Iraq Tour Longer As Iraqi Parliament Members Killed

US Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced longer tours of duty for US troops in Iraq as violence intensified across Baghdad and living conditions for Iraqis plunged to an all-time low.

In breaking news, it has been reported that a bomb exploded in the heavily fortified Green Zone in Baghdad, where the Iraqi parliament is located, killing at least two Members of Parliament and wounding six others.

Mr Gates told a Pentagon news conference on Wednesday that, effective immediately, all active-duty Army soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan will serve 15-month tours, extending deployments by three months longer than the standard.

The new policy affects only those serving in the US Army. The Marines will continue to serve their standard seven-month tours and Army National Guard and Army Reserve troops will continue to serve twelve months for each deployment.

A number of units in Iraq have already had their tours extended. The new policy will make deployments more predictable and equitable. “I think it is fair to all soldiers that all share the burden equally,” said Mr Gates. “In the end, I believe this new approach will allow the Army to better support the war effort, while providing a more predictable and dependable deployment schedule for our soldiers and their families.”

Senate Democrats slammed the move, which they said imposed an unreasonable burden on US troops and threatened national security.

“Once again the failures of this administration are being underwritten by our troops; the cost of this will fall on the backs of the brave men and women already serving in harms way, and their families.” said Senator Carl Levin (D-Mich.), chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) stated, “Today’s news that active-duty troops' tours in Iraq will be extended to 15 months is another in a long line of examples of how the President's Iraq policies are making us less secure. A bipartisan majority of Congress sees it, the American people see it and military experts see it.”

Senate Republicans expressed similar concerns for national security, as well as the potential erosion of the US military’s ability to recruit new soldiers.

“Having served as Secretary of the Navy when the concept of the all-volunteer force was being developed, and having observed, in the ensuing years, the extraordinary success of that system in providing for America's security, I feel strongly that we must carefully monitor the possible risks to that system that these extensions may generate,” stated Senator John Warner (R-Va.).

Senator Chuck Hagel (R-Neb) said, “Maintaining this tempo of operations will have drastic and lasting consequences for our nations military readiness and unnecessarily endangers our ability to react to any other crisis in the world. We are on a very dangerous course.”

“Our forces are stretched, there’s no question about that,” said Mr Gates. However, he said this is “a difficult but necessary interim step” to provide enough soldiers for President Bush’s decision to send an additional 21,500 troops to Iraq over the next twelve months, while still giving soldiers twelve months between deployments.

The announcement came at an awkward time for Presidential candidate Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.), who delivered an impassioned speech to rally support for the Iraq war and for his campaign, which has been dogged by his strong support for the unpopular war and the recent troop surge.

Meanwhile, the challenges for troops and residents in Iraq show no signs of easing.

On Thursday at dawn, at least one suicide truck bomb exploded on the al-Sarafiya bridge which spans the Tigris River, collapsing two major sections of the bridge and sending several cars hurtling into the river. An Iraqi Interior Ministry Official said that 10 people had been killed in the attack, with a further 26 wounded, most of them rescued from the water by police. The death toll may rise as more cars are searched by divers and pulled from the river.

Although the al-Sarafiya bridge connected a mostly Sunni enclave, Waziriyah, to a mainly Shiite district, Utafiyah, the bridge had nevertheless been regarded as safe to cross because neither neighbourhood was considered volatile. The bridge was built by the British in 1946 and was primarily used by minibuses and commercial vehicles traveling from central Baghdad to markets in the city’s north.

On Tuesday, US and Iraqi troops engaged insurgents in a blazing day-long gun battle in the al-Fadhil district of central Baghdad, a violent Sunni enclave on the Shiite-dominated east bank of the Tigris River. The battle erupted after four US helicopters were fired upon and forced to return to base. At the end of the day, a suspected 14 suspected militants were confirmed dead by the US military, with a further 8 captured and 12 wounded. Many bodies lay in the streets well into the night, with residents and military personnel unable to retrieve them amid the gunfire and chaos.

On Wednesday, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said the security situation in Iraq is “disastrous” and the humanitarian crisis is deepening. Hundreds of thousands of terrified residents are known to have fled their homes.

The daily violence has dealt devastating blows to the quality of life for average Iraqis: health care services are “stretched to the limit”, food shortages have led to an increase in malnutrition and basic infrastructure for electricity and sanitation have not worked for years in many areas.

“The conflict in Iraq is inflicting immense suffering on the entire population,” states the ICRC report entitled Civilians Without Protection.

“Civilians bear the brunt of the relentless violence and the extremely poor security conditions are disrupting the lives and livelihoods of millions. Much of Iraq’s vital infrastructure is in a poor state of repair, owing to lack of maintenance and security constraints have impeded repair work on electrical power grids, water and sanitation systems, medical facilities and other essential facilities.”

The occupation of Iraq is illegal. It was a pre-emptive strike on a country that did not attack us. It was sold to the American people based on lies. One of these lies is that Iraq had ties to the 9/11 attack. The true evidence of September 11th seems to be completely ignored by mainstream media. I have been researching 9/11 for over four years and there are serious unanswered questions from that day. I will propose 5. I hope you investigate these for yourself. 1) Never in the history of steel structures has a building collapsed from fire yet 3 did on 9/11; WTC tower 1,2 & 7. all three buildings came down at free fall speed with no resistance, tower 7 was never hit by an airplane yet came down symetrically in seven seconds? Additionally odd, tower 2 fell before tower 1 although tower 1 was hit first and tower 2 was hit with a glancing blow. The explosion/ collapse in tower 2 started above where the plane hit the tower? The explanation by NIST and Popular Mechanics says that the jet feul weakenned the steel and caused a pancake collapse, one floor falling on another. This does not account for the free fall speed of the collapse from both towers? Additionally, jet fuel burns at only about 1500 Degrees Fahrenheit in the open air and structural steel does not melt or even get significantly weakened until more than a thousand degrees hotter with a melting point of near 3300 degrees F. 2) There is no large plane wreckage in front of the Pentagon from the 757 that hit it. Taking from the official story, the 757 that hit the pentagon flew over a highway, parallel and 15 to 20 feet above the ground and impacted the pentagon between the 1st and 2nd floor. (official story) The airplane did not leave any markings or large debris (ex wings) on the front of the pentagon. the 757 suppossedly was sucked into a 16ft by 24ft hole, before the ceiling collapsed a 1/2 hour later, and incinerated. how did this plane hit only 15 ft above the ground after descending so rapidly without ever hitting the ground and flown by an amateur pilot? The 3 slides the pentagon released to the public shows a small shaped device flying horizontally, very low to the ground and leaving a small smoke trail. How come the Pentagon has not released video from the cameras mounted on the roof? lastly, after travelling through three rings of the Pentagon, the plane or whatever it was left a small circular exit hole in the third ring. 3. All four hijacked planes flew for an average of 40 minutes, 1 hour 50 minutes total, without any fighter jet intercept over NY and Washington. As you are aware, NY and Washington are some of the most protected airspace in the world. 4. Where is the plane wreckage from the plane crash in Shanksville, PA? in pictures and video all you see is a small ditch with no fires, plane debris, seats, bodies, etc.? 5. How was the Patriot Act and the War on Terror so quickly developed after 9/11? Was this new program a reaction to 9/11 or something that was worked on before September 11th and just conveniently ready for a terrorist attack? 9/11 was an inside job, a false flag operation. Sadly, the sophistication of this operation points more towards state sponsored terrorism than a small group of bandits inside a cave. I keep hearing government and military officials saying we are fighting Al Qaeda in Iraq and globally. Does this mean as the lone superpower we suppossedly were attacked by this rag tag group on September 11th and have been fighting them for the last 6 years without 'mission accomplished'? c'mon. How often have our leaders evoked the memory of 9/11 to rally our people for certain causes (i.e. Iraq)? Wakeup, they are using fear to sell the war program to the American people. fight on in peace. I hope you decide to investigate the truth of 9/11 for yourself. Namaste Shawn Cooper PS For a summary and the best documentary of 9/11 I recommend watching Loose Change 2. You can watch it for free here- http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7866929448192753501&q=loose+change+2&hl=en or visit www.wtc7.net or www.st911.org and start your own research... Lastly, alot of the public does not know that Rosie O'Donnell and Charlie Sheen are not the only ones questionning the official story of 9/11. Hundreds of scholars, public representatives, high ranking officials and survivors are questionning it as well. please see www.patriotsquestion911.com for more on this.

The controversial intelligence regarding W.M.D proved elusive! The ability to use chemical and biological weapons against our troops within 45 minutes of an order proved negative! This information came from a single source..... when challenged by U.K Members of Parliament and after much scrutiny this piece of intelligence was withdrawn! But not before it was claimed that mortars were the likey launchers! With a maximun range of 6 kilometers and a small payload they hardly constituted a threat! Our troops deserve better intelligence to prepare for and counter the attack of the enemy! Four years on little has changed this side of the 'Pond'. Yours for change to equip & prepare our Armed Forces Personnel for the challenges of the 21st Century! Buzzliteyear2007.

'FIFTEEN MONTHS' on an active tour of duty as intensive as Iraq can be in it's fragile state is too much! The Brit's only do six/seven months a stint! Other nation's will only do similar length tours! The 'psycological impact' of this will be very negative for 'Troop Morale'. One only hopes they will get two good R&R periods of at least four weeks each during the deployment to recouperate and relax from the trauma of war & battle! Keeping Mission focused for this duration is a great challenge physically and psycologically. I hope plenty of chaplains are on hand to assist with personal dilemmas on deployment! Back home a good social support scheme to assist with the transition from Conflict to normal society will be required to piece back the lives of the servicemen and women! As for the governing and political situation perhaps Congress should consider a Multi state solution based on the demographic regions currently occupied by the people! A Possible Solution? Kurds in the North; Kurd/Shia coalition Mosul/Kirkuk; Sunni,Mid Iraq. Shia/Sunni Baghdad......If this works otherwise Shia! Shia Arab South East. Failure to implement a 'Programme of Change' will result in a continuation of sectarian strife and division! Buzz Liteyear 2007.

Hi, This is a disastrous mess. It's totally out of control. The country's moved from the Saddam era into civil war and anarchy. I suppose the Iranians are smiling as their influence in the region continues to grow. What a blunder in U.S. foreign policy. I feel so bad for the ordinary soldiers who have to face the day to day situation in Iraq and for those Iraqi civilians who just want to get on with their lives. You know, wouldn't it be great if we could live in a world where those in power would have to personally face the results of their decisions. I mean, where if they wanted to declare war or to fight a war, they would then have to be on the front lines leading the attack. That would be very good and might lead to a lot more diplomacy and considered action. Bye now, Laurie p.s. The word "Right" on your "Buzz Right Back" button is misspelled. :)
