After a busy, relaxing weekend that included my participation at a standing room crowd at Politics with a Punch, followed by the opening of the magnificent "Treasures of Napoleon" at the Old U.S. Mint, a Dog afternoon at AudubonPark, and the Old Algiers RiverFest, I am ready for my favorite festival: The French Quarter Festival April 11-13. A great lineup of nothing but local musicians is on the schedule, plus great food and other types of fun entertainment. For complete details visit: http://www.fqfi.org/
There are going to be two great events coming up at the New Orleans Creative Center of the Arts (NOCCA) this weekend. If you haven't had the opportunity to renew your NOCCA membership, now's your chance! With a gift of $50 or more, you’ll receive two complimentary passes to “Tommy,” discounted tickets to select on-campus concerts and events, and the satisfaction of knowing that you’re a supporter of Louisiana’s tuition-free arts conservatory for artistically and musically talented high school students. Local Artist Gail Hickman Chosen for 25th Anniversary Art Poster for French Quarter Festivals
*Signing April 11th from 4:00PM to 7:00 PM
New Orleans Crabbag Company 606 Royal St
New Orleans, LA 70130
On April 11th from 4:00Pm to 7:00 PM New Orleans' own Artist, Gail Hickman will be signing her 25th Anniversary Art Poster for the French Quarter Festivals at the New Orleans Crab Bag located in the heart of the Historic French Quarter at 606 Royal St New Orleans, LA (504) 552-2722.
Gail Hickman, a New Orleans native began her artistic talent at an early age. As a child she would often find herself sketching her dolls instead of dressing them. Gail studied the Old Master Technique under the influence of well known artist June Lampe, and considers Mrs. Lampe to be her greatest influence. Her earliest inspiration was to paint the human body, equestrian art and Louisiana realism. Mrs. Hickman has a large body of work that includes a creative contemporary technique using textures and gold leaf. Her pieces are considered soft, sculpturally and seductive which makes her work universally appealing. Her
sculpture like technique adds to the architectural feel.
As a survivor of cancer, she actively participates in cancer research by donating her paintings. Some of her nudes have been featured in two cancer documentaries in the U.S. and one on the B.B.C.
Celebrate with Gail on her new accomplishment at the New Orleans Crabbag Company.

Fleur de Lindy 2008 Friday, April 11—Sunday, April 13, 2008
During the French Quarter Festival weekend, Swing Dancers throughout the Greater New Orleans area will be hosting Lindy Hop dancers from around the United States as well as around the world for three intensive days and nights of swing dancing at the 2008 Fleur de Lindy Exchange. Spending their days at the French Quarter Festival, dancers will continue dancing each night into the early hours of the next day.
Also known as Jitterbug, Jive, Jump, and East Coast Swing , Lindy Hop began in Harlem and is typically danced to Big Band Swing, Jump Blues and early Rock and Roll, Lindy Hop is the original swing dance from the 30's, 40's, and 50's. Revived in the ‘80’s and ‘90’s with the help of original Lindy Hopper Frankie Manning, thriving Lindy Hop communities are found on most college campuses as well as most major cities throughout the world. Characterized by swivels, rhythmic footwork, high energy pace and aerials, Lindy is danced low with bent knees and open arms to musical tempos ranging from very slow to blisteringly fast.

V-Day Announces its 10th Anniversary in New Orleans With Salma Hayek, Oprah Winfrey, Jane Fonda, Jennifer Hudson, Joss Stone and More
V TO THE TENTH to take place at the New Orleans Arena and Louisiana Superdome Friday - Saturday, April 11-12, 2008 featuring Salma Hayek, Oprah Winfrey, Jane Fonda, Jennifer Hudson, Glenn Close, Julia Stiles, Ashley Judd, Marisa Tomei, Calpernia Addams, Rosario Dawson, Kerry Washington, Ellen Degeneres, and Musicians Joss Stone, Common, Eve, Charmaine Neville.
(Vocus) December 5, 2007 -- V-Day, the global movement to end violence against women and girls, will celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2008 with women and men from the U.S. and throughout the world.
Founded by playwright Eve Ensler on February 14, 1998 at the first benefit of her award winning play The Vagina Monologues, the global non profit has raised over $50 million for local anti violence groups with events taking place in over 120 countries to date and thousands more planned during the upcoming anniversary year.
To celebrate the last ten years of ending violence against women and girls and welcome the next ten years, thousands of V-Day activists will stage their annual benefits beginning in January. V-Day’s 2008 season will culminate with V-Day’s mega two-day anniversary celebration in New Orleans Friday - Saturday, April 11-12 at the New Orleans Arena and Louisiana Superdome - V TO THE TENTH. V-Day’s anniversary events are made possible by the generous support of the NoVo Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation. TBWA/Chiat/Day Los Angeles is creating a branding and messaging campaign pro bono for the anniversary.
Each year V-Day increases awareness by focusing on a specific group of women in the world who are resisting violence with courage and vision. In 2008, the spotlight is turned to New Orleans and the Gulf South. The spotlight will highlight the daily ongoing work of women in their communities who have steadfastly kept New Orleans and the Gulf South alive with little to no resources. These women - “Katrina Warriors” - will be honored for their strength and resilience in the face of devastating loss. The spotlight will bring global attention and funds so that women may be safe and empowered in a region whose pulse beats like no other.
“V to the Tenth will celebrate our victories and usher in the next ten years where together we will raise the stakes, go further, go deeper, increase the power and CHANGE THE STORY OF WOMEN. What happened in New Orleans and the Gulf South after the flood and storm represents the challenges that women face worldwide- violence, global warming, racism, lack of healthcare and education, financial insecurity, and the failure of local and national governments. All these are pieces of the story of violence that continues to impact women in the United States and around the world. V to the Tenth is a celebration, it is the call, the decision, the next step,” stated V-Day Founder/Artistic Director Eve Ensler.
Two invitation only fundraisers are in the works - on the West Coast in January and a special NYC celebration on Valentine’s Day, February 14. Throughout February and March, thousands of V-Day benefits are scheduled throughout the U.S. and the world from Shenzhen, China to Stockholm, Sweden from Canberra, Australia to Lagos, Nigeria. To coincide with these events, Ensler will embark on a nationwide 20-city V To The Tenth speaking tour. In February, Random House will release the 10th anniversary edition of The Vagina Monologues and the paperback edition of Ensler’s most recent book, Insecure At Last.
These events will lead up to V TO THE TENTH, the V-Day event of the decade, on April 11 - 12, 2008 at the New Orleans Arena and Louisiana Superdome. On Saturday evening, April 12, V-Day will stage a once in a lifetime event featuring international performances of The Vagina Monologues, musical guests, V-Day activists from across the globe including Kenya, Afghanistan, Iraq, the Philippines, Democratic Republic of Congo and Eastern Europe, men standing up for women and much more. Calpernia Addams, Glenn Close, Rosario Dawson, Ellen DeGeneres, Jane Fonda, Salma Hayek, Jennifer Hudson, Ashley Judd, Julia Stiles, Marisa Tomei, Kerry Washington, Oprah Winfrey, and musicians Common, Eve, Charmaine Neville, and Joss Stone have already signed on.* The evening will open minds and hearts and raise much needed attention and funds for groups working to end violence against women and girls around the world, and in New Orleans and the Gulf South.

The French Quarter Festival is my favorite (I go to as many festivals in south La. as I can, this is the one I enjoy the most). Unfortunately I will be offshore Friday and part of Saturday. If you like dancing Cajun/Zydeco the Old Mint is the place to be. My absence from the first day or two is yet another example of the callous disregard that "Big Oil" has for humanity (da bastids). If I wasn't excessively greedy I'd quit this outfit (bunch of Krauts and Limeys, for the most part). Written by kpf
