There is nothing sweeter than starting your week with the Saints being victorious. GO SAINTS, GO!
Last week, I started my by attending the elegant United Way's Alexis de Tocqueville Society Gala, that bestowed its prestigious 2009 award to local businesswoman and philanthropist Phyllis Taylor. The exquisite dinner was held at the newly renovated Roosevelt Hotel. The entire St. Augustine Marching 100 band strolled through the ballroom and serenaded Mrs. Taylor to the delight of the guests.
New Orleans Museum of Art's annual Odyssey Ball was spectacular.. I dressed like a princess to fit in with the Walt Disney's “Princess and the Frog” theme. The producer, the artist director and some of the other big brass from the Disney Company were in town to promote the film, which uses the city of New Orleans and the Bayou Country as its backdrop. This is the first time that a Disney animated film has ever used a real live city as its setting, so we are grateful for the publicity that this movie will bring to our beloved New Orleans. Earlier that day we were shown a clip of the film and were given an advance preview of the Disney art exhibit at NOMA. I cannot wait to see the rest of the film, which opens in theaters here on December 11, but I urge you to come and see the exhibition, "Dreams Come True," at NOMA. It will run until March 14, 2010.
The wedding of my friends Cheryl Mintz and Brett Bauman on Saturday is going go down in the social circles as the wedding of the decade in New Orleans. The exquisite Mintz mansion and the beautiful courtyard by the pool, served as the setting for the Cinderella-style wedding with a pumpkin style carriage at the end, which I missed since I need to remove myself from soirees that have flowing champagne, caviar, fresh and b-b-q oyster many food stations. The big band led by Lief Peterson kept everyone dancing. Congratulation Cheryl and Brett Bauman!
I also need to congratulate the WindsorCourtHotel and its Grill Room Restaurant in downtown New Orleans that just received 2010 Four Star Award from Forbes Travel Guide, formerly Mobil Travel Guide. The Windsor Court is the only Louisiana hotel to receive an FTG ranking. The Grill Room is one of only 156 restaurants to receive the prestigious rating and one of only two in Louisiana. According to the FTG, the rating signifies that the hotel and restaurant are “two of the finest establishments in the world, delivering guests an experience beyond their expectations.”
My friend Jacquee Carvin wants to remind about the incredible Bob Edes, Jr. in the Pulitzer and Tony Award-Winning Southern premiere of I am My Own Wife at Southern Repertory Theater in Canal Place. Shows run Thursday-Sunday. Directed by Carl Walker, a co-production of All Kinds Of Theatre and Southern Rep. Go to www.southernrep.com for ticket information.
This is going to be another busy week for me since the most elegant fundraiser of the Hispanic Community - the Azucar Ball is taking place this Saturday at the Intercontinental Hotel, with the theme Cabaret Tropicana. The funds raised will benefit the New Orleans Heritage Foundation It should be a lot of fun.
I am also involved in the other fabulous fundraiser: “Walk In Our Shoes” Wall of Fame Gala.
Early Childhood & Family Learning Foundation (ECFLF) hosts an elegant gala to honor New Orleans natives who have achieved national acclaim and are role models to New Orleans’ children. Proceeds benefit MahaliaJacksonEarlyChildhood & FamilyLearningCenter. The majestic lobby of the First NBC Bank, 201 Baronne Street, will serve as the setting for the fundraiser which will be from 7-10 p.m. Read below for the huge list of honorees.
Prior to Saturday, I will be attending New Orleans Opera Association's production of Romeo et Juliet at the MahaliaJacksonTheatre of the Performing Arts. And, as they do on the third Thursday of November every year, the Whole Foods store at Magazine and Arabella streets and in Metairie will release the latest Beajolois Noveau vintage with a series of soirees commemorating the occasion.
