The entire Joseph Biden, Democratic Presidential candidate’s quote with the New York Observer was "I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that's a storybook, man."
While possibly trying to pay Obama a compliment, Biden has created just another page in an already storied-past of verbal gaffes.
Which is unfortunate since very few can deny that Joe Biden the Delaware Democrat and former Presidential hopeful is articulate and bright and almost looks like “Mr. Clean” if he would really let his hair down.
The problem is that Biden too often lets his mouth open.
His statement last year that "You cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin' Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I'm not joking." is further evidence that Biden might be biding his time in this Presidential race where he cannot raise the money or get the crowds of Hillary Clinton or first-termer Barack Obama.
Which is really a shame since Biden is serving his sixth term as a U.S. Senator, knows the ropes better than most and has more experience in his attaché then his two major opponents.
He might even be the ultimate compromise candidate as the purpose of the primary is to present a candidate who can beat the Republican candidate and some Americans might consider Clinton to be too “woman” and too “Clinton” and Obama as too “black” or too “Islamic sounding” at the wrong time in history.
Biden might have the best resume, one of the best minds but his mouth is what is torpedoing his campaign.
Obviously, it is all still too early and the Democratic primary has a long way to go. So do many of the other candidates who can catch on despite what appears to be overwhelming odds at this time.
If the past has taught us anything, even a victor in the early primary can squeal himself or herself out of the running. If Biden has any chance to win, he better appear more Senatorial than squeal. So far, he is learning that the road to the nomination will be through his experience and brain. He has a good story to tell. He just needs to focus more on the story than the telling.
If Barack Obama is “the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy”, then Joseph Biden the real storybook.
