Polls Show John McCain Closer To Barack Obama Despite Media

Written by: Jeff Crouere

Buzz Right Back----E-Mail a Friend----Print Page

Each day pundits on CNN and MSNBC happily predict an Obama landslide. The broadcast news programs are cheerfully following along with these predictions. The only network to present an alternative point of view is Fox News.

What is interesting is that despite the media love for Obama, the polls in the presidential race are tightening. Two important polls show that McCain is within striking distance of Barack Obama. The Rasmussen poll has McCain only three points behind, while the Gallup poll has Obama ahead by only two points. This is within the margin of error and it basically shows a race that is tied. Obama still leads in the key battleground states, but if McCain can move his numbers nationally, he will improve his standing in the battleground states as well.

It must pain the Obama media that this race is becoming closer. They are so eager to pronounce Obama as the winner. The McCain movement in the polls is happening despite the millions of dollars of free advertising that Obama is receiving on a daily basis from the media.  Independent research has proved that Obama receives much more positive press than McCain.

Americans are not dumb and understand what is occurring in the media today. A poll by the Pew Center for the People and the Press shows that Americans by a 7 to 1 margin realize that the vast majority of journalists want Obama to win the presidency. Americans comprehend that the media is “in the tank” for the liberal Democrat.

The Obama loving media is not the only advantage that Obama enjoys. Tonight, he will be addressing the nation in a 30 minute infomercial, causing Fox to delay the start of the World Series. This purchase of air time is unprecedented and it clearly indicates the financial advantage Obama enjoys.

So, Obama has more money and almost all of the media in his pocket, but he is slipping slightly in the polls.  It is clear that voters across America are starting to wake up to the possibility of the most liberal President in our nation’s history. According to the National Journal, Obama is more liberal than every other U.S. Senator. The ranking means that Obama is more liberal than Ted Kennedy, Harry Reid and Barbara Boxer, quite a scary thought. The nation is not liberal and, in fact, it is a center-right country ideologically.

Obama does not represent the values of this country. Even worse, he has radical associations and limited experience, so he does not belong in the White House. Even his running mate, Joe Biden, acknowledges that Obama will be tested within an international crisis in the first few months of his presidency. Americans do not know how he will respond or how he will lead this nation, so it is an uncertain situation. This dilemma may become our national nightmare on November 4, unless enough Americans decide to exercise better judgment and avert potential disaster. Despite the wishes of the mainstream media, it is not too late for McCain to win this election.

I do hope that - whichever candidate wins the presidency - our next president has the courage and foresight to eliminate wasteful government spending - including entire departments if need be. However, regardless of which party is in power the "special interests" which receive this taxpayer-provided money will fight tooth and nail to keep their revenue - regardless of how useless to the country they may be. BTW, if one watches C-Span and sees congress crafting bills (I haven't since the early '90s, but I'm certain things have not changed) one can see there is completely unnecessary spending in any catagory (Social Security, Justice, whatever) as the more influential (based on senority and/or committee membership) congressmen get pork added to each and every expenditure passed by congress. It is actually sickening to see the head of - say, the Veterans Hospital Admininstration - be ignored as to what and where help (funds, that is) needs to be spent and instead see our "public servants" basically bribe each other with projects in their respective districts that the administrators say is not needed in that particular geographic area. Our pork barrel spending - along with our "gifts" to dictators overseas - tells me we have not yet hit a financial crises in our country. Perhaps our next president will lead the charge to reform our government's wasteful spending ways, I do hope this is so; but I won't be holding my breath expecting it to happen.

No one is contending that there is not waste in government. The pie chart just shows what the choices of where to start cutting are. Social Security? Medicare? Defense? Neither candidate actually did much to specify in which area they might cut spending. The tax/spending plans of BOTH candidates, to the extent that they have laid out any details, will mean more deficits and under McCain's plan the deficit will be even higher than under Obama's. This whole idea that Republicans are more skilled at reducing the waste and operating the government in the black is purely rhetoric (and remember that during the Bush years there were record deficits and even in times when the GOP had control of everything).

I wasn't aware that the A-7 was still in service.... Sort of an antique there.... The A-6e has an extended lifespan, as does the F-4u, and we all know about our wonderful B-52/B-1B - B-2 etc., etc., etc....... Ahhhhh,,, then perhaps you are saying that there is mucho conflicto of interests? Need some kind of GAO stopgap or something......

"The devil is in the details." I have seen bills crafted in congress (on C-Span) where "additions" were made that were completely unecessary. Two examples: 1) the VA wanted more hospital beds - but not in Florida where they had enough - but the committe chairman (uh... he was from Florida) crafted the spending for the VA's budget so that new hospitals would be built in Florida 2) the military no longer wanted the A-7 jet, but.... the committee chairman - in whose district the A-7 was built (Texas) - crafted the military procurement budget so that the jet would continue to be built. "Pork" is unnecessary spending added to necessary programs; therefore a pie chart showing "where the government spends its money" in no way shape or form disproves that much of the givernment's spending is wasteful and unnecessary.

While we're at it, let's establish these facts about government spending. The majority of it is for the sum of these things: interest on the federal debt, defense, social security and Medicare/Medicaid (George W. Bush added somewhat to that last one). http://www.factcheck.org/demos/factcheck/imagefiles/Image/PieChart.jpg

I am glad that everyone can agree that it was no myth that the government ran a surplus during the Clinton years. I just want to see the myth that the Reagan-to-Bush right wingers were somehow better managers, great stewards of the economy and that their whole trickle-down theory was a solid success busted. Because all it is is rhetoric. It's not based in fact. The myth that the federal deficit will be lower, that the cost to taxpayers will be ultimately be lower if McCain wins also needs to be busted. Because it is a myth. http://www.suntimes.com/news/politics/obama/1031268,CST-NWS-tax30.article

Bill Clinton was president for eight years. During his first two years his party controlled the House of Representatives and ran a deficit each of those two years. Then Gingrich and company took control of the House and the government ran a surplus for the remaining years of Clinton's presidency. No myth, just the facts. However the surplus was probably due more to divided govenment rather than responsible spending practices by either party. The irrefutable fact that "tax and spenders" will not admit to is that the government has had more money each and every year to spend. This means that spending has increased greater than the additional money government has had to spend - THIS SPENDING has caused the deficit. The problems with government spending (not ALL of it) is that it removes free choice (of the people) from how this money is spent. All too often it is special interests who decide how this money - taken from the people's economy - will be spent. The additional fact that our government spends money that future generations will have to repay is wrong and should never happen, IMHO.

Let's see...when was the last time that the federal government did not run a deficit? Was it during a GOP administration? No, it was not. When have there been the highest federal deficits? During Democratic administrations? No, not at all. Between the two candidates in this election, under their spending/tax plans (as far as we can know based on specifics of what they have revealed and presuming that neither one is lying about their plans) the plan of which one will feature a smaller deficit? The GOP candidate? Again, no. Now...if either one is lying then so be it. Is there any actual historical data that supports that since the time of Reagan Republican administrations have been better managers and more effective at reducing waste? Again, no, there is not. Perhaps this needs to be on "Mythbusters."

Oh yes, when you find yourself with a deficit, try spending LESS. Oh BTW, check out the site for the government's income from taxes (google it). You'll see that "tax cuts" did NOT cause the government to have less money - not in one single year of Reagan's presidency or EVER. So with the Federal government having more to spend each year the "deficit" HAD TO BE caused by SPENDING. "The government spends too much" - it needs to stop spending so much - it needs to eliminate unnecessary spending. The Democrats will not allow this to happen. They will in fact spend even more. Oh, pretend that isn't so... keep up the liberal (oh, I mean Moderately Independent) mantra of "tax cuts caused the deficit" if that floats your boat.

Actually I would answer "yes" to just about each and every question you asked. If this country isn't the best overall - despite perhaps not being number one in any particular catagory - then please tell us MIV, what country is? Really, where is this "better place" and why is that so? What many do not understand is that it is a free people who make a country great. So this country IS great - despite our politicians and their policies - not because of them.

The point is that we have had, well, probably one of the least competent, if not the most incompetent, administration ever for the last 8 years plus there have been these policies followed for most of the past 30 years that have left us where we are. Is the country in great shape? Are most of the people and especially the middle class doing well? Do we have the highest standard of living, health statistics, education statistics in the world? Are education and job opportunities abounding for all? Are we enjoying the most and best personal freedoms/individual rights available? Is the U.S. still widely respected and admired around the world and a leader in the world community in most ways? Are you better off today than you were 8 years ago? If "no" is the answer to most if not all of that then what to do about it? It sounds like there's an acknowledgment of the need for change but also a fear of the unknown. I'm saying that we already know what has not worked. Why stay with it?

To the notion about the nation not being able to survive 4 years of Democratic Party control of both the executive and the legislative branches, let's consider that the Reagan right wing has been in power for about 30 years and even when Clinton was president the Gingrich's, Bob Livingston's, Tom Delay's, etc. were prominent in Congress for much of that time...and what results do these people have to show for themselves? Tax cuts for the very rich having left us with monster deficits, decreased regulation having left us with financial businesses running themselves into the ground and taking the whole economy with them and the middle class having to endure stagnant earnings even in times of GDP growth.

So Al, it appears you are going to depend on a socialist such as Obama to make sure of that…… While you hide behind the tired veil of imaginary racism…… But I will agree with the observation you made; “………………..but they have added a class within a class. So to set yourself apart and be privy to those same benefits you were accustomed to, you now have to be in the upper echelon of the superior class.” Trouble is Al, you were just as involved in establishing the advent of the upper echelon of the “superior class” as anyone else out there……………. I have seen members of the ubermeister both BLACK and WHITE…………… And I suppose the only bitter pill there is for me to swallow is I can’t simply walk up to them and kick them in their balls and set them back in the box they came from…… And now I have blathering idiots such as yourself to contend with in the future if Oblahblah does get a shoe in……. Oh well, blacks were slaves before, they will probably have an easier time becoming one again than whites will I am pretty sure…. So folks, off to the salt mines to earn your fearless leaders their daily tithes………………… Not one brick less will be missing from the tally, no, not one brick less………

"Fast Eddie" you're right about Sarah Palins education. And I deem you worthy of correcting my errors. But that comment about her education was to highlight the fact that the, education and intelligence of Sarah Plain, John McCain, and George Bush combined, pale in comparison to Barack Obama. In true conservative fashion you proceeded to make all the other points null and void. Shoot the messenger and cherry pick the content. You threw in a "Joe the Plumber" so to speak. Just tell me how do supposedly intelligent people fall for diversionary crap like "Joe the Plumber" at such an important time in our history. Joe the dumb plumber will never make $200,000 a year. And yes fast Eddie I do. This is what McCain has had to resort to? Talk about drinking the Kool Aid. The sad part is if Joe the plumber was running against Barack Obama, all too many of the ignorant masses in America would fall in line behind him. Louisiana would be high on that list. Can you imagine if Barack Obama had some black wanna be plumber, wanna be business owner in tow. He would be the laughing stock of America. But you folks have a way of glorifying your own. Oh, look this black President is gonna stifle this hard working white guy. Which leads to how we had a President for the last eight years that can’t complete a sentence? A president that has been an embarrassment at home and abroad. It's so evident across parts of America that so many white folks haven't truly taken advantage of a system that so heavily favored them. They just thought they would get through life being a member of the superior class. And in truth that has worked for a long time. Race was the clear dividing line, and you did well under that system. But the folks in the Bush administration over the last 8 years have did a little "redistricting" on you folks who were just along for the ride. They haven't taken race out of the equation, but they have added a class within a class. So to set yourself apart and be privy to those same benefits you were accustomed to, you now have to be in the upper echelon of the superior class. Flying along on your whiteness doesn't cut it anymore. And I can imagine for every white person in America leading a mediocre, or sub par life if you will, that's a tough pill to swallow. And Barack Obama stands as a symbol of your failure as opposed to a symbol of American achievement , which if the shoe were on the other foot would be glorified. Whether Obama wins or not, hopefully he has made America take a long look in the mirror. A long look at its morals and values and how they apply to EVERY American. I think Barack Obama will at least help us along this long road to recovery and we can truly become “One Nation Under God”. Peace be with you Eddie. God Bless America

Jeff, you are only putting out the campaign talking points. The fact of the matter is that there is very little evidence that the race is tightening. CNN's poll of polls (which takes the average of all the major polls) still has Obama with an 8 point lead nationally; you have cherry picked the one or two outlying polls that have a closer race. Furthermore, the Gallup poll you cited (with a 3 point margin0 is one which is based on "traditional and typical" voters - it does not calculate all the new voters who are voting this time. Furthermore, McCain finds himself in the last week of the campaign defending red states, which is not a good sign. Finally, STOP repeating the lie from the NATIONAL JOURNAL that Obama is the most liberal senator in the U.S. Senate. Independent groups who rate the ideological bent of senators have rated 40 other Democratic senators as more liberal than Barack Obama. But. like conservatives tend to operate, never let a small matter like the facts get in the way of the story you all want to tell.

Connecticut GOP congressman Chris Shays has been the latest conservative to criticize the way McCain has run his campaign. It will be interesting to see what transpires with the GOP to come with the more staunch, shrill right wing types perhaps siding with Palin and the rest of the party looking to re-brand and move the party away from, let's say, Rush Limbaugh-ism or Lou Dobbs-ism and back toward the more traditional pre-Reagan concept of being conservative. The whole nearly 30-year era of Reagan-ism is finally coming to an end, even if McCain wins (although his main policy ideas as regards the economy are still mainly the same old GOP tax cuts for the very rich, etc.). Those ideas were fresh at one time but have been tried and are now stale. The trickle-down theory Reaganomics (and also as practiced by Bush the son) have not helped the middle class, whose position has been stagnant (even during times of GDP growth) while the very rich have greatly widened the gap, and without a vibrant middle class indeed, yes, Democracy itself is in danger or at least will have a hard time working as it should. Whether one likes Obama or not or can't stand the thought of possible socialism, he is right in that the economy does work from the bottom up, not from the top down.

The post about demeanor says it all. A real conservative does not feel the need to be loud or shrill; the very essence of being conservative is being subdued, quiet, dignified, calm and under control. Those are excellent virtues, but have been long forgotten in this day and time of people constantly venting anger and seeking attention and whining when they can't get it. Granted, Reagan was a master at seemingly staying calm and under control but he WAS an actor.

Tell "Written by Al" that it didn't take Sarah Palin eight years to finish junior college--rather it was six different educational institutions to finish an undergraduate journalism degree. But she completed her undergraduate education, getting a bachelors degre in journalism, while being married, employed by numerous television stations (in different geographic locations) and having several children, for which you should not only cut her some slack, but give her some credit. You should also note that she has been uniformly successful in her life pursuits, and is vastly more intelligent than you would have one believe. Speaking about intelligence and education, you Al, leave serious doubt as to the adequacy of your own--your prose is replete with grammatical errors, as well as errors of tense and case. There are many more military heroes then John McCain and some of them that actually finished the mission without getting captured. After all that's the point isn't it Jeff. Maybe they don't want a guy who finished 935 out of 950 in his college graduating class. Maybe they don't want a guy that cheated on his wife with his present wife. Maybe they don't want a guy that owns 8 houses and calls himself one of us. Maybe they don't want a guy that's running around with Joe the Plumber as his last hope. Maybe women don't want a guy that picked ANY female running mate to appease them, as opposed to a qualified female running mate. This woman is extremely ignorant. Took her 8 years to finish junior college. Just maybe the thought of Sarah Palin as commander in Chief, just rightfully scares the hell out of intelligent Americans. Maybe they don't want the guy who was such a integral part of the Keating five that he had to be rebuked in the senate. But yet him and his wife loved flying around on Charles Keating's jet while the savings and loan scandal was growing out of control, much like the financial mess we are in today. People lost their savings and their homes just like today, and John McCain was at the center of it and didn't learn from it. So again the American people suffer with savings, home, and job losses. Look around Jeff the country is crumbling at your dirty little republican feet. Maybe unlike you Jeff, there or more intelligent and unbiased people in America then you care to realize. Why would I want John McCain as the Commander-in-Chief? Even though I believe all military have an obligation to their country to disobey the Commander when he gives unconstitutional orders, with McCain the military have to ask how serious and concerned a Commander he would be anyhow. . . . In Denver in early July, a Vietnam veteran asked Sen. John McCain why he had opposed increasing healthcare for veterans over the past six years. McCain ignored the man's question. After the veteran challenged McCain's response, the senator got angry, as he so often does. Here is a guy who brags he is a friend of veterans, but his legislative history shows just the opposite. . . . In 2005, Sen. Daniel Akaka introduced legislation that would have increased veterans' medical care. He also introduced a bill that would have set aside $10 million for "readjustment counseling services" - a program to provide a wide range of counseling services for those returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, to ease their readjustment back into society. But McCain - and other Republicans who are more concerned with using government funds for tax cuts for multi-millionaires or for corporate subsidies - voted this effort down. . . . The Homes for Heroes Act - which Sen. Barack Obama introduced in April 2007 - would have helped provide housing for low-income veterans and helped tackle the problem of homelessness among military veterans. The bill died, though the House overwhelmingly passed a similar bill in July, and its companion version still awaits a new vote in the Senate. . . . The Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2007 by Sen. Jim Webb restores the old GI Bill and provides troops with the educational benefits enjoyed by the men and women who served in the three decades following World War II. Although this bill did not initially make it to vote, it was incorporated into the new GI bill that the Senate - absent McCain, who was at a fundraiser in California - passed in May. . . . The Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), the country's largest Iraq veterans' group, looked at 155 Senate votes since Sept. 11, 2001, on legislation that "affected troops, veterans or military families." It then awarded each senator a grade by comparing his or her votes to IAVA's view of what constitutes effective support for active troops, veterans and their families. No senator received an "A" grade. Thirteen senators - all Democrats - received an "A-." The worst grade received by a Senate Democrat was higher than the best grade granted to a Republican. Sen. Obama, for his part, got a B+. Sen. McCain received a "D.". . . In 2007, the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), after surveying McCain's votes on healthcare issues for its 1.3 million members, gave him only 20 percent. By contrast, DAV gave 194 Democrats and 7 Republicans a perfect 100 percent. Even by GOP standards, McCain's performance suffers. . . . This party-line voting pattern suggests that McCain is a legislative follower, if he shows up at all. In a 2006 Washington Post column by David Ignatius, McCain described his loyalty to Bush as being so profound that he said he wouldn't rule out giving up his Senate seat to become secretary of defense if Donald Rumsfeld were to leave. "I would have to assess where I can be most effective," said McCain. "It's awfully hard to say no to the president of the United States." And McCain's record makes that abundantly clear.

Conservatives should vote for Obama...Why? Less debt. Yes, Obama will raise taxes on those earning over a quarter of a million. And he will spend on healthcare, Iraq, Afghanistan and the environment. But so will McCain. He plans more spending on health, the environment and won't touch defense of entitlements. And his refusal to touch taxes means an extra $4 trillion in debt over the massive increase presided over by Bush. And the CBO estimates that McCain's plans will add more to the debt over four years than Obama's. Fiscal conservatives have a clear choice.

Fox didn't delay the game by their own admission. They just trimmed the pregame commentary. Get your facts straight, Jeff. The polls always tighten leading up to election day. It just means the base is shoring up. I like to think of it as an accordion that stretches out and pulls back in. Again, get your facts straight, Jeff.

I guess everyone has now seen the cartoon where in the first block The Man is taking $130 million of Barack's $450 million campaign war chest and giving it to McCain because, under 'social justice" we should be spreading the wealth. The look on Obama's face in the next block presages the collective face of a shocked nation when it realizes he was talking about taking THEIR money to redistribute in order to create the "real change" of his brand of "social justice". Now that's change you can believe in.

Jeff, dear, is this the OCTOBER AWAKENING? It appears to us that Halloween has come a bit earlier than anticipated. Well, dears, what can we say. When we turn on the tv, open the newspaper, or go online we see pure craziness all over the place. Let's just look at a few of the issues. 1. Barack is spending all of that money for an infomercial tonight to say what? Just what he has been saying for months while he should have been carrying out his responsibilities as a U. S. Senator. 2. Jindal is out of the state searching for campaign funds. Why isn't he where he belongs? Here in Louisiana looking at the surplus and the anticipated deficit for next year. 3. Big Mouth Ray is calling for increases in property taxes while much of the citizenship of New Orleans remains in a quandry as to what is being done with all of the money that he has had and what is going on with a recovery. Go back to the original plans there were developed by the original committee on recovery, bite the bullet, and recognize that the footpad of this city must be changed for the well being of the citizens. All three are typical politicians. Heck give us all that money and we will make the improvements that must be made with quality teachers, contractors, and leaders. Not self serving hypocrites like the three above. NOW WHAT COSTUME SHOULD WE CHOSE FOR FRIDAY NIGHT OR IS IT TONIGHT OR TOMORROW NIGHT. WHATEVER, WE STILL SAY GAIN WITH MC CAIN!!!!!

Jeff, there may be a liberal Obama loving media out there, but you are only looking at one of the branches on the thorn tree.... You need to look at root cause and effect..... Who smiles biggest when someone loses? It sure isn't going to be the common working people of the United States of America, but it surely will be when Obama is drummed out....... Next stop, Piyush....... He is one image/fad fraud that needs to be kicked to the curb as well..... The Republicans AND the Democrats need to get back to basics, balance their selves out, and get on with the show..... The only chance we have of maintaining our national sovereignty which is vital for the freedoms of the individual people and the states they reside in is to assault our export system and whip it into shape…. Stronger manufacturing, jobs, security… Balance is of the essence… We need more common people representing our common interests in government, not a bunch of elitists……………..
