Last week once again was a busy week. We had a lot of cultural events and festivals that kept us busy and entertained.

 

This week is not going to be very different. Fun activities include Theresa Andersson at the Historic New Orleans Collection Courtyard Series, the Beaujolais Nouveau Festival, the Tales of the Cocktail’s Going Green Tales of the Eco Toddy, the Legacy for a Legend Gala honoring Dr. Norman Francis, The Trey McIntyre Ballet Project , the Azucar Ball honoring Maestro Carlos Miguel Prieto, the North Rampart Festival, and the Po-Boy Festival, in addition to the Prospect I exhibitions and the many other cultural activities going on in our town.

 

Tuesday, November 18 through Tuesday, December 30 will feature Organ & Labyrinth With Albinas Prizgintas at Trinity Episcopal Church and School, 1329 Jackson Ave., at 6 p.m. The program includes some of the greatest music written for the organ and a variety of performed music ranging from Classical Baroque to vintage rock tunes. This program is informal and free and open to the public. Call 522-0276 for details and directions.

 

From Tuesday, November 18 through Sunday, November 23, Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap will be at Lupin Theatre at Tulane University. It will be directed by Antony Sandoval. The November 18-22 performances will be at 8 p.m., and the November 22 and 23 performances at 2 p.m. in the Lupin Theater’s McWilliams Hall #215. Call (504) 865-5106.

 

On Wednesdays from7:30-10 p.m., the University of New Orleans Jazz Studies Program presents Jazz At The Sandbar in the Flambeau Lounge of the University Center on the Lakefront Campus. The featured guest Nov. 19 is Pianist Ellis Marsalis. Call (504) 280-6000.

 

On Thursday, November 20 Beaujolais Nouveau 2008 will be at the Foundry, 333 St. Joseph Street, 7-10 p.m. Charge is $35 per person. The French-American Chamber of Commerce, Louisiana Chapter invites you the worldwide release of the Beaujolais Nouveau and to discover the various Beaujolais Crus! Featuring fabulous wines, signature dishes from New Orleans’ top chefs live music and entertainment, a fabulous door raffle and much more! On Thursday, Ogden After Hours is featuring Michael Hurtt & His Haunted Hearts, in collaboration with Ponderosa Stomp Foundation in the lobby of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, 925 Camp Street, from 6-8 p.m.

 

Thursday, November 20 through Thursday, December 18 will feature Prospect1 Presents Artist Open House at Studio Inferno, 3000 Royal Street. Free and open to the public. 504-94.... Local Bywater artists open their studios for demonstrations and lectures on Thursday nights, starting November 6 and throughout out Prospect1 from 7-11 p.m. The events are free and open to the public. Inferno will host an exhibition of all studio artists as well as site-specific installations located in and around the building.

 

On Thursday, November 20 and Friday, November 21 Beethoven Symphony No. 4 will be presented by the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra at First Baptist Church New Orleans,

5290 Canal Blvd. Music includes Debussy’s La Mer, Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 12 in A major, as well as Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4. Call 504-523-6530 to order tickets.

On Thursday, November 20, Newcomb Art Gallery Exhibition Reception presents “Shirin Neshat: Women without Men” at 55 Newcomb Place, Woldenberg Art Center, Newcomb College/Tulane University.  History Ya Ya, UNO Lecture Series:How Public School Teachers ShapedJazz and the Music of New Orleans- Al Kennedy Thursday, November 20, 2008Louisiana State Museum, Arsenal(enter through the Cabildo)6-8 p.m.The world is fascinated with New Orleans music, and the unsung heroes of New Orleans music are the music teachers and band directors in the city's public schools..  The presentation will include rare photographs dating back to the early 1900's.Lecturer is Dr. Al Kennedy, Department of History, University of New Orleans. The Grande and Secret Order of Obituary Cocktail started as the result of a book by Kerri McCaffety.  Thursday Nov. 20 will be the 10th anniversary of the publication of her book Obituary Cocktail, The Great Saloons of New Orleans.  In thanks to Kerri, Obit will have a special Obituary Cocktail gathering on Thursday, November 20th at The Napoleon House, located at 500 Chartres beginning at 7:00 p.m unitl 8:00 p.m.  Then there will be an Obit on Friday at a new restaurant in the Quarter
Royal House Oyster Bar, 441 Royal Street.Date:  Friday, Nov. 21,as always from 6 to 7 p.m.

 

The Historic New Orleans Collection, 533 Royal Street, in the French Quarter, is continuing the Concerts in the Courtyard Fall Series, November 21 presenting Theresa Andersson with selections from New Orleans Lager & Ale Brewing Company. All events open 5:30–8:00 p.m., rain or shine. In the event of rain, concerts are held indoors. Admission is $10; free for THNOC members. Beverages included. Memberships begin at $35. On Friday, November 21, the O’Donnell Concert Series of Christ Church Cathedral proudly presents the 4th Annual All The Saints, a Festival of Healing, Celebration and Jazz. The festival begins with the All The Saints Jazz concert featuring Irvin Mayfield and The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra at 7 pm at Christ Church Cathedral, 2919 St. Charles Avenue. Doors open at 6 pm. On Friday, November 21, Liberty Bank presents A Gala Concert honoring the 40th Anniversary of Dr. Norman C. Francis featuring Gladys Knight joined by Bill Cosby. Alumni, friends and supporters of Xavier University are lining up to attend the November 21 "Legacy For a Legend"  gala concert honoring Dr. Francis, America's longest serving college president. The Gala takes place at the New Orleans Theater inside the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center Hall H at 8:00 p.m.

 

Friday, November 21 is the CELEBRATION IN THE OAKS Preview Party in City Park, a holiday tradition that you do not want to miss. On November 22 NEW ORLEANS HISPANIC HERITAGE FOUNDATION :AZUCAR BALL

The New Orleans Hispanic Heritage Foundation will host its elegant eighteenth annual fundraiser “The Azúcar Ball”.  This year, the theme of the event will be “Noche de Magia” or “Magical Night”.  It will be a magical night of dancing, fun and the celebration of our Latin heritage. Maestro Carlos Manuel Prieto is the recipient of the Galvez Cup.

This black tie evening will take place in the LaSalle Ballroom at the InterContinental New Orleans, 444 St. Charles Avenue with non-stop music from 8:00 p.m. to 1:00 am by Cesar and Julio y Ce Rumba Buena.  There will a silent auction, the proceeds of which will provide much needed monies for the Foundation’s scholarship fund. On Saturday, November 22 is the 2nd Annual North RampART Festival at Louis Armstrong Park. Presented by The North Rampart Main Street, Inc the event is free. Celebrating New Orleans' Culture through Music, Art & Food. This year, the 2nd Annual North Rampart Festival is taking it to the street…North Rampart Street! It will showcase more than 20 artists and food vendors along the promenade in front of Armstrong Park from 11 a.m.- 4 p.m.

 

On Sunday, November 23 is New Orleans Po-Boy Preservation Festival, 12 noon-6 p.m.

Oak Street at South Carrollton. Hosted by the Oak Street Association, the New Orleans Po-Boy Preservation Festival was founded as a celebration of the storied sandwich and the role it has played in New Orleans' culinary culture. Food will be provided at the Festival by the following: Crescent Pie & Sausage; Drago's Seafood Restaurant; Jacques-Imo's Cafe; Parkway Bakery & Tavern; Saltwater Grill & Seafood Market; Station 8801 and T.J. Gourmet.

Music at the Festival will feature the following: ReBirth Brass Band; Amanda Shaw; The Iguanas; Papa Grows Funk; Walter Wolfman Washington; Dave Batiste & The Gladiators.
