On April 2, Former Mayor Marc Morial sent a letter to Bob Johnson, the President and General manager of the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center protesting the proposed changes in the name of the "Ernest N. Morial Convention Center-New Orleans" to the "New Orleans Morial Convention Center".The letter is being made public. Marc Morial cited the importance of keeping the name as is and the dishonor it would be to the victims of Hurricane Katrina who used the center as a shelter. He also compared the Morial name in New Orleans to other famous family names.
Here is the letter from Marc Morial. Our courtesies and thanks to Vincent Sylvain for permission to use this content. How do you feel about the proposed name change?
Well Alrighty then! You have proven my point, just because a person goes to college it doesn't make that person or mean that person is smart. Bunch of dumazzez sitting around and discussing a dumazz dead issue.. But we got Piyush flying around trying to keep the buzzzz up, so keep the faith.... invite your 'buddies' to Mardi Gras, maybe we will luck out, they will get shitefaced drunk, thrown in jail for drunken disorderly, pay a $500 dollar fine each (that is if their wallet wasn't pickpocketed during the festivities) and New Orleans will be all that much richer for having encounterd them. Ahhhhhm, where is that wonderful Bobby o'Sullivan and his france' when he is needed?????? Written by R you going to college in Montreal by any chance?

I love New Orleans, but reading these comments daily has proven me wrong. I have had very heated arguments with lots of college friends who think that New Orleans is a joke, just a big ole backwoods country town, I'm losing the argument. Written by Alrighty then!

Marc Morial forgets the numerous individuals who made this city great. We must remember them also. In some instances their names were erased from the buildings and structures built in their honor and replaced with the names of others who had no connection whatsoever to New Orleans. Where is the Morrison Memorial, the Schiro Memorial, etc. Forgotten are the true heydays of this city and replaced with the decay of almost half a decade. Enough is enough, Mr. Morial. You have had your ride. I give credit to your father for what he accomplished and others like him. May we continue to see all citizens, regardless of their ancestry, work together and be honored and not honored simply because of their ancestry. Written by RhettsWife

The name "Morial" and corruption are synonymous. Our great city could benefit from removing the name entirely from public buildings. Written by noladude

Dishonoring the Katrina victims who took refuge there?? What a bunch of BS. Those destined to be Katrina victims at the Convention Center were dishonored for years by the various Morial administrations and their cronies. That's one of the reasons that they were helpless victims when Katrina hit. They should name the city morgue after Morial, so that family can take their fare share of credit for the drownings and the murders that continue in NOLA. Written by ralphie

Fact: Because of Herculean efforts by Federal prosecutors, the name Morial is now more synonymous with crime and corruption in New Orleans than anything else.It is time to move on. The name should be changed to "The New Orleans Convention Center". Put a statue of Dutch Morial up in front for the tourists to look at. Written by poboy1

Please don't change the name to just Morial, then we might think of just Marc who pimped out the city and was a big cause of the problems we face today. What an ego this man has, his name was on the garbage cans and he can't stand not being in the limelight. Written by Sid
