The Louisiana Primary Care Association has sent out an email thanking Congressman Cao for voting for the health care bill on Saturday. The Association in its email said, “Over the weekend, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a historic health care reform bill. We are grateful for all of you that contacted your U.S. Representatives about the importance of passing this piece of legislation. The vote was 220 yeas and 215 nays. Two hundred and nineteen (219) Democrats and 1 Republican voted for the bill. Thirty-nine Democrats (39) and 176 Republicans voted against the bill. If you are wondering who that lone Republican was that voted for the health care reform bill, it was U.S. Rep. Joseph Cao that proudly represents Louisiana's 2nd Congressional District. Rep. Cao was the only Louisiana Rep. that voted FOR the healthcare reform bill and that against the entirety of the Republican Party.
Rep Cao issued this statement on his website about his vote:
Of his vote, Cao said: “Tonight, I voted to keep taxpayer dollars from funding abortion and to deliver access to affordable health care to the people of Louisiana."
Cao said: “I read the versions of the House [health reform] bill. I listened to the countless stories of Orleans and Jefferson Parish citizens whose health care costs are exploding – if they are able to obtain health care at all. Louisianans needs real options for primary care, for mental health care, and for expanded health care for seniors and children."
Cao said: “Today, I obtained a commitment from President Obama that he and I will work together to address the critical health care issues of Louisiana including the FMAP crisis and community disaster loan forgiveness, as well as issues related to Charity and Methodist Hospitals. And, I call on my constituents to support me as I work with him on these issues."
BACK TO LPCA:
We still have much work to do as the Bill goes to the Senate!
Some Key Provisions in the Health Care Reform Bill
The Bill will cost about $890 billion dollars and is set to reduce the deficit in the long term.
The Bill will provide coverage for an additional 36 million uninsured Americans.
Medicaid will expand to cover up to 150% of the federal poverty level.
Financial assistance is provided to aid those who cannot afford insurance coverage.
Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) will receive a substantial funding increase over the next five years. This funding will allow FQHCs to reach an additional 20 million patients nationwide.
Significant National Health Services Corps funding will be used to aid in getting primary providers into medically under served areas. “
On a national scale National Association of Community Health Centers, the AARP, the American Cancer Society, the AMA were officially in support of the legislation. However, there were also various national organizations who were opposed to the legislation including various numerous members of each of these organizations who have expressed their objections both before and after the passing of the legislation.
The National Republican Congressional Committee has a link on their web site to a commercial on Youtube that blames the Democrats and linking them with trial lawyers
and claiming that voters have a choice next year at the ballot box.The commercial does not mention Republican Congressman Cao who represents parts of New Orleans and Jefferson Parish and who is running for re-election in a minority-dominated Congressional district.

This guy is an naive idiot....... I would no more trust Obama to assist these people, than I believe that the abortion language will stay in the final version of the bill.
If these people think they have an issue now, wait until they see what's on the horizon.

Whether it is the right thing to do or not, the bill will cost far more than they claim - as the actual costs of "big ticket items" is usually many times the "projected" cost supplied by congress - and it will not reduce the deficit. Rather it will add to the tax burden of those who pay taxes and provide care for those too poor to provide their own preventative care. Hopefully there will be the offset for taxpayers of not having bankruptcy looming over them due to loss of coverage and limits on out-of-pocket expenses. We'll see what happens. Written by kpf
