Harry. Reid, US Senate Consider Iraq War Options

Senator Harry Reid and the Democrats are just playing folly with Iraq.

Despite wavering by some moderate Republicans last week and President Bush’s alluding to his possibly accepting benchmarks, they are whistling in the wind, for now.

Starting this week, the US Senate is about to consider at least three measures including one that is almost a carbon copy of a bill President Bush vetoed, another which calls for cutting off all funds to the Iraq war by March 31, 2008, a third giving greater weight to the opinion of Gen. David Petraeus..

Last week, the US House passed legislation costing $95 billion for the Iraq war which would fund the war in two installments.  That plan seems to hit a roadblock in the Senate.

Which means the Senate would come up with their own plan and the House would consider it, reject it, counter or who knows what?

Meanwhile the Iraq war is a state a flux at a time when the US is talking to Iran regarding their role in the conflagration.

This confusion explains why Congress is now being viewed as low in the polls as President Bush, but it also explains how fractured the American public is concerning the proper path to take in winning or ending the war.

Meanwhile, more pressure is being placed upon Iraq to stand up and take political and military responsibility.  If there is any single point of agreement by republicans and democrats in the US House and Senate, it is that Iraq must play a stronger role in putting together their own stack of cards which includes making certain that the oil revenues are shared fairly.

However, any legislation that Congress considers as President Bush wags with his veto pen must allow for the current Bush surge to try to work its magic, or else the President will just say no.

Congress and the Administration have many options but it needs to make them work soon as money is drying up quickly.  Should Congress not at least allow this last surge to prevail, the Democrats will be blamed for abandoning the troops.

Whether we like it or not, the war must go on fully funded because the President will veto any legislation he does not like.  Perhaps down the road, as the Presidential campaign takes off and the candidates stake their Iraq claims into the ground, things will be different, but for now, despite all the posturing, Congress must produce or the Democrats will continue to lose ground and face for not being able to get things done.

.

"Whether we like it or not, the war must go on fully funded because the President will veto any legislation he does not like." NO. The war must be fully funded because we have "boots on the ground" that deserve to be fully funded. "despite all the posturing, Congress must produce or the Democrats will continue to lose ground and face for not being able to get things done." Steve, the democrats are just posturing. They are not Commander-in-Chief. They knew that President Bush would veto that bill. Yet they wasted precious time and money making their political points while troops went unfunded. The Legislative Branch has the power of the purse. They can stop the war. They can defund it. They won't because it would be political suicide. They don't get anything done because though they claim a mandate to govern they have no plan, no vision. If it weren't for being against something, they would have nothing. Let them present their plan to win in Iraq or tell us what will happen if we leave Iraq. They know what will happen. I heard Bill Clinton say in a political video for Hillary that if she becomes President we will begin to make friends again instead of enemies. How telling that is. According to him in this video everybody loved us until Bush became President. So he really wasn't worried about Bin Laden or anybody else. The terrorist did not exist before Bush. How naive is that? Obama said recently that the whole world will breathe a sigh of relief when Bush leave the Presidency. Well we know the terrorits will especialy if a Democrat sits in the White House. They probalby read our papers and magazines, watch CNN the Alphabet Channels and are now writing their terms of surrender. We live in a very dangerous time. We had better pick our leaders carefully. They better know exactly the evil we face.

Thanks for the backup, Jim. My real fear as I said is that the American people get most of their "information" from the 20 second soundbytes on the Alphabet Networks, CNN, Headlines (many misleading or just plain false) in Newspapers and Magazines, and do not take the time to do any research. If they did they would understand that no matter what we do or not do, these people will come after us. There - here. Makes little difference to them. GWB knows this. I think the fact that attacks on us continued even after GHWB left Iraq leaving Saddam in power was not lost on him. Saddam took his revenge on the Kurds in the North and the Shiites in the South. It was a bloodbath which will pale in comparison to what will happen if we leave Iraq now. The people who flew thoe planes into the Twin Towers were not representing any country. They represent an ideology that is all over the world. The one thing they do understand is power and steadfastness. Bush won't back down. In this way he can be compared to a Lincoln, a Churchill, and Truman whom I believe made a decision that did save millions of lives. The one that takes Bush's place will be tested quickly, I believe. Hope he/she will be up to the task. For sure so far the Democrat talking points point to a victory for the terrorists as almost every one favors slivering out of Iraq white flag in hand.

Sharon, KUDOS! You are a savvy lady, and I agree 100% with you. Bush has assessed the world situation WE ALL face correctly, and has had the courage to act & take firm steps to protect our people, country, culture, society & future way of life, versus a real enemy USA citizens do NOT understand & badly underestimate. Regardless of polls & understandable dislike for war & conflict, he protects us whether or not we understand. I am very grateful to God that Gore & Kerry were not in office. Bush's stubborn tenacity has been a blessing, and has given our country time to respond by increasing our security & defenses. Clearly, congress, the media, and most of our people want this to just "go away"-it will NOT! We MUST face this world threat, and Bush is very much like Churchill was(despised by Brits for a decade before proven correct & becoming a hero of history vs Hitler & Nazis). Pelosi/Reid/Murtha are like Neville Chamberlain(pompous arrogance & horrible perception/leadership=100% WRONG).History does repeat-Bush is RIGHT! Iran, Syria & Russia are the real threat, & WE MUST BE PREPARED globally/militarily! We are ALL naive to the situation in our complacent USA, and we share apathy, which will be our undoing if we do not shake it. To understand the real situation today, I wish ALL USA citizens would read General GEORGE SADA's "Secrets of Saddam", BRIGITTE GABRIELLE'S "Because They Hate", and 5 incredibly insightful books by JOEL C ROSENBERG-latest is "Epicenter". These 3 knowedgable people have lived there, experienced the culture clash and violence of ideologies we are dealing with, and outline not only what is going on and why, but how we NEED to respond, as christians(like 85% of USA citizens self-proclaim). The history of mankind is war. This is radical RELIGIOUS-based hatred & conflict. Our enemy seeks world rule by Islam, destruction of Jews, Christians, and western civilizations to install their beliefs globally. They believe in death & violence to achieve their goals, and do not tolerate or respect freedoms as we do. They believe WAR is the answer to do what they are absolutely committed to do. If anyone doubts this, read what Iran's Ahmdinejad has said, what he states & says he believes & has lived. Compare this to Hitler's Mein Kampf. World domination & rule ARE the objective. We did not heed Hitler(Churchill) until nearly too late, and seem again to be ignoring another madman who HAS NUCLEAR WEAPONS COMING SOON! Americans, Brits, Aussies, Canadians, and other freedom-loving western cultures had better take this seriously, or face potentially disastrous consequences, like "Convert or die" if we do not defend our faith and way of life--its not free!!! If true wisdom starts with fear of the Lord, perhaps while on earth we should all start with fear of evil & enemies, & DEFEND! With PEACE, LOVE, & GOD'S BLESSINGS to all people of good will, THE MAJOR
