TAKE A SPIN AT THE CAROUSEL FOR JAZZY JAMS during the Jazz Fest weeks.

New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival goers never fear --- the music doesn’t stop just because the gates to Jazz Fest close.  The fun continues at the Hotel Monteleone as it presents Jazzy Jam Week.

It’s a tradition in New Orleans to present visitors with “lagniappe,” which means a little something extra.  And starting on Friday, April 25th, music lovers can enjoy the sounds of New Orleans well into the night as they relax in the Carousel Piano Bar & Lounge at the Hotel Monteleone.

One of New Orleans' musical treasures – pianist, vocalist, producer, and songwriter John Autin – will perform solo Thursday, April 24th, then share the stage with a host of musical guests through Jazz Fest.  The Jazzy Jam Week schedule has Autin performing each night at 8:00 PM with his musical guest taking the stage at 10:30 PM.  Guests include:

Friday, April 25th -  Lady BJ

Saturday, April 26th - Wanda Rouzan
Sunday, April 27th  - Jeff Spence

All performances will take place in the Hotel Monteleone’s Carousel Piano Bar

Mark your calendars as Twilight in the Garden continues  this Thursday with the beautiful music of talented vocalist Lynn Drury (April 24). Sit back, sip on the ever popular Mint Juleps and enjoy some of New Orleans' finest talent. For more information, call (504) 483-9386 or email garden@nocp.org .

On Thursday April 24, Ogden After Hours presents Henry Grey 6-8 p.m. Lobby Atrium of The Ogden Museum of Southern Art's Stephen Goldring Hall.

More darling friends, Fredy Omar and guitarist Pepe Coloma will be playing this Thursday from 8-11p.m. at the Columns Hotel, 3811 St. Charles Avenue.  Nos vemos!!!!

Preservation Hall is proud to present ‘Midnight Preserves,’ an intimate concert series scheduled to take place from April 24 to May 4 during the 2008 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. The series, curated by Preservation Hall creative director Ben Jaffe now in its fourth year, began in 2005. It provides guests the unprecedented opportunity to see critically-acclaimed artists at the venerable music venue which rarely presents music outside the realm of New Orleans jazz. Celebrated two-time Grammy-winner Terence Blanchard, whose CD “A Tale Of God’s Will (A Requiem For Katrina)” was the recipient of this year’s Grammy Award for Best Jazz Ensemble, will serve as the artist in residence for the series.

In the spirit of tradition and innovation, Blanchard will perform as special guest with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band on April 25 and with George Wein and the Preservation Hall All-Stars on April 26. Blanchard will also host a very special concert featuring the students of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz on Wednesday, April 30, from 5-8 p.m. "By connecting the students of the Monk Institute with New Orleans and Preservation Hall, we are perpetuating the New Orleans Jazz tradition," states Blanchard. The concert is open to the public (limited space available).

Mark Samuels, president and founder of New Orleans based Basin Street Records has announced a special concert and CD release party to celebrate the company's 10th Anniversary. The event will take place Saturday, May 3 at Le Chat Noir featuring performances by Basin Street artists Henry Butler and Irvin Mayfield. Show times are 8 and 10:30 p.m. "We have a lot to celebrate," states Samuels. "Not only is it our tenth anniversary, but we are back in full operation and releasing four new CDs in April and May.

I want to remind everyone that you need to check out the Treasures of Napoléon at the U.S. Old Mint on Esplanade Ave. offers visitors an amazing opportunity to see beyond the myth of Napoléon Bonaparte and gain an understanding of this complex figure as a man. The exhibition includes over 250 extraordinary artifacts that trace this seminal historic figure’s life including: the earliest known letter in his hand; the valise that brought him the signed Louisiana Purchase documents from America; the sword that proclaimed him Emperor in the Coronation Ceremony at Notre Dame; his camp bed from the Battle of Wagram; his personal map of the French Empire (1812); the clothes he wore soon before his death; and in his own hand, the first will he wrote during his final, lonely exile on the desolate island of St. Helena. Perhaps the signature artifact in the exhibition is one of his legendary hats which Napoléon wore during the battle at Essling in 1809. Wearing the brim aligned to his shoulders to distinguish himself from the other officers on the battlefield, Napoleon wore these now iconic hats as he strode across the European continent and into the pages of history.

The exhibition also contains paintings, sketches and sculpture by the greatest artists of the time including: Gros, David, Canova, Gerard, Isabey, Houdon, Percier, Fontaine, Delaroche, Chaudet, Vernet, Mauzaisse, and more. Silver, porcelain, textiles, furniture and jewelry on display come from the finest manufacturers of 1st Empire France.  Among the many featured decorative art pieces is the dramatic 12-foot high Imperial bed of the Emperor’s brother Jérôme Bonaparte, King of Westphalia.

Please also save this date: AUDUBON NATURE INSTITUTE'S 2008 CHASE ZOO-TO-DO. May 2, on the grounds of Audubon Zoo. Once again, the zoo will be splendidly elegant setting for the popular Zoo to Do. It offers a magical, moon-lit setting complete with nationally-recognized entertainment, breathtaking decorations, online and silent auction and Lexus Luxury Vehicle Raffle. The finest cuisine from one hundred local restaurants and libations from thirty-five beverage vendors is a hallmark of Chase Zoo-To-Do. Sponsor and Patron Party: 7:30-8:30 p.m., Gala: 8:30 p.m. to midnight. Attire: Black Tie or White Linen Suit, Headline Entertainment: Morris Day and The Time, Featured Entertainment: The Last Straws, Leah Chase, BRW and VaVaVoom. Ticket price range from $110 to $195. For tickets call (504) 861-6160 or visit http://www.auduboninstitute.org/

Collecting Those April Showers:

Global Green's Monthly Panel Discusses Rain Water Harvesting in New Orleans

WHAT:
Global Green USA, as a part of their monthly panel series, is proud to announce this month's panel topic "Collecting Those April Showers," a discussion on water catchment systems in New Orleans. The panel will explore topics on harvesting rain water and the benefits and considerations when implementing a rain water cistern. Panelists include Joe Evans of FutureProof. Refreshments will be served at this free, public discussion panel.

WHEN:
Wednesday, April 23, 2008
5:30-7:00pm

WHERE:
The Global Green Resource Center
841 Carondelet St.
New Orleans, La. 70131

WHO:
Joe Evans of FutureProof, Sustainable Design Consultancy
Brought to you by Global Green USA

WHY:
April is known for ushering in the rainy season. The old saying "April showers bring May flowers" is especially true for New Orleanians. In dealing with this excessive rain, it is important to think about our water sheds and finding ways to utilize what we normally consider as waste water.  As part of their commitment to rebuilding a greener New Orleans, Global Green is eager to present resource saving solutions and conservation techniques to the New Orleans community.

The New Orleans Museum of Art has initiated new evening hours one day a week. The Museum is now open every Wednesday from Noon until 8:00 pm. The adjacent Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden will be open  from 10:00 am until 8:00 pm on Wednesdays as well. The Museum and Garden also are open Thursday through Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

The purpose of the extended hours is not only to make the Museum available in the evening for students and those who work during the day but to help to promote the many fine restaurants, both old and  new, in the MidCity area. So after touring the Museum, visitors are encouraged to have dinner at an area restaurant. A list of MidCity participating restaurants will be available at the Museum.

Besides viewing its permanent collections and special exhibitions, NOMA is planning additional activities for visitors on Wednesday nights, including films, music and refreshments.

During the Rodrigue Exhibition, through June 6, admission is $5.00 for Louisiana resident adults and $10 for non-resident adults.  Visitors under 18 years are admitted free courtesy of The Helis Foundation. Museum Members are free at all times.

Ogden After Hours

6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Lobby Atrium of The Ogden Museum of Southern Art's Stephen Goldring Hall

Henry Grey

Born in Kenner, Louisiana, Henry Gray was given his first piano lessons by a neighbor, Mrs. White, and though he was forbidden to play the blues at home, by the age of sixteen he was already playing the honky-tonks. Henry joined up with Howlin' Wolf in 1956 and stayed with him for a dozen years, cutting his own records along the way and working sessions with Jimmy Reed, Little Walter, Bo Diddley, Jimmy Rogers, Billy Boy Arnold and other Chess and Vee-Jay artists. Moving back to Louisiana in '68, Henry continued to cut records, as well as doing session work for J. D. Miller.

Now residing near Baton Rouge, he still pounds a mean boogie. His heavy-handed piano antics have recently enhanced albums by Tab Benoit, Clarence Edwards and Lafayette Leake.

Ogden After Hours is every Thursday, 6 p.m. To 8 p.m., at the museum. Free
to Ogden Museum members; $10 for nonmembers.

TAKE A SPIN AT THE CAROUSEL FOR JAZZY JAMS

Revolving Carousel Bar to Host Hot Local Talent for Jazz Fest Week

All performances will take place in the Hotel Monteleone’s Carousel Piano Bar and Lounge, which is immortalized in the writings of Ernest Hemingway among others.  The revolving Carousel Bar is a part of New Orleans history and was voted by Gambit Magazine as the “Best French Quarter Bar.”  The Carousel now also happens to be one of the first “non-smoking” bars in the city!
