Obama, McCain Vote: Not White Or Black

Written by: Stephen Sabludowsky

Buzz Right Back----E-Mail a Friend----Print Page

Today, I have the privilege of voting for either a remarkable American war hero or for a very inspiring young man who happens to also be

the first half-white, half-African American individual with a substantial chance to be President of the United States.

I understand that on many issues, the two candidates are miles and generations apart.  Occasionally, they do agree as they did on the dramatic Wall Street bail out plan.  Both of them have significant strengths and weaknesses, politically, professionally and personally.

John McCain is an honorable person who has often crossed party lines to forge deals with the “enemy”.   If he should lose as it is expected, I would hope that Barack Obama would offer him a position in his cabinet.  If he should win, which is not likely, I would hope that McCain would do the same in the spirit of a unity government.  Obviously, neither events are very  likely.

Amazingly, McCain won the primary because of George Bush and he could lose the election for the same reason.  When Bush called for the surge, McCain stood behind the President and his political stock began to rise.  When the stocks on Wall Street began to plunge, so did McCain’s campaign.

There is little doubt that McCain would make a noble President and when I do decide on my choice today, I will continue to list the positives and the negatives of each candidate, weigh as much as I can and then vote.

I am certain about one thing.  I will not vote for or against Obama based upon race.  However, I am honored that during my lifetime I now have the opportunity to vote for a “black President”

I do wish that Obama had more experience and I am concerned about the world testing him as Joe Biden has predicted.  But, he possesses many strengths that should be considered.

The entire concept that a half-black person will likely be President of the United States is profound.  When I grew up, the only black person I knew was my family house maid.  Segregation was supreme.  The opportunity for a black person to become an elected official was a virtual impossibility.  My first black acquaintance occurred in college and I first began to understand that whites were not born inherently supreme.

I spent many years of my life helping to break the shackles of civil rights to undo civil wrongs.

However, I do believe the excesses of the Great Society was an over-reaction to the cruelties of the Jim Crow days.  I believe that many of the young black men were “front-line grunts” in Viet Nam, that they can home addicted to drugs which were abundant and they were unprepared, in general, for competing in a society that would not let them into the doors of the private sector.  African Americans also made some significant errors individually and as a community and need to take responsibility for their actions even if they have been handicapped as a people for generations due to prejudices.

Welfare reform under Bill Clinton was a great beginning and one day soon I hope that there will be absolute opportunity equalities.

The greatest achievement in my life has been participating and watching the marked desegregation of the races—politically and socially.  Without doubt, we have a long way to go.  We have a lot of hate from and against both sides before we become a real “color-blind society”.  But, we are on the road to opening more doors when only fifteen years ago, many of those opportunities in the private sector were blocked for blacks.

I feel that I have helped break many racial barriers in my adult life and really preach and live the life that people should be judged by their abilities and by their ideas and not by their skin color.

Thus, I hope that nobody votes for Obama because he is black.  Likewise, I hope nobody votes against him for the same reason.

However, I am not naive to pretend that race will not play a major role in the Presidential and other elections in Louisiana and in this country.  While it is fair to vote for a person because they share the same life experiences, it is wrong to vote for or against a person merely because they possess a darker or lighter skin.

I know that in many cases individuals will vote for Barack Obama because of his politics, his philosophies and not because of race.  I feel that these people would be truly “enlightened”, if they feel he is truly the best person for the job and they vote for him based upon his ideas and not because of skin color.

Of all of the reasons to select a person for President, I believe race should be the least important.  There should not be a “chocolate city” or a “chocolate country”.  The beauty behind America is because of its diversity.  But, diversity is not a reason to select anyone President.

I, personally will vote and will consider issues such as Iraq, the Louisiana rebuild, the economy, the future makeup of Congress and so many other factors before I push that voting machine button.  Voting is the greatest privilege in a democracy.  Voting for a person because of race would be the worse mistake.  I am so pleased I have an opportunity to vote for a man of color.  I absolutely will not vote for an individual because of color.

May the best man win, whether white or black.  Who ever does become President, may we raise our heads with pride because we did what was right, not what is white or what is black.  A vote solely based upon race would demean our system more than any of the attack ads have inflicted harm during this very ugly but colorful election.

This past election was fairly predictible - race wise. Now... had it been Hillary Clinon vs. Condi Rice - that would have been much harder to predict how the votes would be split racially - particularly in our state.

interesting that here in Louisiana white racism runs rampant because the state went for McCain rather convincingly? Neh Neh dear liberal, it' sbecause for the the most part we in Louisiana are a conservative people, although you can't tell that by the politicians that keep getting re-elected in New Orleans. This election was liberal versus less liberal, maybe next time we can have a real conservative to vote for.

While I do not deny white racism, if there are liberals out there who do not think there is such a thing as black racism, drive on out this weekend to the corner of Elysian Fields and I-610. Pick up ($1 or free if you ask nice) from the black gentleman in the suit and bow tie Minister Farrakhan's latest pamphlet. I do not see any type of evil as belonging solely to any group. I do see evil embraced by larger percentage of males than females, but that too is only a matter of degree. I also think that defining those whose opinions differ from yours by the most extreme elements is the same mindset as the evil of racism.

I'm curious Mr. Quidd, if Condi Rice had run against Hillary Clinton - and you voted for Hillary - would that be due to you being a racist? Could many of the 40% or so of voters who always vote Republican simply have voted so this time because they do not abide by the Democratic Party's platform? I will be objective enough to admit THERE WERE some whites who voted for McCain due to racism but that leads to one other question - to see how objective you can be - did not some blacks in New Orleans vote for Bill Jefferson due to their racist beliefs? Ignorance, racism, sexism are not solely traits of whites, southerners or Republicans, of that I am quite certain.

And so now racism is replaced with ignorance....... I can see a big advantage in that!!!!!! Oh well, I suppose it is another lesson we will have to endure.....

The election results show that while racism has declined in the country over all, it is still very strong here in Louisiana. Hopefully that will change.

I don’t know about that moderate indy voice…….. Perhaps it is not so much a shoddy campaign rather than they are campaigning specifically to shoddy voters? Jefferson? Back in so it appears….. Oh well KPF, I guess ‘change’ isn’t really what was wanted, or so it would appear…….. And Landrieu, well, there you go again, but in this instance it is obvious that ‘change’ wasn’t wanted neither by the democrats, nor the democrats, because after all, it was in reality only two democrats running for the same office in that district……. So it would cause a person to pause and wonder about the Republicans in this state…. Well, hell no, they obviously don’t want change, unless it means a change in the amounts of funding that can be sucked from the federal treasury, and that on an incremental increase value I would assume…… Why else would a republican party select a democrat mole to run for an office? Either way they win, and the song remains the same….. I suppose the same holds true for Piyush…. I guess the only good thing that will come about as a result of Obama gaining victory, is the the racecar…… er, uh, racecard probably won’t play such a significant role in upcoming elections… That one was played out this time around….. Yeah, those Republicans, gotta luv ‘em, but think really hard as to the reasoning’s why Elizabeth Dole was not re elected……..

I am hoping that having a black president will one day cause black voters to not vote for a crook like Dollar Bill. I also belive that although the world is moving to ever more social safety nets (a "good thing" as Martha would say) we also need to realize it is our robust capitalist economy that ALLOWS us to be so generous with not only our own people - but immigrants and also other nations. I do have faith in this country and do not believe for one instance that the rest of the country will adopt the "welfare dependency distrust of white people" that defines New Orleans government. That's not going to happen simply because we will soon have a black president. Nor do I believe that this election is "the end of the GOP" - those who do will soon find out differently. Lastly, thank Gawd the Dems do not have a super majority in the Senate; although many on this board have stated that one party or the other has been in power - um....not really. Neither party has had to complete power that would come with control of the House, Presidency and a filabuster-proof Senate - I hope I never live to see the day when either party does.

We voted yesterday and we voted for an American? Which one of the candidates is our business. We did not look at ancestry, we looked at the quality of the person. It is time to stop referring to people by the color of their skin and start recognizing that all of us, for the most part, at this time in history are of mixed heritages. Stop referring to white, black, yellow, brown, etc. Start referring to people as Americans of various ancestries. Let's get over this shameful behavior. Stephen, dear, we knew many Americans of African ancestry and we were taught to treat them with respect. Others were not and this has led to an unfortunate aspect of hatred over the years and continues to this very day. Let's pledge ourselves to a change in attitude and the manner of describing individuals. We are all Americans. That is what is most important and we need to look at the very basis for the formation of this nation and bring it back into the limelight so that we all can learn.

The real no. 1 reason to consider in the voting booth: the quality of campaign that each side ran. If someone is running a shoddy campaign, might that be a sign that they aren't such a great manager?

In fact, when it comes to black or white, consider Stevie Wonder....... Blind as a bat, so what was he??????? Where can race or even racism ever be a factor in to any kind of discussion where he could be concerned.... Obama half white? So what? Obam half black? So what? Obama a good speaker? I know a lot of used car salesmen that are good speakers, and they are every bit as capable of selling a lemon as Obama..... So what does he have to offer? Nothing but a bunch of fantasies that are just as easily manifested when taking a psychedelic drugs. The only difference between those and him I suppose is the next day a person wouldn’t be under the influence of such and they would be faced with reality and afforded the choice to deal with it or not deal with it if they quit taking them…… But Obama isn’t something you can just quit taking one day now if he is elected now is he? And we will have to deal with his hallucinations for many years to come whether we like it or not…… And 2012? Things will be so screwed up we won’t even have the slightest clue as to where to begin to even try to ‘change’ things……. This is it………………………………………………………………………………

We currently have 5 tax brackets; it has been this way for well over a decade…. Previously there were two tax brackets, that is where personal INCOME TAX is concerned…. Then there are other tax basis, Corporate, Sole Proprietorship, etc., etc., etc…… 5% of $100,000 is way more than 5% of $20,000…. Taxes NOT going to go up? IMPOSIBLE….. The ‘billions’ of wasted dollars wouldn’t run this country for a day…….. That is not an arguing point, however, the fact that billions are wasted is……….. It is the principle of the thing……. And when opportunity and productivity is suffocated, there can only be the adverse effect of the weakening of our populations financial security and values that will be at stake.. NAFTA? Very unfair….. Most favored trading nation status awards? You have to examine what is really being advocated…… On his way out the door, Eisenhower said something to the effect of “Beware of the military industrial complex” Now the military industrial complex has diversified into other fields that are highly beneficial to man, things such as satellites, real time data processing and imagery capabilities, unique and useful technological improvements that are assimilated into everyday life….. But the international arms trade situations are really getting out of hand, as are our immigration policies….. All of these things are factors in the taxation processes, and the reasoning’s of their development and enforcement for collection purposes….. It is only in relation to that can the contemplation of the ‘Billions be wasted’ be a subject of fastidious examination and remediation……. It is all about priorities…. Things that for the most part are completely not understood by most every day Americans such as the ‘Boston Tea party’ or even the Monroe Doctrines, Marshall Plans, and gagggggggg……. ‘New World Order’ considerations are what are at issue here…….. Sweet Mary Mother of Gawd, as stupid as people are today, you would think this Obama thing was some kind of Dredd Scott decision or something…… This change fantasy will produce nothing…….. The imaginary delusion or battle has been over for a long, long time……. And within a couple of years folks will come to their senses and realize “Geee, racism really was an illusion we fooled ourselves into thinking we were laboring under”…. Who cares? Getting back to basic principles…. Guns or Butter.. Guns or Butter… We have too many insulated/isolated perverse groups dictating our manufacturing policies… Is Obama going to revitalize the American Auto Industry Sector? Hell No, He has the same ability of doing so as Piyush does of reinvigorating the GM plant in North Louisiana….. Folks putting their faith in someone else instead of their selves….. That is what is going on…. Oh, but our candidates and leaders are so scholarly!!!!! They are a bunch of book learned shills, that’s all………. Obama pissing and moaning about having to live on food stamps……… Goes to show right there he doesn’t know the first thing about doing without……….. Our laws, and those that interpret them or pass them are in error…… oh, more blah, blah, blah, blah, blah……. You will find out,, I guess we have to hit rock bottom in order to appreciate what we had or imagined that we didn’t have…. What a bunch of spoiled shites. Sorry folks, I am just looking at the population in general and laughing at the ignorance that is rampantly preceding them….. In belief, and actions.

I noted this in a previous blog, and will do so again: the overwhelming majority of Blacks (maybe 90% or more) are Democrats, and will therefore vote for the candidate of their selected party. Isn't that what the majority of Republicans tend to do? And Steve, Obama is half white and half African. He identifies himself as African-American.

How can race not be an issue- when 90-95% of one group (AA) vote for a candidate- how can one state race is not an issue? If it was reversed what do you think people would say. They would be called racist. Look what happened to Hillary Clinton. Race does not appear to be problem for white voters though I am amazed the likes of Sam Nunn, etc... are in agreement with Jesse Jackson and the other liberals.

first of all, what a blunder to state $250k is the cut off......then $150k.....now it's $120k. secondly, there is NO NEED for tax hikes. There are billions wasted in ineffective government programs, waste, fraud, etc. THIRD......RAISING TAXES DURING A RECESSION IS STUPID. So, we as Americans will try out the New Orleans form of government! We have a sleaze ball black racist candidate who is connected to a lot of scumbags like Rev "hate the whites" Wright, farakon, Bill Ayers the terrorist, etc.....MARC MORIAL COMES TO MIND. We have Obama who wants to get off the backs of mafia involvement in the teamsters, wants to get rid of mandatory sentences and let the BAD ASSES who are subject of those sentences go free. JUST LIKE NEW ORLEANS, he will tax the white people and the black middle and upper class to give to the blacks. Free houses? they already have that. Maybe Obama will give them cars. ONE DIFFERENCE. OBAMA WANTS TO GUT THE MILITARY AND EXPOSE US TO RISK. NO SPIN, JUST WATCH THIS.......SCARY......NO SPIN....JUST WATCH....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dl32Y7wDVDs.......IT'S NOT BLACK AND WHITE, IT'S THE WORKS AND THE WORK-NOTS.

While I agree with your statement that one should not vote based on race, today, I will. If Ron Paul were running as the Republican presidential contender I would not. Part of me says to not vote for Obama due to the likelyhood of his being too much of a "tax and spend liberal." But I will vote for him due to the fact that I believe he is a decent man and yes - because he is black. Have you not seen the way many black people walk taller and look differently at us white people? I think having a black president will be a great thing for this country. In two years we can elect some Republicans to congress to keep the Democrats from spending all of our - and our children's - income on their government "entitlement" programs, but today I simply must cast my vote for Obama (I'll probably vote for every Republican besides him, but he will get my vote today).
