What’s Up Downtown

7 June 2013 Issue
LEGISLATIVE WINS FOR DOWNTOWN

HB630 Headed to Governor!

The DDD is very pleased to announce that the tax credit extension for the rehabilitation of historic commercial structures has passed and is heading to the Governor’s office for his signature. In 2011, Governor Jindal stated his support for the tax credits. In 2005, the DDD formed and led the coalition that created the HTC structure. The tax credits have accounted for hundreds of millions of dollars invested in Downtown. “We would like to thank all our partners in advocating for this legislation, particularly our New Orleans legislative delegation,” said DDD President & CEO Kurt Weigle. “This was our number one legislative priority for this session, as it has been a tremendous boon for Downtown New Orleans, helping to attack blight and revive Downtown.” Written by State Representative Walt Leger III, HB630 will extend the credits until 2018.

Also headed to the Governor’s desk is HB549. The bill establishes the MediFund for statewide advancement of biosciences and medical centers of excellence.

NEW ORLEANS WINNING THE BATTLE FOR TECH JOBS – FORBES MAGAZINE

Ranked #3, behind only Tech Heavyweights Silicon Valley and San Francisco

In the Forbes article Cities Winning the Battle for Information Jobs, researcher, Joel Kotkin stated that the New Orleans area was “perhaps the most dramatic player, where information is up 28% since 2009.” He describes the information sector here as “very broad-based, including companies in digital effects, videogames, software development as well as a burgeoning film and television industry.”

Starting in 2007, the DDD has worked with key stakeholders and partners to promote Downtown New Orleans and to attract companies in digital media such as LaunchPad, BarCampNola, Launch Fest as well as companies in other related industries. “New Orleans, particularly Downtown, continues to grow as a hub of innovation and creativity which means jobs for our community and a strong economy,” said DDD President & CEO Kurt Weigle. “Digital media jobs have more than tripled in two years. Downtown has added almost 400 digital media jobs per year for the last two years. The untold story, beyond GE and Gameloft, is the dozens of local companies like TurboSquid and Carrollton Technologies as well as the companies of the LaunchPad and Beta shared work spaces. All have had double digit job gains over the last couple of years and have become major forces in Downtown’s economy. We thank them for their investment and we look forward to continuing to work with our Downtown partners and build on these successes.”

TUESDAYS WITH EARL

LEH Launches Literary Lunch Series featuring Louisiana political classics.

This summer the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities will host “Tuesdays with Earl,” a lunchtime reading series aimed at professionals in the Central Business District. Participants are invited to bring their lunches for a scholar-led conversation about The Earl of Louisiana, the 1961 book by legendary author A.J. Liebling. The one-hour sessions will take place every Tuesday at noon, from June 18 through July 16 at the Louisiana Humanities Center at 938 Lafayette Street. Enrollment is free but limited to 40 people. To sign up, email boyles@leh.org or for more information click here.

DOWNTOWN PROUD!

Did You Know…

Sanitation and garbage collection is a constant challenge facing bustling Downtown areas around the country, especially those with as many historic districts as Downtown New Orleans. Many historic buildings do not have modern facilities to properly store their solid waste prior to collection but it is incumbent upon property owners and small businesses to adhere to city laws when placing their garbage curbside for collection. Did you know that garbage should only be placed curbside from 4 a.m. and 10 a.m. and again from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. It is against the law for roll carts or trash to remain in the public right of way outside of these collection times. Carts are to be stored on the user’s property so as not to interfere with pedestrian traffic – MC 138 -39 to 42.

It is especially important during the summer months for residents and businesses to adhere to the stipulated collection times. Be Downtown Proud and help the DDD maintain it as the cleanest neighborhood in New Orleans!

CITY ISSUES FILM NOTICE

A production company will be filming scenes overnight from Friday, June 7th to Thursday, June 13th and on Saturday, June 15th and Sunday, June 16th that will involve special effects and sounds, including intermittent simulated gunfire. Filming will take place from 7pm to 6am each night and will be limited to a closed set of Fox’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, within the 100 and 200 blocks of South Rampart Street, the 1000 block of Common Street, and the 1100 block of Tulane Avenue. These blocks are closed to traffic through June 24 as part of a traffic plan that can be found at www.nola.gov/film, the home page for Film New Orleans in the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Economy.

REMINDER: STREET CLOSURES FOR DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES
Production will have an estimated $80 million local economic impact

Several blocks in the Central Business District and Lower Garden District are closed for filming of the major motion picture Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. The 100 and 200 blocks of South Rampart Street, the 1000 block of Common Street, and the 1100 block of Tulane Avenue are closed to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic. The street closures will remain in effect through June 24, 2013 to accommodate filming.

All street closures and detours are marked by signage and uniformed police officers are on duty daily to assist with efficient traffic flow. For more information go to www.nola.gov/film.

Register Surveillance Cameras Through SafeCam8 Program

Downtown businesses and residences with private video surveillance cameras may now register them with the New Orleans Police Department through the Downtown Development District Web site as part of the SafeCams8 project.

The DDD is proud to partner with the French Quarter Management District and NOPD 8th District in the SafeCams8 program, a public safety initiative which allows property owners and businesses to register their privately owned video surveillance cameras directly with NOPD. The goal of SafeCams8 is to develop a comprehensive list of cameras in the 8th District that record activities occurring on the street or sidewalk. The database will allow the 8th District police to expeditiously contact a camera owner or operator when police access to a camera’s footage is needed to solve a crime or facilitate an investigation.

Participation in SafeCams8 is voluntary; there is no obligation to maintain a camera’s video surveillance capability or to provide video footage to the NOPD. All information provided by a camera owner or operator when registering with SafeCams8 is transmitted directly to the 8th District. No other entities have access to the registration information.

Darlings friends,
Another fabulous week has gone by in my beautiful New Orleans. I enjoyed very much all the events that I attended and, if you know me, there were quite a few.
I started my week by attending a press conference announcing that the Krewe of Boo New Orleans Halloween Parade will roll again with local artists’-made beads. The krewe will paradeOctober 26 in the French Quarter. Making the announcement was Brian Kern, son of “Mr. Mardi Gras,” Blaine Kern Sr., who founded the krewe and led its first parade in 2008. The krewe paraded for two years then disbanded.
To curate the throws, Kern turned to I Heart Louisiana, a company that specializes in locally-produced parade throws. Parade-goers will be able to rack up on locally produced throws including items from Fleurty Girl, ARC, Aunt Sally’s Pralines, Sucre, Zydeco Bars, McIlhenny Tabasco Sauce, Chewbacchus, The Bearded Oysters and many more local favorites! I have wonderful memories of participating in the first parade and then being a float lieutenant. It was so much fun and I missed it these past few years. Anyone interested in joining the Krewe of Boo can register at www.kreweofboo.com. You must be 18 and older to ride.

On Wednesday I was looking forward to attending the last of the YLC’s Wednesday Concert Series at Lafayette Square. The series concluded with performances by my darling friends, talented musicians Irvin Mayfield and Kermit Ruffins. They were joined on stage by curvaceous burlesque star Trixie Minx with two others. They perform at Irvin Mayfield’s Playhouse every Saturday night at the Royal Sonesta Hotel. As additional lagniappe, Rita Benson Le Blanc introduced this year’s Saints rookies. The public went wild and joined the fun.

I loved attending “Living Art,” a celebration hosted by lovely Maria Muro, President of Muro Media, publisher of New Orleans Living magazine and four TV shows on WLAE, and talented actor Bryan Batt at the Windsor Court. The fabulous evening honored local artists and their works and featured an evening of cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, live music and an auction to benefit WLAE and the mission to keep the arts and culture of our community thriving. It was a fun evening for a great cause!
My friends and I ended our evening at Burgundy Room of The Saint Hotel where the Yat Pack was swinging its fabulous music. From the big band classic sounds of Frank Sinatra and Bobby Darin to contemporary artists, they kept us on dancing the night away! It was a perfect ending to an artsy night!
On Saturday, it was time to attend the 2nd Annual International High School Gala at the magnificent lobby of the First NBC Bank on Baronne Street. I always look forward to seeing my darling friend, Anthony Amato, director of the prestigious school. The benefit showcased beautiful music, art and delicious food from across the globe. Performances included Chinese opera, belly dancers and stilt dancers. The annual gala is a charitable benefit that supports the rigorous programs of the IHS of New Orleans, a Type 2 charter school.
The evening’s entertainment kicked off with Danny Alexander’s Blues Band. Featured performances include a Chinese opera vocalist, an exciting performance by the Versailles Lion Dance Team, Middle Eastern dance by Coco, and a Chinese stilt dancer. Viva la Escuela!
On Sunday, I enjoyed the annual Smoothie King & Boys Town Louisiana Bowl-A-Palooza at Rock and Bowl. The entertainment with the Preservation Hall All-Star Band and Amanda Shaw and the Cute Guys band was superb. The delicious food, the strawberry Smoothie King smoothies and the bowling made it to be a very enjoyable afternoon.

I left early to catch one of the last performances of “Re-Designing Women” at the Mid-City Theatre. The sold-out play was hilarious and it was the latest wacky take-off from Varla Jean Merman, and “Shut Up Sweet Charlotte” co-stars, Jack Long, Ricky Graham and Brian Peterson. The next play at Mid-City, presented by the Running with Scissors ensemble cast, will be “Hell’s Belles,” a “comic cocktail of the Confederacy.” The play will run for three consecutive weekends: June 7-21. Visit www.midcitytheatre.com for more detailed information.
I ended my week, like I do in the past, by attending on the first Monday of the month, the seminar presented by the Museum of the American Cocktail at SOBOU. “From the Garden to the Glass” with Star Hodges, was very informative and the drinks were delicious.

Next week is going to be another social marathon for me. You are probably thinking, what else is new?

Today, The Eleventh Les Comédiens Français Lecture, “Louisiana Musical Treasures from the Bibliothèque nationale de France,” is taking place at 6:30 p.m. at The Historic New Orleans Collection Williams Research Center, 410 Chartres Street.

The evening will include a presentation on Louisiana musical pieces found in France’s Bibliothèque nationale followed by performances from pianist Peter Collins, violinist Joseph Meyer and soprano Sarah Jane McMahon.
Darlings, I am looking forward to attending today, Tuesday, June 4, the elegant, Southern Repertory Theatre’s Annual Gala, Le Bon Temp Soiree: An Elegant Evening of Cabaret hosted by New Orleans’ own TV and Broadway star and “Queen of Cabaret,” Leslie Castay, at Windsor Court Hotel’s Penthouse Ballroom. The fundraiser starts at 6:30 p.m. and will celebrate Southern Rep’s 26th season. Leslie will preside over the festivities, accompanied by piano guru Jefferson Turner. Featured entertainment will be Troi Bechet, Jessie Terrebonne Thompson, Lisa Picone, Jessica Podewell, Clint Johnson and Ann Mahoney, plus those wild ladies of burlesque, Fleur de Tease; the cast of “Next To Normal” (in which Leslie is currently starring at the Contemporary Arts Center), and more! Tickets are on sale now at www.southernrep.com or call 504-522-6545.
Leslie will also be the featured musical entertainment, along with pianist Jefferson Turner, at the upcoming Royal Sonesta’s Round Table Luncheon saluting Le Petit Theatre on Wednesday, June 19 at noon. Le Petit recently announced it will be reopening next month and will host five productions during the upcoming cultural season. I cannot wait.
The Annual Girls Night Out will be on Thursday, June 6 from 5-7 p.m. Comedian and actress Wanda Sykes will tend bar at the Girls Night Out fundraiser hosted by Cafe Adelaide’s Swizzle Stick Bar. Your pre-purchase of an “Ester Roll” ($500) or a “Big Bucks Betty” ($1,000) will give you the opportunity to cut up and chat with Wanda at an exclusive reception at 4:30 p.m.prior to the event. The purpose of Girls First is to provide girls with the opportunity to increase their physical activity through sport and movement. With their participation in sport, girls will experience greater self-esteem, greater self-confidence and are less likely to manifest at-risk behaviors.

On Friday, June 7 it will be time to don one of my beautiful summer dresses for the annual
Juleps in June. As in the past, the Faulkner Society will once again celebrate the beginning of the fun summer social season in the Big Easy with their annual fundraiser. This year’s event will take place at the residence of Greer & David Monteleone, Honorary Chairs, and catering will be by their famous Hotel Monteleone, a national literary landmark. Proceeds will be used to partially offset the costs of the Society’s projects for the general reading public, developing writers and young New Orleanians at risk of going through life illiterate.Last year, the Society’s projects had a positive impact on some 7,000 persons. I cannot wait.

June in New Orleans means the arrival of Creole tomato dishes on local restaurant menus, in farmers markets and at roadside stands. Typically the crop arrives in early June, which is why the French Market Creole Tomato Festival is always held the second weekend of that month.
This year’s 27th annual Creole Tomato Festival runs from Saturday, June 8 to Sunday, June 9 at the historic French Market. Hours on both days are from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Creole Tomato Festival-goers can also enjoy the 2013 Cajun-Zydeco Festival that same weekend at the Old U.S. Mint, directly across Barracks Street from the French Market. As in years past, the festival will take place on two stages on the Old Mint’s grounds. Once again, the festival (hosted by the Jazz and Heritage Foundation), has assembled an all-star collection of the biggest and most popular Cajun and Zydeco artists in Louisiana, including Rosie Ledet, Beausoleil, Geno Delafose & French Rockin’ Boogie, Nathan & the Zydeco Cha Chas, the Lost Bayou Ramblers and many more. There will be ten purveyors of some of the best food to be found in south Louisiana, plus a large arts market with some 30 sellers of hand-made art and crafts. Check back soon for a complete list of food and arts market vendors. Admission to the festival is free and open to the public. It is family-friendly with activities for children offered.

Darlings, yes, es, there is still time to sign up for the O-Mazing Race that take place on Saturday, June 6, at 2 p.m.

Presented by the Ogden Museum of Southern Art’s Kohlmeyer Circle you can spend an unforgettable afternoon in the French Quarter where teams of 4 to 8 people will pursue clues, testing their knowledge of all things Southern culture – music, art, literature and fashion – in this exhilarating, interactive scavenger hunt adventure.

This Sunday , June 9, there are two noteworthy events: The Sociedad Espanola is having Paella at CityPark with a lecture about he fabulous art deco work of Enrique Alfarez and The National Kidney Foundation of Louisiana is hosting a benefit : Le Gala de la Bonne Vie – a benefit for the National Kidney Foundation of Louisiana.
Alfred E. Lemmon, director of THNOC’s Williams Research Center, will give a presentation on the collection followed by a performance of pieces from this amazingly rich repertoire by pianist Peter Collins, violinist Joseph Meyer, and soprano Sarah Jane McMahon. The theater group Les Comédiens Français was organized in 1934 to promote, foster, and perpetuate the French language and culture in New Orleans. Great prizes such as rooms from the Hyatt Regency and tickets to a Tales of the Cocktail event!Presented by the Kohlmeyer Circle.Spend an unforgettable afternoon in the French Quarter where teams of 4 to 8 people will pursue clues, testing their knowledge of all things Southern culture – music, art, literature and fashion – in this exhilarating, interactive scavenger hunt adventure.
In the past, from the starting gun’s craze to the Quarter’s beignets, contestants found secret gardens and galleries, touched ghosts and tarots, got carts and body art, and serenaded our city while sipping its finest concoctions.
Before I begin to share my blog, “A Toast to New Orleans,” I want to express that my prayers and thoughts for those less fortunate who were affected by the tornados in Oklahoma.

I hope you enjoyed this past week as much as I did. I found myself toasting to my beloved New Orleans and its myriad of events more than I anticipated. Among the many fabulous events that I attended was a delicious Trinchero Family Estates wines dinner at Besh Steak House at Harrah’s Casino on Thursday night. It was spectacular and I was surrounded by darling friends.

The next Wine Dinner will be Thursday, June 20, with White Oak Winery. Dinner will be $75 per person, and seats are available now.

On Friday, I was a very busy social butterfly and started my evening by going to the Concert in the Courtyard at the beautiful Historic New Orleans Collection. It featured Mas Mamones, which brought a Latin sound to May Concerts in the Courtyard with Herbsaint Frappes provided by Sazerac. I had one and it was delicious.

I concluded my evening at the Annual Cork in the Park in the Botanical Garden Pavilion of the Two Sisters. The Wine Tasting event benefited City Park and it was sponsored by Merrill Lynch and Republic National Distributing Company.

On Saturday, I was time to don my beautiful white summer dress to attend first, the reception in honor of upcoming movie “Una Vida – A Fable of Music and Mind” at the lovely residence of visionary, Renaissance man Dr. Nicolas Bazan and his wife Haydee. The movie “Una Vida,” which is currently in production here in New Orleans, is based on a novel by Dr. Bazan of LSU and is being made completely in the city of New Orleans. It highlights jazz music, the city, and the struggles faced by Alzheimer’s disease patients and their families.

I left the lovely soiree to attend the party Habana Whites and Cuban Independence at the International Hotel. It was really lovely. I concluded my week by attending on Sunday, the annual fundraiser for NOCCA: Art and Soul. NOCCA and the Lupin Foundation’s Gala featured performances by the talented students and Alumni All-Stars. The delicious hors d’oeuvres and sangria were done by NOCCA’s Culinary Arts Department. There was an Art and Soul silent auction as well.
One of the happiest news items that I celebrated was the announcement by the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO) musicians and board of trustees that Carlos Miguel Prieto, the Adelaide Wisdom Benjamin Music Director and Principal Conductor, has signed a contract extension engaging him for an additional five years. The LPO also announced the appointment of James William Boyd as chief executive officer. Boyd has served as LPO interim managing director since July 2012.

Another announcement was by perennial King of Cork, Patrick van Hoorebeek and the krewe of Cork naming Claude Giraud as Grand Marshal for the 2013 Krewe of Cork Royal Street Stroll. Monsieur Giraud has vineyards in the district of Aÿ, and produces two labels: Champagne Francois Hemart and Champagne Henri Giraud. Francois Hemart is a non-vintage range, with all fruit coming from Grand Cru villages in Aÿ, while wines under the Giraud label are only released as vintage wines, again with all fruit from the best vineyard sites in Aÿ. The vintage wine sells for upwards of 100 euros per bottle, putting it in prestige cuvée territory. I cannot wait.

As you know, starting this Wednesday, May 22-May 25 is the annual New Orleans Wine and Food Experience. “America’s Favorite City” celebrates 21 years of Wine and Food. Twenty-one years ago a small group of forward-thinking wine lovers sat around a table concocting an event that today is considered one of the top wine events in the country. Someone born the year the event started would now be legal to drink at this year’s NOWFE.

The 21st anniversary NOWFE will include wine dinners hosted by more than 30 local restaurants; Vinola, NOWFE’s premium tasting event; the Royal Street Stroll sponsored by Rouse’s, NOWFE’s signature event set in the heart of the French Quarter; The Big Gateaux Show, the newest culinary confection; seminar series based on the current trends in wine and food; two days of Grand Tastings with over 75 restaurants and more than 1000 wines; and culminating with the Ella Brennan Lifetime Achievement in Hospitality Award Gala. Taking place in “America Favorite City,” as awarded by Travel + Leisure Magazine, NOWFE annually attracts over 10,000 foodies, wine connoisseurs, art aficionados and music lovers to New Orleans’ restaurants, shops and art galleries. You know I will be there!

From May 23-26 is The 10th Anniversary of Saints and Sinners Literary Festival. Visit the website for schedule and details: www.sasfest.org

Among the other events that are scheduled for this week and the weekend is the Fidelity’s Concert in the Park on Wednesday, May 22 at 6 p.m. at Lafreniere Park in Metairie. This free annual concert by the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra will feature many orchestral favorites.(See calendar below for details).

On May 24, 25, and 26 is the annual Greek Festival New Orleans during Memorial Day Weekend. It is celebrating its 40th anniversary of Greek Festival New Orleans, an amazing showcase of Greek food, music, and fun!

Also on May 24-26 is the New Orleans Home & Garden Show” at Hall I-1 – New Orleans Morial Convention Center. Not to be missed!

Have a great week and a happy Memorial Day weekend

—————————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Darlings,

I hope you are all resting after two very exciting 2013 Jazz and Heritage Festival Weekends. Compare to my birthday week, this week was subdued.

I started my week, by attending on Tuesday, the “Meet the Authors,” at the Cabildo. The Pirate’s Alley Faulkner Society and the Louisiana State Museum joined hands to celebrate publication of five new books by New Orleans authors. The authors were : former Louisiana Poet Laureate Brenda Marie Osbey, whose new
collection is History & Other Poems; mystery writer N. S. “Steve” Patrick, author of The Mysteries of Jack the Ripper; humorist
Judy Palmer, author of Southern Fried Divorce: the After Party; with Debra Shriver, Hearst Corporation Vice President and author of
In the Spirit of New Orleans; former New Orleans Assistant District Attorney Sanem Ozdural, whose debut novel is LIGA.

That evening it was also the lovely New Orleans Hispanic Heritage Foundation Scholars Reception at Gallier Hall. Forty-four scholarships were awarded that night to promising Hispanic scholars. I was so happy to see a new generation of talented scholars that will be continue our rich Hispanic heritage.

One of the many events that I enjoyed attending was the dedication of the Jazz & Heritage Center in honor of George and Joyce Wein. The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Foundation, Inc., the nonprofit that owns the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival presented by Shell, named the Center building in honor of the Weins, who founded the festival in 1970. George Wein, who earlier had founded the Newport Jazz Festival and many other events around the world, not only created the JazzFest, he also insisted that it would be owned by the nonprofit NOJ& H Foundation. Joyce Wein, a biochemist, was a vice president of their company Festival Productions, Inc., and a partner with George in all of their business ventures. She passed away in 2005 at age 76. By naming the new education and community center in the Weins’ honor, the Festival and Foundation preserves their legacy for future generations. I saw some many of my old friends at the dedication.

On Friday, I attended a lovely reception on the Occasion of the Investiture of His Majesty King Willem Alexander of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The soiree was hosted by Hon. Constance Charles Willems, Honorary Consul of the Netherlands and her husband Casey Willems at the Plimsoll Club.

That evening, my darling friend Sammy Steele , was totally surprised when 30 of his friends were waiting for him at the delightful, fabulous “My Way: A Musical Tribute to Frank Sinatra” at the National WWII Museum. If you haven’t seeing the show, it was superb and I knew every song.

I concluded my wek by attending a very informative, delicious and decadent seminar at SoBou of the Museum of the American Cocktail. Mixologist extraordinaires Dale DeGroff andSimon Ford hosted a Punch ‘n’ Rum Gumbo presentation at SoBou while Chef Juan Carlos Gonzalez created his best gumbo to compliment this great American tradition! It was so much fun.

Darlings, National Tourism Week is May 4-12 and I am looking forward to participating on Tuesday, May 7 at the National Tourism Week Rally, from 9 to 10 a.m. The parade will start at the Royal Sonesta, 300 Bourbon Street, and end with a press conference at Tableau at the Le Petit Theatre, 616 St. Peter Street. National Travel and Tourism Week is a tradition celebrated annually since 1984. It was established as National Tourism Week when the U.S. Congress passed a joint resolution in 1983 designating the week to be celebrated in May. In a White House ceremony, President Reagan even signed a Presidential Proclamation urging citizens to observe the week with ceremonies and activities in their communities.

Bayoubuzz’s: Tourism Week Video

That evening, Tuesday, May 7, it is the “Hidden Treasures” FGI New Orleans Presentation, abehind-the-scenes look at Hidden Costumes and Gems at the Louisiana State Museum.Showcasing over 200 years of historic Carnival costumes, fashion and accessories, there will be a guided tour by Wayne Phillips, Curator of Costumes and Textiles. Refreshments will be served. The tour will last approximately one hour, starting at 7:00 p.m.

Darlings, I am looking forward to the monthly Royal Sonesta’s Round Table Luncheon that I have the pleasure of hosting this Wednesday, May 8, at noon in the Fleur de Lis Suite of the Royal Sonesta Hotel.
I have been invited to attend on Thursday, May 9, the media night of the Broadway musical “Wicked” that will be playing here from May 8-June 2 at Mahalia Jackson Theater. Not to be missed!

The other event that I am looking forward to is on Friday, May 10, the Ogden Museum of Art’s Sippin’ in Seersucker. Darlings, don your best seersucker ensemble – or summer chic – for this party that kicks off the summer social season. Hosted by the Shops at Canal Place, the event benefits the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. Partygoers will enjoy complimentary hors d’oeuvres from local restaurants and luscious libations, shopping specials, entertainment, and raffles, including entertainment, shopping, wine, “Be a Tourist in Your Own Hometown,” indulgence and Kohlmeyer Circle Art. 37th annual Society for German-American Studies conference

The Society for German-American Studies (SGAS) will present its annual conference in New Orleans, May 9–12, in collaboration with The Historic New Orleans Collection. This year’s conference will celebrate a German-New Orleans homecoming and German contributions to New Orleans rich culture and history at the Royal Sonesta Hotel. . Registration is open and local rates start at $25. This year’s SGAS conference—held in a different city every year, always with a focus on that place’s German heritage—celebrates a German-New Orleans homecoming. The earliest German settlers to Louisiana arrived in 1721, only three years after the city of New Orleans was founded. Establishing a community upriver from the city, the settlement in and around present-day St. Charles Parish gave rise to that area’s nickname, the “German Coast.” The 19th century saw an influx of immigrants from all across the globe, including Germans, into the city via the port. They brought with them a preference for lager beer, helping it to become a common brew in the city, and they organized large citywide German festivals, such as the city’s first Volksfest held in 1854. New Orleans was even home to the country’s first recorded German theater, noted in the Daily Picayune in 1839. THNOC, which houses an extensive collection of materials relating to the German influence in Louisiana, is proud to welcome SGAS members to the city and to introduce local residents to the national organization. For more information on the conference or to register, visit the SGAS website at http://sgas.org/symposium/.

We are all rebels at one time or another in our lives. As a wine journalist, I respect wine rebels.
One of my hero’s in this special category is Juan Magana, considered in Spain and the rest of the wine world as a Visionary. Juan is a man who understood the future of wine development in the Navarra region of Spain and its terroir. Juan Magana made sacrifices and took illegal risks to meet his wine making goal a reality.
Juan Magana’s story could be made into a movie. Juan was born into a family of farmers that grew wheat, olives and grapes. Juan was in charge of agricultural accounts for the family farm. That was not what he wanted to do. He escaped the farm life, left the family and moved to the big city of Madrid to follow his dream, which was advertising.
Through the years Juan became very successful in advertising. After sometime, he realized something was missing from his life. And that was grapes and winemaking.
Juan sold his luxury apartment in Madrid after asking himself this question: ‘”Who is making the best wines in the world?”. The answer was simple, Bordreaux.
The climate and terroir between Navarra and Bordeaux is similar. Juan decided because of the similarities to plant the French varieties of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon on his land.
This created a problem. The Spanish government did not allow the planting of Bordeaux grapes in Navarra. Vineyards were forced to comply.

Juan Magana did not.
Juan found a nursery in France that sold their vines to Pomerol and St. Emillion. By fate, the nursery owner was Spanish and knew Navarra was a perfect fit for his vines. He happily sold his vines to Juan, knowing that they were illegal in Navarra. Without a permit, he smuggled the vines through the Pyrenees, safely, on a donkey, to Navarra.
He planted the vines, illegally, and named his first plot after the owner of the nursery.
His dream of having the first Merlot grapes in Navarra was history. The problem was that his money was running out and the vines needed years to mature before producing his first vintage.
To make money, Juan decided to sell these illegal clones to other winemakers throughout Spain. His contraband business was thriving, while he waited for his vines to mature. Juan knew he was creating a problem for himself by selling these vines illegally. He told me at a recent lunch at his vineyard that he created “ A problem, yes , but, a beautiful problem”.
Basically what he did was to travel to France to purchase the vines and bring them back illegally through the Pyrenees. He would then graft the vines, make cuttings and sell them to Spanish bodegas.
The Spanish government visited his vineyard, often, asking what type of vines were planted on his land. He always replied that the vines were Tempranillo.
His 1975 plantings were ready to harvest in 1978. When harvested, tasted and tested, his 1978 vintage was too bold and tannic for the Spanish people. They are used to Tempranillo. The Spanish were used to softer wines. His wines from 1979-1981 were a failure, as well.
The 1982 vintage changed Juan’s life. After his long journey, his wine was rated the ‘Best in Spain’. It made Juan famous throughout the world. And the Spanish government, eventually accepted the new clones as legal clones to grow in Spain.
What a victory for Juan’s hard work.
Now Juan had to sell his wines. He found a customer from Seattle who purchased 500 cases of the 1980 vintage. He shipped the wines, only to have the shipment returned because the bottles sent were 70ml instead of 75ml.
Due to our laws, the wine could not be sold. The 1980 vintage spent two years in customs and now sits in Juan’s wine cellar., along with his wonderful future vintages.
The wines of Bodegas Vina Magana are now world-famous and are easy to find in wine shops throughout America. Ole Imports handles his wines.
My favorites and recommended wines to try are: Magana 1982 and 1985, Dignis 2007, Baron De Magana 2007, Magana Merlot 2009 and Calchetas 2008.

Zulu Coconut Decorating

Louis Armstrong was the King of Zulu in 1949. Get creative with the Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club Under the direction of ‘Mac’ and his Junior Zulus, kids can decorate and keep their very own Zulu coconut, while learning about the history and traditions of this beloved New Orleans institution.

Second-Line Umbrella Decoration & Celebration Station Sat & Sun, 12 NOON to 5 PM

Second Line Parade Sat & Sun, 2:15 PM to 2:30 PM (participants should meet on the 2nd floor of the US Mint at 2PM, or arrive EARLIER to decorate and keep your very own umbrella)

Kids can make their own second-line umbrella to keep. These umbrellas can be used by the kids in our second-line parade led by Treme Brass Band on Saturday and New Birth Brass Band on Sunday. Second line is a tradition of brass band parades in New Orleans. The “first line” is the main section of the parade, or the members of the actual club with the parading permit as well as the brass band. Those who follow the band are called the “second line.” “Second lining” refers to the style of dance, in which participants walk and sometimes twirl a parasol or handkerchief in the air. It has been called “the quintessential New Orleans art form – a jazz funeral without a body.”
