NEW ORLEANS – New Orleans Mayor, Ray Nagin commented upon the possibility of a Presidential Debate next year by stating, “"I am excited about the possibility of a Presidential debate in New Orleans and greatly appreciate the leadership that Anne Milling continues to demonstrate in striving to make this a reality. The City has supported these efforts and will continue to do so in the future. A presidential debate would provide yet another opportunity for the nation and world to see the recovery that is occurring in our City and would highlight our continuing needs."
New Orleans was previously rejected by the Commission on Presidential Debates, claiming it was not ready to hold a Presidential debate although it has held major events since Katrina such as the NBA All Star Game, the BCS Championship and Mardi Gras.
The debate might host a forum on September 18 and Governor Bobby Jindal and Mayor Nagin have been collaborating on such an event along with Google and Youtube.
One of the purposes of the debate would be to focus upon New Orleans. However, a new wrinkle could enter the landscape as Bobby Jindal failed to completely denounce his possible acceptance of a nomination for the Vice President position, if asked.
If Jindal does become a McCain running mate, some might not want the Republicans to have that “home field advantage”.
The idea is still in the discussion and negotiation stage.
