New Orleans Saints: Brees’s Knee, Surprise Sharper, Payton Fox Sports Pick
Written by

Brees played through the same type of knee injury that sidelined Cutler.

Brees and Saints coach Sean Payton stressed there are various degrees of medial collateral ligament sprains, depending on how significant the tearing is in the ligament.

Brees had a mild MCL sprain and Cutler's injury was diagnosed as a Grade 2 MCL sprain, which indicates some level of tearing. Often, players will miss two-four weeks with such an injury, but it depends on the severity.

"I had an MCL sprain and was able to rehab it and play with a brace," Brees told CBSSports while doing  promotional interviews for the NFL's Play 60 campaign at the Pro Bowl in Hawaii. "Nobody knows the extent of Cutler's injury except for him, so nobody can comment on it fairly. It's unfair to do that just because you don't know."

Saints guard Carl Hicks and safeties Darren Sharper and Malcolm Jenkins received second-team, All-Pro honors.

Saints safety Darren Sharper was selected to the AP's second team All-Pro. He played in eight games and started only one. The voter who picked Sharper either doesn't know the game well enough to vote, doesn't follow the game closely enough, and/or doesn't care about the awards sufficiently enough to merit the right to have a vote...Trivia time: Name the Saints player who wore jersey number 00? March of time: Players on the winning Super Bowl team this season will earn $83,000. Losing players get $42,000. Winning placers in the first Super Bowl in 1967 were given $15,000 and losers $7,500...Thirty-second commercials for this year's game are $3 million...

RIP: Ed Dyer, 71, All-American Auburn fullback, linebacker and kicker died of cancer on Sunday...How accurate is Drew Brees as a passer? I watched one of those hokey Sports Science comparisons between a pro athlete and some rather arbitrary metric. I thought no way was Brees going to be more accurate at hitting the bull eye that a world-class archer. Well, I was very wrong....Packers players on injured reserve will be omitted form the official team photo. Saints linebacker Scott Shanle: "We had a lot of guys on IR, too, (referring to 2009 team) We included everyone because everyone had a part in getting to the Super Bowl, the way it should be."...The injury that is keeping LSU defensive tackle Drake Nevis out of the Senior Bowl is plantar fascists. That's the same injury Eli Manning had last season with the Giants. Nevis is expected to be healthy in time for the NFL scouting combine...

Former Saints center LeCharles Bentley is in Mobile this week, working with the media, writing guest columns for AOL Fanhouse and serving as a radio host in Cleveland....Saints coach Sean Payton will serve as a Fox analyst for the Super Bowl...LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson is in Mobile this week to meet with NFL teams in rested in his talents...Payton, on hiring a replacement for Saints secondary coach Dennis Allen who became the Broncos defensive coordinator: "We have time. I'm going to sit down and go through and really take time and evaluate all our options." Assistant secondary coach Tony Oden could be an option

The Saints had the highest local TV market rating of all NFL cities for 2010, according to Neilsen. They earned a household rating of 43.9,which means 43.9 per cent of all teams in the market were tuned in to their games.

The Steelers were second with a 41.9 rating and the Packers were third at 41.3.

SOME hither,  others yon: The Dallas Mavericks have signed Peja Stojakovic off waivers in an attempt to replace some of the scoring lost when Caron O'Neal went down with a season-ended injury. Former Hornets 3-point shooter Stojakovic was waived on Thursday by Toronto. He's been limited to eight this season with the Raptors and Hornets because of knee problems, Stojakovic has averaged 17,2 points per game over  his  career...Former Hornets center Tyson Chandler is also with the Mavs.

Lil Wayne complains in the latest Rolling Stone that he was disrespected by Dwayne Wade and LeBron  James because they did not acknowledge his courtside presence at a Heat home game. Hmm.  Lil Wayne you're a propane rapper fresh out of prison, How much respect do you think you deserve?...The Washington Wizards entered the weekend 0-20 on the road, That's the toughest time anyone has  had on the road since Tom Joad in the Great Depression...

A Massachusetts homeless man using borrowed computers won ESPN'com's fantasy football grand prize, a $3,500 Best Buy gift card. The man was crestfallen to learn Best Buy does not sell cigarettes and gallon wine... I've said it a million times: I don't exaggerate...

Trivia answer: Wide receiver Kenny Burrough, team's first-round draft from Texas Southern in 1970...Following is a list of shows Payton will participate in:

Thursday, Feb. 3 -- Super Bowl SportsCenter  Special, 2 p.m.
]Friday, Feb. 4 --  SportsCenter Special "The Champions". 2 p.m. Payton will take  part in a  round-table discussion among ESPN analysts who have won Super Bowls.

Sunday,Feb. 6 -- Sunday NFL Countdown, 1:20 p.m. Payton will be part of ESPN's four-hour pregame show and will work with the "Monday Night Football" team of Mike Trico, Ron Jaworski and Jon Gruden from Cowboys Stadium.

It must be nice when you can get the rules written just for you.

There must come a time when even the most disinterested, blasé, apolitical person living has to look up from whatever else occupies his interest and say, “Wait a damned minute. This just ain’t right and we’re not gonna do it.”
