New Orleans Area Events: Starting June 24

Buzz Right Back----E-Mail a Friend----Print Page

Darling friends,

Put up your events and see what is occuring statewide on the Bayoubuzz calendar.

http://www.bayoubuzz.com/Calendar/Calendar.asp

I hope you had a wonderful week. I took it easy this weekend after running around from one place to another on Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday, I did go to the Seven on Fulton Restaurant where the Obituary Cocktail Society was meeting.  We took advantage of 7-cent Mojitos and the $7 savory appetizers. It was very nice and you should check it out.

After a few of those mojitos we headed to the Bombay Club in the French Quarter.  To my delight, Earl Turner came (with his musical director, Chris Coleman) that night to see Suzaune Yee McKamey and Company. What made it even more special was Chris sitting in -- on Bass -- with Suzaune and her group for a couple of songs, then Earl delighted us with a sample of his awesome voice and cabaret-style performance. What an incredible treat for all of us.

If you haven’t seen Earl’s show at Harrah’s, you need to go; I promise you will enjoy it! This week is his last week – at least until he is able to return again -- and he is going to feature on Friday, our legendary, multi-talented pianist/composer Alan Toussaint at 7 p.m. in Harrah’s Theater. Not to be missed. We need him back permanently, like it was before the hurricane. Maybe a good turnout this week will convince Harrah’s management of that.

I got some great news to share with you. New Orleans was announced as the winner of Yellow Tail Wine’s Search for America’s “Most Sparkling City”.  After a national survey narrowed the list of nominees to 10 locations, Americans were asked to vote online for the most animated, brilliant, lively and vivacious city in the United States. The winner proved to be the home of Mardi Gras, Bourbon Street, and Jazzfest--as well as a rich volume of American history.

But of course, I knew that! And so did you.

Yellow Tail is going to hold a sparkling event in New Orleans on Tuesday, July 1, in Jackson Square, from 11:30 a.m.–2 p.m. (formal award ceremony at 12 noon), where our Councilwoman At-large, Jackie B. Clarkson, plans to accept the inaugural honor.  Travel guide author and expert, Pauline Frommer, along with a Yellow Tail Representative, will be at the Chartres Mall in front of St Louis Cathedral to present the award. You are all invited to the presentation and to sample Yellow Tail's sparkling White and Rose' wine. I know I will be there.

I am looking forward to attending, on Friday, June 28, "Una Fiesta Colombiana" to inaugurate the exhibition "The Baroque World of Fernando Botero" at the New Orleans Museum of Art in City Park. The "fiesta" is going to be featuring cocktails at 7 p.m. followed at 8 p.m. by a buffet dinner featuring Herman Caro's Restaurant West Indies and music by fabulous Rumba Buena. Guests will be able to see the exhibition before it opens to the public on Saturday and will be at the museum until September 21, 2008. Reservations are needed by today at 504-658-4127.

The Baroque World of Fernando Botero is the first major U.S. retrospective of the artist's work in more than 30 years . Recognized as one of the most well-known and commercially successful artists to emerge from Latin America, the Colombian native now has his works exhibited and collected by major museums around the world, including NOMA. In case, you are not familiar with Botero, he is famous for his smooth, inflated/bloated shapes and people. I was very fortunate to see a great exhibit of his colossal sculptures in the middle of the Champs Elysees in Paris, and later at Park Avenue in New York City. The 100 paintings, drawing and sculptures in this exhibition span the length of Botero's career, from paintings executed in 1959 in Colombia, to sculptures executed as late as 2005.
