New Orleans Ex-Recovery Czar Blakely Keeps Rollin His Mouth

Written by: Stephen Sabludowsky

Buzz Right Back----E-Mail a Friend----Print Page

“Ol' man river,
Dat ol' man river
He mus'know sumpin'
But don't say nuthin',
He jes' keeps rollin'
He keeps on rollin' along.”
….Ol’ Man River sung by  Paul Robeson

Those words sung Paul Robeson now have true meaning.  Ol’ Man ex-New Orleans Recovery Czar”, Ed Blakely’ is now singing a frightening tune that makes

little sense about a city many of us are rollin with the punches.

Unfortunately, possibly the hardest punch has come from the former New Orleans recovery czar Blakely.  Dr. Blakely was was recently interviewed in California on matters of the New Orleans recovery, race, federal response, his reasons for leaving the job and a sundry of other matters.

Obviously, this ol’ man Blakely mus know sumpin but don’t say nuthin.  Instead, he is jes rollin along and we New Orleans citizens are wondering if he will give us specifics about what he really knows rather than just jabbing.

Then, some might say he has said too much.  Way to much.

Some whites in this community are angry that Blakely said, “"Now, the white community, there's blood in the water, and they can recapture the political apparatus and kind of put their foot back on black people's throats,"

What does this ‘ol man Blakely mean?  About whom exactly is he talking?

Is there a race power struggle going on in New Orleans?  Absolutely.  But, it is from both sides of the fence and unless I am totally naive nobody or very few want to put their shoes on anybody’s neck.  Unfortunately, in today’s day and age, whites and blacks generally vote for whom they identify the most.  One day that will change (and hopefully soon), but it doesn’t mean shoes on throats

There is racial anger discord in the community and “racially insensitivity” in the air.   Do I like it? No.  But, I don’t see all these whites wanting to stomp on blacks.

Just saying those words and conjuring those images is making a horrible indictment upon a whole population of whites in this community.  Even worse, Blakely predicted the possibility of race riots unless the next Mayor were clever.

Then, Dat ‘ol man river jes keeps rollin’ along.

Blakely also felt that the City of New Orleans, due to the interface of events of the ol’ river and a hurricane  would mean that New Orleans "isn't likely" to be around 100 years from now.

Blakely is not the only doomsday person who has slammed the Crescent City with those ideas.  Years ago, immediately after Katrina, a mid-west geologist felt that New Orleans was rapidly sinking and would have to be encapsulated by very tall walls to protect it from the outside waters and other elements.

What makes these statements so upsetting arethat they came from Recovery Czar Blakely who kept getting paid although he said “I had other things I wanted to do, and administering a recovery is not one of them."

Worse, with Blakely claiming racism of the worse sort afoot, with likely race riots and the city on a crash course with fate, why bother with a recovery?

Why would any business or family ever consider staking roots in area so unfitting?

Then, maybe this ‘ol man is just rolling his tongue.  For decades there has been much speculation about California falling into the Pacific due to an impending major earth quake.  Have there been quake catastrophes in that area of the country? Of course.  But, for now, the state still stands and the population keeps rollin’ in.

One could say the same would occur in Oakland and that this New Orleans scenario is just Blakely bluster.  Still, his comments certainly don’t help as this city tries to attract federal money and investments.  In fact, it hurts as we do our best to suck it up and try to work hard to help one another survive the worse catastrophe in modern times.

Incidentally, his projection of the future is even more reason for the New Orleans Saints must win the Superbowl, much sooner rather than later.  Over a century has passed and the Saints have not entered the big ring.  With the Saints receivers now making super-catches, with the prospects of Blakely predicted race offenses of the cruelest kind, and the city disappearing from the underneath our feet, perhaps our NFL team best put on their supercharged shoes.  Drew Brees and company only comes around perhaps once in a lifetime.  If Blakely knows sumpin we might never get another chance.

“Ol' man river,
Dat ol' man river
He mus' know sumpin'
But don't say nuthin',

So, just maybe, we jus need to know what the ol’ man river Blakely really knows and not just what He keeps on rollin' along with words that mean little.

William C. Bradshaw, so you wuz an Oakland resident in the 60’s? Well laddy dahddy doo da doo da dahhhhhhh…….. I wuz there too…. Best thing in Oakland was the Day on the Green concerts Bill Graham promoted at the A’s stadium each summer… Yeah I remember the nasty ass militant ‘transplants’ and misfits from other states that trashed our cities in the 60’s….. I know Oakland, Hayward, Watts, Compton, Anaheim, I know lots of places……… 1969 - Sacramento Disorder , the July 17, Shootout between BPP (Black Panther Party) & police, the San Diego Riot on July 13, 1969, San Diego, California ... And of course there were the Watts riots in 1965 where most of the physical damage was confined to white-owned businesses….. And I also remember many fine folks that happened to be black that were stuck in the middle of some of that crap… Stuck in the middle and held virtual hostage by others that chose to blacken their reputations merely by being what they were, a bunch of racist douchbags intent on making everyone and everything around them as ugly and miserable as they were inside…… You William C. Bradshaw are merely a big windbag…. I remember finally being weaned off of Morphine, I had been on it for months and months and months, was starting to go blind from it I used so much of it on a daily basis… I was so strung out, I wasn’t even ‘high’ from it anymore….. Constantly burning up, sweating to death, going into convulsions when I couldn’t get my fix…. Gawd the pain was blinding, not withdrawal pain, physical pain.. I remember coming down, shaking uncontrollably, didn’t know my doses were being cut…. All I knew was the warmth that flowed through my body with the injection, the comforting numbing of the pain that wracked my body… And then, all of a sudden, I felt I was losing my mind and what little control of my body I still had, “Oh God what is happening to me!!” I screamed out in terror in a darkened room all by myself (heavy curtains covering the windows, at the end of a hall, quiet, each day on the verge of simply floating away, simply succumbing, my body couldn’t take it anymore, at the end of my limits, no visitors allowed, it was touch and go for so many months) JAKE!!!!!!!! I screamed…. Into the room he came, I could always count on Jake, he held me tight, I was shaking uncontrollably, he reassured me and rocked me soothingly, letting me know I was going to be alright, that I wasn’t alone, not to be afraid, told me he was going to make sure I would be o.k….. It was Jake that was cutting my doses, he was doing it to make sure I wouldn’t just be another strung out vet booted out the door of the VA when my time came…. Jake was a very smart man, a very capable man, nothing like what others with small minds would want to paint him as on the street. And there were others.. I remember moving to Long Beach a little over a year later… A man named Thurmond… A great man he was… Called him T…. He had a small gym, and he took it upon himself to help me rehabilitate myself… The place wasn’t fancy, for the most part just a basic place, a small hole in the wall on a for all practical purposes nameless street, met lots of interesting people there, even got to hang out with Rosie Greer… Good people hung out there, T died in a automobile wreck one night.. A sad day for humanity even though few noticed his passing… I did… And he never let anyone hold him down either, he had spirit, he had a soul bigger than life… Took a little wreck like me and helped me to help myself to regain my footing in life…. Didn’t just toss me out the window…. He cared, he cared for everyone… And both those men I mentioned were from ‘other places’…. And it is people like that among countless others whom I have had the good fortune of encountering during my lifetime that probably account for the last shred of defiance I have left and the audacity to speak my mind, and to try to do what I can for my fellow man… Yes William C. Bradshaw, you are a sullen little jackass, just like many sullen little jackasses I have encountered in my lifetime that just screw things up for everyone else when you feel like you don’t have enough power or control…… And I doubt it if you did anything significant for Oakland, or NEW ORLEANS which appears to be some kind of new found faith to you…. So sleep well, you are but one amongst countless others that are holding the best back…… And gutless? I would be more than happy to journey to Lakeview so I can bich slap you good and proper like you need to be….. And yeah, there are a bunch of racists hanging around New Orleans that want to try to cause a reemergence of racism, which has been dead for over a decade now… folks are getting smarter, they just don’t know how to stand up, or who to stand up to and properly bich slap the oppressive jackasses that are holding them down…. God Bless America, God Bless Louisiana, and God, please bless me with a mighty bich slapping hand when I get a chance to lay it on the right person or persons….

In other words folks, it has been the start of a very good week.... Got another car to add to my collection [no out of pocket expense, simply got rid of one I already had} AND picked up on 5,000 shares of Ford, AND 3,500 shares of GM.... Really good price, and guess what? When I sell in August, I am going to buy a new Ford OR a new GM..... Now if I can get my dealer order in by February for August delivery I can compound farther with a 35% discount plus major finance options that are extremely favorable.... Sort of leaning towards the 2009 Ford Shelby GT500..... Sweeeeet!!! Gawd I luv Shelby's........................... Written by on 12/15/2008 - - -- And now to fast forward to 2009 - - - Ford opened at $7.35 this morning - on 12/15/08 remember when it was at $2.92 a share at market close in 10/2008? - - - Oh, almost forgot, dump Ford next March, it is going to sink like a led fishing lure.... Gawd I still luv's Shelby's

Starting off, I'm not afraid to use my name --- preferring it to some cute little name or gutless "written by." Having been an Oakland resident (1965-2007), if Blakely was there and did anything significant, it's certainly not obvious now. "Kick me in the balls mister" didn't offer anything worthy of note --- except numerous "causes." There are numerous problems throughout the country and in many cases, people are responsible for their own problems. "Are you poor because you're irresponsible, or are you irresponsible because you're poor?" Some people want to try figuring that one out. New Orleans will get better because it deserves to get better. Unlike President Obama, trying to blame everyone else is counterproductive. William C. Bradshaw (Lakeview Resident, 1953-58).

Sam, not complaining about anything.... Just poking fun at the idiots that actually are buying into this White/Black line of crap that just keeps swishing round and round the toilet bowl like a turd that won't go down... What we are witnessing in effect are Misanthropes... that's why a word such as that exists, so that a condition can be accurately described.. So many of you out there are still stuck in the 30's and the 40's... No wonder things are so screwed up down here... You wouldn't even know a diamond if you held it in your hand, the things you think are precious I just don't understand....................

Hey written by, I think this piece written by Steve is excellent. It brings out a lot of issues and does so in a thematic, sardonic and literary way. Blakely said that whites were putting blacks under their heels. Steve has taken a song with the movie and displayed what it once was like then. While things are not perfect now the conditions of white and blacks were horrible then. Blakely basically put the white-black situation in the most racist and derogatory terms. I applaud Steve for being creative and honest by saying yes, we have problems, but, our problems are not like they were, we have a long way to go but nobody wants any race to be under anybody's feet. There might be some crazies on both sides, but it is not as difficult as it was as depicted by Showboat. Also, if anyone is being a showboat, it is Blakely. We have both whites and blacks to thank for our improvements in race conditions. That is what I am taking from this column. I feel Steve is saying that Blakely is wrong for putting things so wrongfully and in such crass terms especially after representing the city at such a high level. His metaphor of Blakely and Ol'Man River, given the nature of the song is first class. The column makes sense on many levels, is powerful and I say job well done. Honestly, I am not sure what you are complaining about. SamJ

I think this is funny as hell, there is so much truth to Blakely it is impossible to keep from busting out and laughing about it... Jay Leno could probably have a pretty good time with the script, and I am sure David Letterman might have an interesting comment or two to make about it also....

Consider the source. Blakeley was hired by our "chocolate city" racist mayor, who is also responsible for bringing back the welfare needy and crooks. Blakeley is just covering for his buddy after a big expensive meal on the citizens of New Orleans when the mayor and his ugly wife were on a junket to Oz. Blakeley must imagine himself the Wizard of Oz because he feels he save New Orleans and magically did the same for Oakland, although nobody there has ever heard of him and his heroic efforts.

I remember years ago, oil field had went bust, couldn’t find work, I built a camp boat out of huge styrofoam blocks I scavenged.. Scavenged wood from burnt out buildings, got some old windows, and rusty tin, built a little ‘box’ on it to live on, had a nice ‘front deck’. All total my campboat was 16’ wide by 40’ long. Made a 12’ X 24’ Butterfly frame to butterfly shrimp with… Couldn’t afford a hand crank, but I was a good rigger, came up with pullies and rope to get it up and down with… Didn’t have much of a boat, used an old refrigerator on its side to hold ice… Couldn’t afford gas cans so I used an old Rubbermaid garbage can for a fuel tank… Ice was a premium, and I hauled my own water and had a butane tank I used sparingly to cook with on an old stove a friend gave me… Hurricane Juan gave me some trouble but I stuck it out, 30 miles from the nearest person…. I ended up on Mosquito Bayou down at Pt. Au fere Island… It was about 300 or 400 feet wide… Each day I would wait for the tide to drop so I could butterfly…. There was a jackass out there with a big shrimp boat, double butterfly frames…. I was staked out on the side of the bayou, waiting for some shrimp so I could make a living… or at least eat…. The guy would ‘push’ his ‘butterfly frames’ down the bayou hugging the bank I was staked on, and when he got to within 100 feet of my camp he would swing out a little and keep going on past, pushing up and down, up and down up and down the bayou….. Each time making sure any shrimp that may be passing my way on his downward pass were caught up by him, never giving me a chance to catch anything… All this to make sure I would starve to death…. Plenty of Bayou, he had plenty of nice things, a generator, an ice hold, nice boat, diesel power, all that just to make sure I couldn’t get anything….. Yeah, greed, hate, meanness.. Week after week this went on, didn’t matter if I moved, he would move too…. You see, that’s the Louisiana way many times… Make sure someone can be kept down, break them, starve them out, beat them, cripple them….. Yeah Steve, and in the meantime don’t allow anyone to provide jobs or hope or anything, kick their legs out from under them, kick them in the bawlz……… I have seen and experienced a lot in my time here… I honestly wonder why I even bothered to try……. And you think you actually are doing some kind of journalistic work? Wutever..................

Steve, it isn't race, what a lame excuse, it is ignorance, poverty, lack of opportunity, corruption, meanness, and a zillion other social problems that are not so uniquely New Orleans, but still are rather prevalant none the less. So kick me in the balls mister while you throw me some useless plastic beads...
