New Orleans Area Events: Punch Week

Written by: MargaritaBergen

Buzz Right Back----E-Mail a Friend----Print Page

Darling friends:

Post your events on our Bayoubuzz calendar and check it daily for updates.  It receives approximately 1000 page views per day.

After spending a wonderful week attending, among other parties, the fabulous Tennessee Williams Literary Festival and the well-attended seminar, "Behind the Velvet Curtain:  Ladies of Burlesque Revealed" with sultry sweethearts of Fleur de Tease at the Cabildo on Jackson Square, and a lovely evening on Monday at Maximo's on Decatur Street  with performances by Kermit Ruffins and the B-B-Q Swingers, I was ready for a break. But, alas, this week is also going to be a very busy, exciting week with lots of fun events.

I am very much looking forward to attending on Wednesday, April 2, the preview party of    NOMA's Art In Bloom. The colorful five-day event, themed "Merci Bien: A Bouquet of Thanks,” will showcase more than 100 exhibitors of creative floral designs, sculpture and scenes. For complete details visit http://www.noma.org/.

That same night is the premiere of the YLC Wednesday at the Square Concert featuring Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk from 5-7:30 p.m. There will be eleven more concerts after this one, ending on June 18. For a complete lineup go to http://www.wednesdayatthesquare.com/ .

Every Wednesday, you can experience an evening of cultural indulgences at the JW Marriott Lobby Lounge featuring works by local artists and a performance this week by Brazilian-born guitarist Riccardo Crespo. 5:30-8 p.m. Complimentary tasting and hors d'oeuvres.

On Thursday, April 3, Ogden After Hours is presenting one of my favorite jazz vocalists, Marva Wright, from 6-8 p.m. in the Lobby Atrium of The Ogden Museum of Southern Art's Stephen Goldring Hall. That same night I will be a panelist at the Sixth Anniversary of “Politics With a Punch” or the live version of “Really New Orleans.”

This Thursday’s production will be a killer.  The cast will be TV anchorman Eric Paulsen, City Councilman Arnie Fielkow, the always funny and provocative local raconteur Ronnie Virgets, Louisiana House Speaker Jim Tucker, comedian Bill Dykes, and yours truly, Margarita Bergen, New Orleans Diva, Realtor and Columnist for Bayoubuzz.com, New Orleans Living Magazine and TravelHost. As always, commentator Jeff Crouere hosts.

You better reserve your spot for this special 6th year anniversary show, for as usual, a sellout is certainly expected.  The show begins at 8:00, but happy hour starts at 6 p.m. at The Cricket Club (the former Eiffel Tower restaurant and Red Room), 2040 St. Charles Avenue. Cost: $15 per person, $25 per couple, and $10 for students. Contact Stephen Sabludowsky at
steve@bayoubuzz.com or jeff@ringsidepolitics.com to reserve your seats.

My darling friend, Pam Fortner, owner of Tropical Isle and a few other great French Quarter bars, is hosting a Pam Fortner's Birthday Party and Fundraiser, April 3, 5-9 p.m. at the Tropical Isle Original, 600 Bourbon Street (at Toulouse). The purpose is to raise money to help rebuild two homes in St. Bernard Parish, by hosting a Late As Usual reunion. Late As Usual has been the house band for Tropical Isle Original for the past 25 years and now all the members will be together for one night. Pam has pulled Al Miller out of retirement, tracked down Scott Welker, John Autin and Papa Grows Funk’s very own, John Gros. All proceeds will be donated to the St. Bernard Parish Project Organization and she will match the total that is raised.

Ogden After Hours

Marva Wright

6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Lobby Atrium of The Ogden Museum of Southern Art's Stephen Goldring Hall

Down in Louisiana, Marva Wright is called the Blues Queen. Fans of her energy-filled performances, both live and recorded, call her a lot of other things, too, like "Marvalous Marva." The "bluesiana" numbers she favors are a strong showcase for her dynamic, gospel-rooted voice. One listen would be enough to convince any newcomer of her strengths, which is surprising in light of the fact that the vocalist was a late bloomer who didn't turn professional until 1987, when she was creeping up on 40. Even then, she only began singing as a way to support her family with a second job. Bourbon Street in the Big Easy led to more than she had dreamed, ultimately landing her gigs in Europe and across the world.

Ogden After Hours is every Thursday, 6 p.m. To 8 p.m., at the museum. Free
to Ogden Museum members; $10 for nonmembers.
