In a recent analysis, Time Magazine concluded that New Orleans is a much more dangerous city than Baghdad, Iraq. Such a statistic is mind boggling when one realizes that Iraq is the site of a bloody, ongoing war. Yet, a war has been waged on the streets of New Orleans for several decades.
Over the last few years, the city of New Orleans has earned the horrible title of Murder Capital of the nation. With the events of the past few days, it is clear that the CrescentCity will not be relinquishing the title anytime soon.
Yesterday, a 13-year old boy was shot to death in New Orleans East by a 14-year old boy. Supposedly, the youngster was “shot like a dog” because he would not join a neighborhood gang. A neighbor called the victim a “very polite boy who didn’t mess with nobody.” Sadly, his politeness and refusal to join a gang may have cost him his life.
Before Katrina, New Orleans East was a struggling community with plenty of crime. Today, the crime situation is even worse according to residents who have complained to police on countless occasions. One of the problems is that groups of unsupervised youngsters are skipping school and terrorizing the community. Where are the police officials, truant officers and political leaders in dealing with this issue?
This tragic incident comes just one day after a respected New Orleans pastor and his wife were killed in their home. Allegedly, the killing was related to an ongoing criminal investigation and was a clear case of witness intimidation. One of the pastor’s grandchildren is supposed to testify against a criminal suspect.
For too long, witnesses in New Orleans have not been protected and criminals have been able to remain out of jail because of outright intimidation. The new District Attorney must improve the witness protection program and do something to increase the conviction rate for felony crimes. A recent report by the Metropolitan Crime Commission showed that the conviction rate for violent crimes is too low. In 2007, only 13% of those charged with violent crimes were convicted. The group found that the NOPD spends too much time, energy and resources on petty arrests and not enough manpower on keeping violent criminals off the streets of New Orleans.
Any independent analysis would show that the NOPD is a dysfunctional organization that needs new leadership. Unfortunately, the Chief of Police is hired and fired by the Mayor of New Orleans. Our current Mayor does not have the interest or inclination to make a change in the NOPD. It will take a new Mayor with a new commitment to public safety to turn around the situation in New Orleans. Until then, look for New Orleans to retain the disturbing title of Murder Capital of the nation.
The foremost priority of city leaders should be focused on improving public safety and curbing violent crime. If that was the true goal, a new leader would be installed at the NOPD, all of the crime cameras would be working and there would be a daily focus on this critical issue. Instead, the city is worried about extracting as much revenue as possible from citizens and tourists, implementing new red light cameras, speeding cameras and sending out meter maids in droves throughout the city.
It is a tragic case of misplaced priorities that will not change until a new Mayor takes office.

We are headed to be the city that "Crime loves and has not forgotten". Everybody grab a gun will be the rally cry. President Obama fired the old General and got a new General for his war. He needed "new eyes" in the war with a get tough leader. We need a new Police chief and Attorney General. A person in this town can have a TV conference and announce their intent to kill someone. They can go get the gun, go to a firing range and practice shooting skills. Then go shot someone with TV coverage and what happens? We arrest them for second degree murder and our Public relations Chief of Police does another Kodac moment on the six O clock news. New Orleans deserves better than this. Written by Winger II

I love louisiana and especially New Orleans.Right now I would forbid my college age children from going to New Orleans. It is just too dangerous. I live in Arizona and would visit other communities in La first rather than New Orleans. When the people start staying away, maybe the Mayor and council will listen. Money talks,BS walks. I for one would hate to find out someone I cared for was killed in the crossfire. Legalize drugs and remove the profit motive that drives these killings. I'd rather someone overdose or ruin their life by using drugs than for a loved one to be killed by a stray bullet. If "the government" cannot keep us safe from the criminal activity caused by their "war on drugs," then it's time to admit the war on drugs has failed. Written by kpf

Have any of the sleep overs on neutral grounds by ministers, prayer vigils by ministers, marches by ministers, anti crime summitts, anti crime groups done anything to stop or slow down the murder rate in New Orleans? Those well intentioned people should realize that if you keep doing the same thing and you get the same results that don't work, you should try something different. Let the animals of New Orleans kill and eat each other. Written by Anonymous

Let me remind you of Nagin's earlier comments. He must be thrilled as the city takes on it's chocolate characteristics.
-'YEA THE MURDERS ARE BAD ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY MAKE NATIONAL HEADLINES BUT YOU KNOW WHAT, IT KEEPS THE NEW ORLEANS BRAND OUT THERE SO THE REST OF THE COUNTRY KNOWS WE STILL NEED HELP'
-'CRIME IN NEW ORLEANS IS REALLY OVERBLOWN IF YOU ASK ME JUST KILLERS MURDERING OTHER KILLERS IT'S A BLIP ON THE RADAR SCREEN'

I love the city of New Orleans. It has so much to offer that one simply cannot find elsewhere. Yet I do worry about the safety of my loved ones and myself. I guess nothing will be done as long as the crime doesn't affect the city's ability to take in tourist money. My plans are to retire in two years and move out then, if not sooner. One would think the city and its citizens would like to make New Orleans a nice, safe place to live. Written by kpf
