 Darlings readers,
Are we ready for Jazz Fest?
I love our city as it gets decked out to welcome our beloved annual Jazz and Heritage Festival.
In addition to all the performers at the Fairground, there are many venues that will be competing for your attention.

On the eve of the first night of the Jazz Fest, Friday April 25, the barnstorming trombone collective Bonerama brings their high-energy rock and funk sound to Chickie Wah Wah.  The group features a four trombone front line that includes former Harry Connick, Jr. band member Mark Mullins, and one of the most slammin’ rhythm sections in the world anchored by sousaphonist Matt Perrine.  Da Truth Brass Band, one of the hottest of the next generation of new brass ensembles to emerge from the wreckage of Hurricane Katrina, opens the show.
Chickie Wah Wah is located at 2828 Canal Street in the heart of Mid City.
The phone number for more information is (504) 304-4714.
The web site is chickiewahwah.com.All shows begin around 10 PM.

The Norwegian Seamen's Church, 1772 Prytania Street, announces the following musical events for April:

Saturday, April 26, 7:30 pm:  Annual "Crawjam" (all the crawfish you can eat). Music provided by the New Orleans Jazz Vipers, with Swedish trombonist Gunhild Carling.

Sunday, April 27, 11 am:  Jazz service with Norwegian jazz band Gronnes Bad og Jazz.

This week, the Garden District Bookshop, 2727 Prytania is presenting some interesting book signings:

TAKE A SPIN AT THE CAROUSEL FOR JAZZY JAMS during the Jazz Fest weeks.
New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival goers never fear --- the music doesn’t stop just because the gates to Jazz Fest close.  The fun continues at the Hotel Monteleone as it presents Jazzy Jam Week.
It’s a tradition in New Orleans to present visitors with “lagniappe,” which means a little something extra.  And starting on Friday, April 25th, music lovers can enjoy the sounds of New Orleans well into the night as they relax in the Carousel Piano Bar & Lounge at the Hotel Monteleone.
One of New Orleans' musical treasures – pianist, vocalist, producer, and songwriter John Autin – will share the stage with a host of musical guests through Jazz Fest.  The Jazzy Jam Week schedule has Autin performing each night at 8:00 PM with his musical guest taking the stage at 10:30 PM.  Guests include:
Friday, April 25th -  Lady BJ
Saturday, April 26th - Wanda Rouzan
Sunday, April 27th  - Jeff Spence
All performances will take place in the Hotel Monteleone’s Carousel Piano Bar

Preservation Hall is proud to present ‘Midnight Preserves,’ an intimate concert series scheduled to take place from April 24 to May 4 during the 2008 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. The series, curated by Preservation Hall creative director Ben Jaffe now in its fourth year, began in 2005. It provides guests the unprecedented opportunity to see critically-acclaimed artists at the venerable music venue which rarely presents music outside the realm of New Orleans jazz. Celebrated two-time Grammy-winner Terence Blanchard, whose CD “A Tale Of God’s Will (A Requiem For Katrina)” was the recipient of this year’s Grammy Award for Best Jazz Ensemble, will serve as the artist in residence for the series.

In the spirit of tradition and innovation, Blanchard will perform as special guest with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band on April 25 and with George Wein and the Preservation Hall All-Stars on April 26. Blanchard will also host a very special concert featuring the students of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz on Wednesday, April 30, from 5-8 p.m. "By connecting the students of the Monk Institute with New Orleans and Preservation Hall, we are perpetuating the New Orleans Jazz tradition," states Blanchard. The concert is open to the public (limited space available).
Mark Samuels, president and founder of New Orleans based Basin Street Records has announced a special concert and CD release party to celebrate the company's 10th Anniversary. The event will take place Saturday, May 3 at Le Chat Noir featuring performances by Basin Street artists Henry Butler and Irvin Mayfield. Show times are 8 and 10:30 p.m. "We have a lot to celebrate," states Samuels. "Not only is it our tenth anniversary, but we are back in full operation and releasing four new CDs in April and May.
