2008 SATCHMO SUMMERFEST SEMINAR SCHEDULE

All events take place at the Old U.S. Mint - Free and open to the public

11:00 to 12:30 Gary Giddins
Award winning critic Gary Giddins wrote the book on Satchmo, literally.
2008 marks the 20th Anniversary of the Publication of his "Satchmo." Giddens will talk about how the view of Armstrong has changed over the last two decades, and then track Louis's relationship with pioneer vocalist Bing Crosby, who Giddins also wrote the book on,
the 2001 Ralph J. Gleason Award winning "Bing Crosby: A Pocketful of  dreams, The Early Year 1903-1940."   Giddins will sign books after his talk, which will be available on site for purchase.

1:30 to 2:30 Dan Morgenstern

2:30 to 3:30 Michael Cogswell

3:30 to 4:30 Peter Ecklund
A highlight of last years seminars was Peter Ecklund's deconstruction of Armstrong's landmark solo on "Potato Head Blues." Ecklund returns with his trusty computer generated sidekick "Vladimir" to do the same with Louis's mid-30's rendering of "I'm in the Mood for Love," and places aspects of that recording into the context of New Orleans' rich musical history.

4:30 to 5:30 Cinematic Satch: Louis Armstrong on Film with Ricky Riccardi Our film fest continues with Riccardi presenting a batch of rare items from Armstrong's many television appearances, including a 1960 performance from the Bell Telephone Hour.

White Linen Night keeps its cool at the Ogden

The Ogden Museum of Southern Art will unveil a group of exhibitions on White Linen Night that celebrate the beauty and unique spirit of New Orleans and Louisiana. As part of the museum’s 5th anniversary celebrations, opening on Sat. August 2, 2008 will be: “Louisiana: Photographs by Stuart Klipper”; “Southern Masters: Robert Tannen Stardust: Objects, Ideas and Proposals”; Ersy: Hommage to the Society of Ste. Anne; “New Orleans Art Pioneers:
Charles and Ethel Hutson”; and the University of New Orleans 50th Anniversary Celebration featuring “Fundamental Abstraction: Paintings by Tom Young” and the Southeast College Art Association Annual Exhibition. They will be on view at the museum until Sept. 30, 2008. In addition to the openings, the museum will have live music and admission will be free for the
event, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Louisiana: Photographs by Stuart Klipper
Stuart Klipper, a Minnesota-based photographer, is nationally known for his panoramic color photographs of Antarctica. But Klipper has also spent the past 25 years taking photographs of Louisiana and still is, a lure to visit. Nothing escapes his wide lens, and this exhibition is a haunting look at the state¹s landscapes and people.

Southern Masters Series: Robert Tannen “Stardust: Objects, Ideas and Proposals”
A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Robert Tannen decades ago embraced his adopted home of New Orleans, La. social activist. His mixed media work encompasses themes of love, loss,
preservation, environment and change. This exhibition is part of the Ogden’s ongoing Southern Masters series, which showcases the works of artists who have made longstanding contributions to the region.

Ersy: “Hommage to the Society of Ste. Anne”
This sculpture was inspired by the artist¹s experience with the Society’s annual parade, a costumed walking Mardi Gras krewe. The handcrafted sculpture is made of cast bronze and sits atop of a tall mahogany table with a sandblasted Plexiglas surface.

New Orleans Art Pioneers: Charles and Ethel Hutson
Charles Hutson and his daughter Ethel Hutson were at the forefront of the New Orleans’ developing art community in the early 20th century. Centered around the highly influential Woodward Brothers William Art) its burgeoning community fostered the Hutsons’ art interests in painting, sketching and writing. While Charles Hutson is considered a “self-taught” artist, Ethel Hutson¹s creations reflect her training at Newcomb College and an Arts and Craft aesthetic.

Jazz Service and Second line

St. Augustine Church, 10 a.m.
1200 Governor Nichols Street, Treme

Another favorite aspect of the annual tribute to Pop is Sunday's Jazz service at St. Augustine Church in the Treme. The church is the oldest African-American Catholic Church in America and boast a not-often seen pulpit in the round layout. Many of New Orleans' traditional Jazz giants call St. Augustine home, and will be on hand to perform during the service.
Following the service, a second line will bring worshipers and revelers a like back to the Old U.S. Mint for the festival.

Louisiana Alligator Soirée

Junior Culinary Teams from the Bayou State will Cook-Off in a Battle that’s got bite

New Orleans-Louisiana is world famous for its cuisine and top notch chefs who are no stranger to bold flavors and creative cuisine.  While some great chefs are born with talent, many of them come to Louisiana to learn at one of the state’s respected culinary schools.  On August 4, you can watch these rising stars compete using a main ingredient that is also on the rise to fame, Louisiana alligator.

Held at the New Orleans Morial Convention Center, The Second Annual Louisiana Alligator Soirée will feature teams from the culinary programs of Delgado Community College, New Orleans; Louisiana Culinary Institute, Baton Rouge; SOWELA Technical Community College, Lake Charles; Louisiana Technical College, Jefferson Campus; and junior members from the American Culinary Federation, New Orleans Chapter.

Beginning at 10 a.m., these junior culinarians will use several mystery ingredients and lean, delectable alligator meat to prepare creative cuisine that is sure to wow the judges. Giving spectators the play by play of this food affair will be Louisiana’s own Chef John Folse. Folse is a chef, restaurateur and author of eight cookbooks.  Joining Folse on stage will be co-master of ceremonies and 2006 Great American Seafood Cook-Off winner, Chef Justin Timineri of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
