New Orleans Police In DisRiley

Written by: Jeff Crouere

Buzz Right Back----E-Mail a Friend----Print Page

There is something rotten in the New Orleans Police Department. While there are scores of courageous and committed officers who risk their lives every day, there seems to be some serious problems in that department. The problems mostly exist in the leadership of that department, especially Police Chief Warren Riley.

Just look at the recent incidents involving two police officers. One case involved a 35-year veteran, Sgt. Bob Guidry, who wore a powder blue shirt on his final day as a sign for respect for fallen comrades. He was suspended 15 minutes before the end of his career, resulting in a loss of his commission, the loss of his ability to serve as a reserve officer and a negative mark on his sterling record, harming his chances to be employed in the future.

The powder blue shirt is popular among many police officers, but it was retired after Katrina. In the tumultuous aftermath of the hurricane, some police uniforms were stolen and the NOPD changed to a black shirt. Ironically, the black shirt is so uncomfortable and hot and is disliked by so many officers that the blue shirt will be making a comeback soon.

Guidry’s wardrobe decision was not meant to show disrespect toward anyone, but only to honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. After 35 years of loyal service, Guidry should have been allowed to wear whatever he wanted on his final day on the force. So, a man who spends all of these years wearing the uniform of the NOPD, defending the citizens and putting his life on the line and he receives a suspension for wearing the wrong color shirt. It is an outrage!

Incredibly, according to Eric Hessler, the attorney for Sgt. Guidry, the 35 year veteran “never received a call from anyone at the department thanking him for his service.” How sad that someone who gave so much to the department and his city was not thanked, but instead was suspended for wearing a power blue shirt.

While Guidry was treated harshly, Donyell Sanchell was given a light punishment for his unprofessional and dangerous behavior the other day on the Crescent City Connection. Sanchell, a four year NOPD veteran, drove like a maniac across the Crescent City Connection, bumped a bridge officer with his vehicle and then slapped the same officer at the police station. So, Guidry and Sanchell were both suspended but their “offenses.” In reality, these incidents were very different and should have been handled much differently. There are serious problems at the NOPD that need to be addressed and these management issues are preventing the department from dealing with the number one crisis facing the city, a horrendous crime problem.

Ever since Katrina, crime has been out of control. New Orleans has the unenviable distinction of being the murder capital of the nation. For example, last night, two people were killed in New Orleans East. Priorities are wrong at the NOPD. Instead of worrying about a powder blue shirt, Chief Riley should be concerned about this deadly murder rate.

It is past time for new leadership at the NOPD. Chief Riley has proven himself to be incompetent leader of the force, but, not surprisingly, he is supported by another incompetent leader, Mayor Ray Nagin, who appoints the Police Chief. New Orleans will not see an improvement in the NOPD until the city gets an improvement at City Hall. It will not come until the next election in 2010, two long years to wait. New Orleans has to endure two long years of a horrific crime rate and poor leadership. Problems will only intensify when the National Guard leaves the city and the NOPD has to deal with the crime situation on its own.

Several weeks ago, Mayor Nagin offered his solution for the homeless problem; give the street dwellers a one way bus ticket out of town. I have a better idea; let’s give both Warren Riley and Ray Nagin a one way ticket out of town on a bus driven by Donyell Sanchell. For this ride, he can drive 90 mph if he wants, the faster they leave town, the better.

I agree with you Tony, that would have been the way to handle this situation.

Chief Riley says his officer have to obey the rules, but he must pick and choose those that they have to obey. His men in black frequently speed across the CCC in their police cars going to and from home and work. The posted speed limit is 50mph and it does not say that police are excepted. Of course the brdge police do not enforce the law on them since they are fellow policemen. This also goes for the Jefferson Parish Police and the State Police who completely ignore the law when crossing the CCC.

This is a sign of low class. Reprimanding a person on his last day and the press gets a hold of this. Unprofessional. Not a word should have been spoken. The point needed to be made but not by setting an example of a retiree. The next day a letter put out to the entire force in regards to the powder blue shirts setting the standard for all in the future.

For the news media or police department to divert all this time from dealing with SEVERE MISCONDUCT OF NOPD, LIKE BEATING THE SHIT OUT OF PEOPLE AND STEALING THEIR MONEY, rather than whomever wears a different shirt on his last day.

This kind of obvious pettiness is yet another slap in the face of our citizens. We have one cop who showed complete and total disregard for other officers, and then slapping a officer - Chief Warren apologized and slapped in on the wrist, abd then the Mayor says hopefully we can get him the kind of help he needs. He needs to be fired, because this jackass is too arrogant to wear a uniform, we can definitely look forward to seeing him again in the news. We have another officer who wanted to show respect for his fallen offices - he's getting the shaft; and if what I've heard is true, this action was taken against him because he didn't ask to wear a blue shirt ~ how high and mighty is that attitude? I think it's time for a new chief and a new mayor. This is truly an outrage!!!

I have given Riley some credit for improvement in the criminal activity in this city. However, in this case, I must disagree with him. This man made a statement of respect for fallen officers. Recently we read that the unclaimed and unknown bodies of the victims of Katrina are in cold storage awaiting the erection of a monument in the Charity Hospital Graveyard on Canal near City Park. I suggest that all citizens wear black in their memory - homicide by neglect of many people. Those who do not wear black should be discharged from the city. Bury those people Chief Riley, instead of arguing over a poweder blue shirt worn in memory of fallen officers. Give respect to those who went before you and the city should show respect immediately for those who remain unburied. Get the picture - all you dummies who are running the city.
