Louisiana Politics, Jindal, Landrieu and Kennedy

Buzz Right Back----E-Mail a Friend----Print Page

With July4th now behind us, the US Senate race starts in earnest and some television ads will start popping up--just prime for Tivo.  Now, the major question is which candidate, Mary Landrieu or John Kennedy can be the most persuasive?

Currently, the incumbent leads slightly with a razor edge margin lead, but, this is only July.

The Louisiana Republican Party and the Louisiana Democratic Party is moving into full throttle for their candidates.

Whereas Barack Obama might be an advantage in other states for the Congressional Democratic candidates, that might not be the case for Landrieu.  Obama is not popular in Louisiana and even with his sudden shifting of policies ( a la McCain), it is doubtful that he will help Mary Landrieu much.  McCain is likely to carry the state and Landrieu does not have her traditional base.

However, where Landrieu is strong is in areas that are not her more likely turf.  Since she has brought home much bacon post-Katrina, she has already received the support of many South Louisiana politicos.  The question is whether the voters will follow many of the South Louisiana  political endorsements.  John Kennedy has railed against “earmarks”, but South Louisiana looks as earmarks--as much needed “Bacon” after a government “fry-down”, post-Katrina.

Kennedy did do very well in the recent SMOR poll with his being only five points behind a sitting US Senator.  He and Landrieu are also considered to be the most popular politician in the state.  That phenomenon will make it difficult for many voters who like both candidates as individuals.

Republicans say that Landrieu becomes more “Bush-like” closer to the election year and of course, Kennedy has the Democratic voting record and “most liberal “ Senate candidate tag from four years ago.  Those credibility issues obviously will be the “soft areas” in the respective campaigns as the election gets hotter during the summer months.

Of course, much depends upon Bobby Jindal and John McCain.  In the event that the current GOP Presidential candidate selects the current Louisiana Governor for his running mate, you will have the Mary Landrieu and Mitch Landrieu scenario in the mix.  Mitch Landrieu would assume the Governor’s position should McCain and Jindal become winning running mates.  Voters might factor that Landrieu “tag-team” into the voting brew should the somewhat remote (McCain-Jindal ticket) selection become a choice, , which would send already existing “crazy Louisiana politics” completely out of our control.   .

Jindal has LIED, and that is That!!! No one can ever resurrect themselves from the flames of having lied and everyone knew and knows it!!! The people of this state must REMEMBER these lies about first of all, the Legislators' Raises, which he finally vetoed, and secondly, he was definitely against doing away with the Stelly Tax Plan, then he "turned around" and favored it, and even claimed it as one of his accomplishments, but, OH, too Late, Jindal, you are on your way for the third and last strike---just one more LIE, which I'm sure you've already done, but it is just that I have no immediated knowledge of it, but there will be more LIES, citizens and voters of this state---JUST YOU WATCH WHAT I SAY!!! Oh, I forgot, the below were just some pointers for Pi and his crew as they further comtemplate their "new - deal" 'ethics reform' packages in quest for higher bond ratings what will be covered by the bank accounts of the citizens in lieu of accountability standards of our public servants.....

Landrieu's voting record may be somewhat conservative by national standards, but it is far from true conservative. Look at the politican BS she has created regarding the Dugas nomination as an example. The biggest problem with Landrieu (and this applies to Mitch, too), is their vested interest in perpetuating the underclass that has always been their ace in the hole on election day. They do not want the base democratic vote to move out of government dependency, because it threatens their politican reign. That democratic conspiracy runs throughout Louisiana politics and it is the single most destructive policy that keeps Louisiana on the bottom. - - As counter-intuitive as it may seem, the Republican party has more to gain from improving the status of our poorest citizens than the Democratic party and the Landrieu's. But the democrats have bribed and bullied these people into thinking that government handouts are their only option, and perpetuated the image of the democratic party as the benevolent master.

Nearly everything has changed in the United States since the Bill of Rights was written and adopted. We still see the original words when we read those first 10 Amendments to the Constitution, yet the meaning is vastly different now..... And no wonder. We've gone from a country of a few million to a few hundred million. The nation's desire to band together was replaced by revulsion of togetherness. We exchanged a birthright of justice for a magic bullet, and replaced the Pioneer Spirit with the Pioneer Stereo...... We're not the people who founded this country and our Bill of Rights should reflect this. As we approach the 21st Century, it's time to bring the wording up to date showing what we are and who we are..... Here is the new bill of rights the politicians will probably be looking at presenting..... It's all just words anyways....... AMENDMENT I.... Congress shall make no law establishing religion, but shall act as if it did; and shall make no laws abridging the freedom of speech, unless such speech can be construed as "commercial speech" or "irresponsible speech" or "offensive speech;" or shall abridge the right of the people to peaceably assemble where and when permitted; or shall abridge the right to petition the government for a redress of grievances, under proper procedures....... It shall be unlawful to cry "Fire!" in a theatre occupied by three or more persons, unless such persons shall belong to a class declared Protected by one or more divisions of Federal, State or Local government, in which case the number of persons shall be one or more.... AMENDMENT II... A well-regulated military force shall be maintained under control of the President, and no political entity within the United States shall maintain a military force beyond Presidential control. The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall be determined by the Congress and the States and the Cities and the Counties and the Towns (and someone named Fred....) AMENDMENT III.... No soldier shall, in time of peace, be quartered in any house without the consent of the owner, unless such house is believed to have been used, or believed may be used, for some purpose contrary to law or public policy..... AMENDMENT IV....... The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects against unreasonable searches and seizures may not be suspended except to protect public welfare. Any place or conveyance shall be subject to search by law enforcement forces of any political entity, and any such places or conveyances, or any property within them, may be confiscated without judicial proceeding if believed to be used in a manner contrary to law..... AMENDMENT V..... Any person may be held to answer for a crime of any kind upon any suspicion whatever; and may be put in jeopardy of life or liberty by the state courts, by the federal judiciary, and while incarcerated; and may be compelled to be a witness against himself by the forced submission of his body or any portion thereof, and by testimony in proceedings excluding actual trial. Private property forfeited under judicial process shall become the exclusive property of the judicial authority and shall be immune from seizure by injured parties....... AMENDMENT VI....... In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to avoid prosecution by exhausting the legal process and its practitioners. Failure to succeed shall result in speedy plea-bargaining resulting in lesser charges. Convicted persons shall be entitled to appeal until sentence is completed. It shall be unlawful to bar or deter an incompetent person from service on a jury..... AMENDMENT VII.... In civil suits, where a contesting party is a person whose private life may interest the public, the right of trial in the Press shall not be abridged...... AMENDMENT VIII....... Sufficient bail may be required to ensure that dangerous persons remain in custody pending trial. There shall be no right of the public to be afforded protection from dangerous persons, and such protection shall be dependent upon incarceration facilities available.......... AMENDMENT IX....... The enumeration in The Constitution of rights shall be construed to deny or discourage others which may from time to time be extended by the branches of Federal, State or Local government, unless such rights shall themselves become enacted by Amendment..... AMENDMENT X.... The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution shall be deemed to be powers residing in persons holding appointment therein through the Civil Service, and may be delegated to the States and local Governments as determined by the public interest. The public interest shall be determined by the Civil Service.

Seniority only helps if your party backs you. Landrieu takes credit for getting Louisiana a better share of the oil revenue from its offshore drilling. That Legislation had to be passed before the Democrats took power in January 2007 because the Democrats did not back that Legislation. It was passed because of Republican backing. I fail to see how electing more Democrats help Louisiana because like it or not at least in the short term, Louisiana's oil is its greatest asset. What happens to that industry if there is a huge tax on that industry? What happens if Maxine Waters is right and the "socialize" the oil industry?

Your analysis of Obama's impact is faulty. Obama being the nominee guarantees Landrieu the heavy African-American voter turnout that might otherwise not be there post-Katrina. Any white voter who votes against Landrieu because of Obama would not have voted for Landrieu anyway. McCain does not help Kennedy in that most Louisiana Republicans voted for someone else in the GOP primary. Jindal is damaged goods now and can't help Kennedy either. Kennedy can't help himself because he ran as a liberal Democrat for the Senate just 4 years ago. Kennedy, the State Treasurer who has been a champion of fiscal responsibility, was conspicuously silent on the legislative pay raise. This implies he was not against it. He is also Karl Rove's candidate and Karl Rove symbolizes all that has gone wrong in Washington these last 7 years.

The lure of seniority is Landrieu's ace plus the fact that she is often indistinguishable from a Repub. Kennedy's switch-a-roo for political gain does not sit well with true political party members in either party. But this begs the question--just how many true party members are there anyway? You sure cannot go by the numbers registered on paper--not in Louisiana anyway.
