Is New Orleans population approximately 240,000 or around 300,000 people?
That is the major controversy involving the US Census Bureau and New Orleans city officials after the U.S. Census Bureau who claims the lower number to reflect the current population, post Katrina.City officials claim that the Census population number is too low.
The Mayor of New Orleans, C. Ray Nagin on Thursday will be holding a news conference to discuss the issue on Thursday.
One person who is not persuaded by the lower numbers is New Orleans Councilwoman Cynthia Hedge-Morrell who issued this statement through the Mayor’s office:
"I am surprised and concerned by the population estimates being released by the Census Bureau. Those of us who spend our days in New Orleans know that these estimates are not accurate. It is important that the rest of the world also know that our citizens are coming home and that new people are settling in our neighborhoods.
"As chair of the Budget Committee for the New Orleans City Council, I am concerned about the loss of funds that this low estimate will mean for our city and community organizations. In this time of recovery, we need assurance that we will receive every dollar possible to help rebuild our city and provide the services that our children, seniors and families need and deserve."
The census number is an estimate from the US Census Bureau dating back to July 2007.
But it is good to hear your input, thought you may have come down with the flu or something, but then again, would that be a sterotype I am projecting on you???? Written by

Gentlemen, dears, this is not a laughing matter. We cannot and should not characterize all that lived in the public housing of this city as drug dealers and adddicts. It is time to start uniting to hit the root causes of the problems that gave rise to the drugs and crime in this city. It is time to be serious. Written by RhettsWife

172,472, okay, good. Not a waste of your time in the least; we needed an accurate count. In truth my brother worked as a census counter in 2000, if smoking dope and "guesstimating" the number of people in a project building can be considered "counting." Written by kpf

Well, dears, as we ride around the various areas of New Orleans we wondered where the numbers were coming from. We still wonder? Yes we have seen that it is based on the water meters, the electrical meters, etc. Yet how many people are living in those houses. So many more seem to be in a state of devestation. Nearly three years after and homeowners are not back in the city. However, we see protestors outside of housing projects that are slated for demolition being hauled off by police. We have always discounted the numerical counts coming from city hall. Take a look at the reality that exists nearly three years after Katrina. Take a look at reality. Written by RhettsWife

kpf - now everyone in my office is wondering what I'm laughing about. Thanks!! BTW, I just found out something to add to this story. When the US Census does a survey, a city/parish/state may challenge those numbers. However, that subdivision MUST pay for the recount themselves! So, I'd like to know what kind of money we're talking about here. In other words, the dispute seems to be between 240 and 300. If it were 300, how much MORE money would New Orleans get? And, is that amount of money more than it would cost to recount? I'll bet $10 that no one has done this simple cost/benefit calculation. Heck, I'll bet $20! Written by Professor

They want money, more people mean more money, and therefore the census count is wrong. Come on Professor, how can you find fault in their inescapable logic? Written by kpf

Well, I know on what the US Census Bureau bases its numbers. However, I do not know on what Nagin et al base their numbers. The Councilwoman says that people who live in NO "know" that the number is higher. How the heck do they "know" this?!! Now, if there is some hard proof, then I'm all ears. Written by Professor
