New Orleans Saints, Green Bay Packers ready for real NFL referees

saints refereeThe next time the New Orleans Saints take the field, they might feel comforted that their opponents will be in gold and green representing the Green Bay Packers and not the black and white stripes representing the replacement referees.

The NFL struck a long-awaited deal with its referees Wednesday night to end its lockout of the sport’s regular officials after public outrage over the quality of referring by the substitute umps. The new refs will return to the field on Thursday.

The kicker seems to be the controversial call at the end of the Green Bay Packers-Seattle game in which the refs awarded a last second touchdown to the Seahawks although many observers felt the ball was intercepted by the Packers.  The score cost Green Bay the game.

The NFL and NFLRA are pleased to announce that they have reached an agreement tonight on an eight-year collective bargaining agreement, subject to ratification by the NFLRA.
"Our officials will be back on the field starting (Thursday) night," Commissioner Roger Goodell said. "We appreciate the commitment of the NFLRA in working through the issues to reach this important agreement."
"Our Board of Directors has unanimously approved taking this proposed CBA to the membership for a ratification vote,” said Scott Green, president of the NFLRA. “We are glad to be getting back on the field for this week’s games."

The NFL and its locked-out officials agreed to terms on a new deal late Wednesday night which would put officials in place for this weekend’s games — including Thursday night's game — according to sources close to the situation. ROUNDUP ON REF-GATE Now that an agreement is in place, see how the replacement official fiasco blew up and was finally solved. According to the sources, the final sticking point related to the much-discussed pension plan, but that stalemate finally ended. The sides are currently working on paperwork according to sources and at least half of the locked-out officials must approve the new deal, but sources said that is expected to be a formality. Sources said the officials are expected to convene in Dallas on Friday to do things such as collect uniforms and gear." > a few seconds ago

I'm kida sad. It sounds like the NFL/Ref issue has ended. My 11 year old son just finished his interview for this week's game. It was between him and John Madden. Madden was having issues because he couldn't use his hands to speak, so, I thought we had this in the bag.

mass2On July 4, 1778, George Washington doubled liquor rations for the soldiers quartered in Princeton, NJ, as a way to celebrate Independence Day. It’s fitting, therefore, that the Fourth of July is America's top-selling beer holiday, according to the Beer Institute. It estimated, in 2013, that sales of beer on the 4th could total $1 billion, doubtlessly higher today. “In moderation,” claims a CA brewery investor, Grover McKean, “beer is tasty and healthy.” Who could disagree?

indy dayII know the calendar says we are approaching the 4th of July, but, it just doesn’t feel like Independence Day.

Perhaps it should.  It’s hot as heck.  The airlines have been packed. The hot dogs are ready for grilling.  The umps are saying, "play ball". The patriotic activities are scheduled. The fireworks are ready-for-blasting.

Yet, it just doesn’t feel like independence day.

bill rights2To President Thomas Jefferson, July 4th celebrated more than the signing of the Declaration of Independence. He thought it was a link to the future. The message prominent colonists sent to King George III led to the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, the initial and most prominent feature of which is the First Amendment that guarantees free speech. It’s part of the country’s fundamental essence that each man and woman can say what they feel about government, or anything else, proving President Donald Trump needs some civics lessons.
