RICK BRAGG

Tuesday, May 13, 2008 - 7:00 PM
East Bank Regional Library
4747 West Napoleon Ave., Metairie, LA
Free and open to the public; no registration required; admittance
limited to seating capacity

"Bragg crafts flowing sentences that vividly describe the southern Appalachian landscape and ways of life both old and new. . . . His father's story walks the line between humorous and heartbreaking . . . [The Prince of Frogtown], much like his previous two memoirs, is lush with narratives about manhood, fathers and sons, families, and the changing face of the rural South.."
--- Starred review, Publishers Weekly

THE PRINCE OF FROGTOWN
An Evening with Rick Bragg
Moderated by
Jim Davis
Director of the Center for the Book at the State Library of Louisiana

Join us at East Bank Regional Library on Tuesday, May 13, 7:00 PM, as Pulitzer Prize winner Rick Bragg returns for a visit to discuss and read from his latest book, THE PRINCE OF FROGTOWN, the final volume of his beloved American saga that began with All Over but the Shoutin' and continued with Ava's Man.  Serving as moderator will be Jim Davis,
Director of the Center for the Book at the State Library of Louisiana.

In his new book, Rick closes his circle of family stories with an unforgettable tale about fathers and sons inspired by his own relationship with his ten-year-old stepson, delivering a brilliant and moving rumination on the lives of boys and men, a poignant reflection on
what it means to be a father and a son.

A question-and-answer session and book signing will follow. Books will be available for purchase at the event, made possible by and benefiting Friends of Jefferson Public Library, facilitated by Octavia Books of New Orleans. Books for purchase are provided as a convenience; no purchase necessary.

This program is free and open to the public, and registration is not required.

LADIES NIGHT AT PUNCH WEDNESDAY; A MADAM, A TV STAR,
A COUNCILWOMAN AND AN ACTIVIST HEADLINE PANEL;
DON'T MISS THE WILD AND CRAZY FUN!
RESERVE YOUR TICKETS NOW!

Join us on Wednesday night May 14 for a big event, the kickoff to the 7th year of Politics with a Punch.

To better understand the uniqueness of our show and some of the craziness that is regularly displayed on stage, be sure to read a recent column by Chris Rose, one of our all-time favorite panelists.

Politics from the Edge

As usual, the show will take place at the Cricket Club, 2040 St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans, one of the most exquisite facilities in town. For this show, we are also opening the doors early, at 6 p.m. for a Punch Happy Hour and Dinner. The Cricket Club bar will be open and a delicious drink and appetizer menu will be offered for Punch patrons. This social time is also a great way to network, explore business opportunities and possibly find your next client, customer or partner.

As usual, the program will begin at 8 p.m. Post event, the Cricket Club bar will remain open for Punch patrons.

As usual, we are pleased to have an outstanding panel of celebrities:

Dawn Brown, Colorful WWL-TV Meteorologist, witty and charming
Hon. Jackie Clarkson, N.O. Councilwoman-at-Large, political legend
Ken Ferguson, Impersonator, comedian, actor, producer, political satirist
Ronnie Kole,  Renowned pianist, internationally recognized performer
Jeanette Maier, Canal Street Madam, recognized world-wide, personality
Sandy Rosenthal, Founder of Levees.org, forceful civic activist
Mike Strecker, Popular comedian, comedy club veteran, Punch favorite

Punch Lagniappe. As a special treat, Ronnie Kole will tickle the ivories for our enjoyment. Don’t miss one of the most talented pianists in the world give an extraordinary performance.

Here are some of the many topics we will discuss:

Mayor Bernazzani? FBI says no way and sends him packing; with special agent gone, who will fight crime in New Orleans? Hundreds of  cameras were installed on street corners to catch criminals, but one problem, they are not hooked up and don’t work.

D.C. Madam dies under suspicious circumstances; is it suicide or murder? Will her little black book ever be released? Vitter evades censure by Senate ethics committee, but his driver can’t evade running into a stop sign while fleeing reporters.

Hillary is finally at the end of the road; Obama rejects Reverend Wrong; McCain visits New Orleans; Governor Jindal becomes rock star; Jay Leno wants him, the Republican Party wants him and John McCain might want him as Vice President; can we afford to lose the boy genius  of Louisiana politics?

Mandeville Mayor Eddie Price goes on a wild ride on the Causeway; Drinking, driving without headlights, crashes into the toll booth all in the same night! Yet, no sobriety test or ticket. Can you say special treatment?

Legislators play trivial pursuit in Baton Rouge; State symbols, cocktails, and urinal dividers demand attention; Goodbye motorcycle helmets; 400% pay raise for politicians is debated; One bill would ban lap dancers, nudity and strip clubs on Bourbon Street; Heaven forbid, if passed we might as well shut down the French Quarter

Tulane fraternity members play game of chicken with crab boil and get arrested; Hornets play great basketball, but Hugo’s ring of fire shuts down game at New Orleans Arena; LSU gets rid of troublemaker quarterback Ryan Perrilloux after latest mishap.

With so much serious discussion, it is helpful once a month to be able to poke fun at some of the hilarious, insane and unpredictable events which occur in this state.

On Wednesday night Dawn Brown will forecast a hopefully mild hurricane season; Jackie Clarkson will tell us what is really going on in New Orleans; Ken Ferguson will entertain us with his latest impressions; Ronnie Kole will perform his magic on the piano; Jeanette Maier may drop another bombshell for our audience; Sandy Rosenthal will give us her unvarnished views on levee protection and the Corps of Engineers, and Mike Strecker will enlighten us with his zany, one of a kind observations.

In between, we’ll address the controversies and the crazy antics of our local leaders and have plenty of fun in the process.

Since 2002, along with Steve Sabludowsky of Bayoubuzz.com, I have been a part of one political tradition that has grown into quite a success story. Of course I’m referring to Politics with a Punch, which is held monthly on stage before a live audience. It is our own local
version of “Politically Incorrect.” It is a fast-paced, free-wheeling, no-holds barred discussion of what is happening in our city, state and nation.

In our six years of existence, we have featured some of the top political, business, comedic, media and entertainment talent in Louisiana.  I am honored to host Politics with a Punch, an event which has attracted sell-out crowds for the past two years.

We are expecting another exceptional performance on Wednesday night. Special note, the doors open at 6 p.m. for Happy Hour, the event begins at 8 p.m.

The event features a respected political leader working to reform New Orleans; a comedian who is enjoyed by audiences across the area; a legendary musical treasure; a popular meteorologist who keeps audiences watching; a civic leader demanding fairness for New Orleans and challenging the Army Corps of Engineers; and a woman who can steal the spotlight like no one else, It doesn’t get much better than this panel!

Tickets are usually $15.00 per person/$25.00 per couple; however, I am pleased to offer a limited number of VIP discount tickets at the price of $10.00 per person.

If you would like to take advantage of this opportunity, please RSVP by sending me an e-mail reply. You can also purchase tickets in advance on-line at our website:

 RINGSIDE POLITICS WITH A PUNCH

In addition, I need to know the number of people in your party as the tickets will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis.

Thanks again for your support of Politics with a Punch. Without you and other friends, we could not have such successful events each and every month.

Hope to see you Wednesday night!
Jeff Crouere

"Pontchartrain Beach Party"

Harrison Avenue Marketplace Goes Back to the Beach
Wednesday, May 14th 2008 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM

Remember that scary feeling as the Zephyr car started to roll thru the dark tunnel as the ride began, then slowly going over the top of the first hill.......annnnnnnnddddd down!  Remember the fishing booth where you always hooked a wooden fish worth a cheap toy.  Remember the WTIX Farah Fawcett look-alike contest.  Remember your first Polynesian drink with a little umbrella and fruit skewered with a pirate sword in a tall Tiki glass shaped like bamboo.  Remember lying on the sand and actually swimming in Lake Pontchartrain.  Remember the clown face that laughed at the entrance to Pontchartrain Beach

OK, so some of ya'll younger than me may not remember, but many of us still do, so in deference to those middle aged and even more mature, we take a stroll down the Midway at the next Harrison Avenue Marketplace on Wednesday, May 14th for our Pontchartrain Beach Party.

The event begins with a 1950's era band playing the music of Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, and Chuck Berry.  Polynesian food and libations in the spirit of Bali Hai are provided by Chops Bistro and Martini Bar.  St. Dominic School will set-up games along the Memphis Street Arcade.  And Nick's Snowballs and Gelato is back to serve a rainbow of cool, sweet flavors.

The Marketplace continues to attract new artists and food vendors.  Joining us for the first time are the designer jewelry creations of Andonina and Anna Geraci.  Fabulous fabrics are provided by Décor Us..  Unique art comes from NOLA Alphabet.  Creative house wares are displayed by Hatcreek Designs, Moment on Magazine, and Mama Cajun Candles. Beautiful bows for all children and the young at heart are offered by Kaj'n Bows.  And there will be another menu to offer from Arabesque.

So now that you have that tune stuck in your head, "At the beach, at the beach, at Pontchartrain Beach, you'll have fun, you'll have fun, everyday of the week....you'll love the thrilling rides, laugh 'till you split your sides, at....Pontchartrain Beach", bring yourself, ya'mom'n'em, and a date dawlin' to the next Harrison Avenue Marketplace for our Pontchartrain Beach Party.

And pencil in the date of Wednesday, August 13th for our next Harrison Avenue Marketplace as we take a short two-month summer break, then resume by celebrating our one-year anniversary!

The New Orleans Museum of Art has initiated new evening hours one day a week. The Museum is now open every Wednesday from Noon until 8:00 pm. The adjacent Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden will be open  from 10:00 am until 8:00 pm on Wednesdays as well. The Museum and Garden also are open Thursday through Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

The purpose of the extended hours is not only to make the Museum available in the evening for students and those who work during the day but to help to promote the many fine restaurants, both old and  new, in the MidCity area. So after touring the Museum, visitors are encouraged to have dinner at an area restaurant. A list of MidCity participating restaurants will be available at the Museum.

Besides viewing its permanent collections and special exhibitions, NOMA is planning additional activities for visitors on Wednesday nights, including films, music and refreshments.

During the Rodrigue Exhibition, through June 6, admission is $5..00 for Louisiana resident adults and $10 for non-resident adults.  Visitors under 18 years are admitted free courtesy of The Helis Foundation. Museum Members are free at all times.

FOUR HUMOURS announces our newest offbeat show in another offbeat space: Out Comes Butch at the Voodoo Lounge on the edge of the French Quarter. A comedic tour de force, Out Comes Butch is a one-man-show that explores the outer limits of self-awareness and self-(re)creation. Opens Thursday, May 8, immediately after Jazz Fest, and runs 3 weekends in May.

Out Comes Butch is a simple story about a redneck launched on a hilarious journey of self-discovery after his neglected girlfriend leaves him. Determined to become the man he wants to be...sensitive, caring, healthy...Butch moves by inevitable stages through one identity after another: first as a with-it New Age swinger, then as a newly gay man, then a transvestite, then transsexual...and beyond. Butch is certain that each stage is his ultimate destination, his "real self."

FOUR HUMOURS is thrilled to showcase one of its most talented new members: playwright, director, and actor, Frederick Mead. Experienced in the demands of the one-man show (e.g. The Kung Fu Evangelist) Frederick has the vocal and comedic chops to inhabit each of Butch's personae. And Frederick is anxious to tackle the challenges of audience interaction in the intimate space at the Voodoo Lounge.

Directed by Michael Martin, who was last seen with Frederick in Agnes de Garron's production of Mona Rogers in Person. Butch's elaborate, identity-shifting costumes (practically a co-star) are designed by Big Easy Award nominated Veronica Russell, costumer for the LA Living History Project. The production manager is Jennifer Growden, also of FOUR HUMOURS..

Out Comes Butch

Ogden After Hours

David Greely

David Greely's Cajun heritage simmered on the back burner while he was growing up near Baton Rouge. But after years of fiddling in other styles, he woke up to the music and language of his ancestors and was completely consumed. Apprenticed to Dewey Balfa, he received firsthand wisdom in Cajun music that has earned him acclaim as an eloquent Cajun French songwriter, fiddler, singer, and researcher of nearly forgotten tunes, ballads, and stories. Fascinated with Acadian history, he has traveled through France, Acadia, and Louisiana to find all the ancestral homes of his mother’s family, the Thériots. He is also actively involved in community campaigns to preserve the Cajun French language and archival Cajun recordings. In 2004, he received an “Artist Fellowship Award in Folklife” by the Louisiana Division of the Arts

Cripple Creek Theater Co.

 One Flea Spare
 BY Naomi Wallace

Hire  a babysitter  and get trapped with Mr. Snellgrave this weekend as he and his wife ride out the plague in their London estate. But don't expect a lot of natural light as you settle in -- after the servants were killed by disease, all but one of the windows were boarded-up. And to make matters worse, a loud-mouthed and eccentric guard was placed outside to prevent escape.

But just as the Snellgraves may be given a clean bill of health and allowed to leave, a conniving, young girl and a vulgar laborer break in and condemn them to an additional month of imprisonment. As society outside crumbles, the Snellgraves and their new houseguests are thrust into circumstances in which class structure no longer seems to exist. At least not in the way it used to.

Seating is limited, to be sure to get your tickets, face masks, and latex gloves today.
