Although the campaign claimed bad weather was the reason they cancelled the trip, it seems clear that John McCain cancelled his trip to New Orleans due to a diesel fuel spill in the Mississippi River. McCain was going to use the visit to promote his views on offshore drilling and visit an oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico. It would have been the wrong message and the worst possible timing for McCain to promote these views as the oil spill is being contained.
McCain had hoped to use this week to increase speculation on his vice presidential pick has a way of mitigating the national media’s love affair with Barack Obama. There were some reports that McCain was going to choose his vice presidential nominee this week as a way of upstaging Obama. As the week progressed, those rumors were viewed as farfetched and indicative of the desperation that the McCain is feeling. They can only complain as the presumptive Democratic nominee continues his overseas trip and the media coverage is overwhelming and uniformly positive.
Obama is getting the type of coverage even a President does not receive. On the other hand, McCain has been abandoned. At a recent campaign stop in New Hampshire, the Republican Senator was greeted by only one reporter and one measly television camera. Obama has hundreds of cameras following him on his trip. Studies have now confirmed that the media has picked their favorite, Barack Obama, and is trying to force this selection on the American people.
Does it matter that Obama is relatively inexperienced, or that he is wrong on Iraq, or that he has been rated as the most liberal U.S. Senator? After President Bush lifted the moratorium on offshore drilling, the price of oil has dropped about $20 per barrel. Has anyone noticed what Obama’s position is on offshore drilling? The media is covering for Obama and propelling him as much as possible. McCain, in contrast, is being ignored or ridiculed. Just listen to the late night comics if you wonder how McCain is being treated. Try to find one joke about Obama, it is next to impossible.
The media helped Obama win the Democratic nomination, now they are trying to help him win the White House. Even Clinton Campaign Chairman Terry McAuliffeadmitted that “90%” of the media is behind Obama.
In the face of this media onslaught, McCain needs something dramatic to change the race. He is falling into a dangerous position right now and needs to re-energize his campaign and his supporters. Many Republicans, according to political columnist Robert Novak, are “disillusioned.” His fate may ultimately depend on the vice presidential pick. McCain needs someone who will bring energy and enthusiasm to his ticket and get the media to start paying attention to the GOP ticket. Bottom line, McCain needs help lots of help.

... on the other hand. Our politics follow a simplistic path - one party gets in - their constituents get lazy while the opposition gets fired up. Back and forth. Perhaps the only way to get a conservative resurgence is to have Obama take office. I am thankful W managed to get in office to appoint a couple of Supreme Court Justices (I haven't heard much lately about the recent 2nd Amendment ruling. Perhaps it is not to the media's liking?). On the other hand W and the Republicans did not show fiscal responsibility, so many disgruntled Republican supporters might not vote this election (then back to the usual "get fired up" <too late after Obama taxes the hell out of them> and go to the polls while liberals stay home because "the Republican Party is dead"). Personally, I do not like short, catchy phrases in speaking of politics, and I do not believe in the Christ of literal tradition, much less in an Anti-Christ, so much of what has been said about those topics makes no sense to me. I also do not see that the media is in any way, shape, or form, ``liberal``. For me, the media is corporate business, run for maximum profit, therefore willing to censor and create news according to the bottom line. The CEO`s of the media change positions according to market analyses. We have little objective discussion of events except in a few internet and print magazines. Most newspapers are beholden to their advertisers, not to their readers, so we get reports on Britney Spears and not on Dennis Kucinich. I don`t call that liberal. Where are the reports in the media, for example, about McCain`s cooperation with his captors? His comrades in arms have not been complimentary, yet nothing is reported in the media about their comments. I contrast that silence with the devastating mis-use of reports about John Kerry from his comrades. That also is not liberal. I am no fan of Barack Obama, but the Republican Party has brought the US to the most serious Constitutional crisis since the War Between the States and its most serious economic crisis since the Great Depression, and I must support a Democrat for no other reason than that. Not a conspiracy, rather bias. Generally speaking the media favors Democrats and northerners. If the presidential race were between say... northern Republican Rudy Guiliani and southern Democrat Sam Nunn, there would be more sympathetic reporting on Rudy than McCain will get since Rudy is enamored by many in the media. Also as CL has said, his campaign would get more coverage since he's much more "exciting" than McCain is. As far as visiting an offshore platform being the wrong message due to a loss of containment (spill) in the Mississippi.... well... loss of containment such as Chernobyl and.... every day death by accidental electrocution are also "bad" - that doesn’t mean we won't have more of these sources of energy. Quit making excuses for McCain Jeff. McCain wanted Obama to travel to Afghanistan and Iraq. McCain got just what he asked for. Obama deserves the attention his overseas trip is getting. By all accounts, he has done better than McCain expected. What McCain is doing here by comparison is the same tired old routine. He's getting the amount of coverage he deserves. McCain has been the presumptive GOP nominee since March and he still hasn't decided on a running mate.
