JEDCO

The Jefferson Parish Economic Development Commission (JEDCO) and JenCare Neighborhood Medical Centers are pleased to announce the opening of two new medical facilities in Jefferson Parish. JenCare Neighborhood Medical Centers, a primary and special care practice for senior citizens, will open in Kenner and Gretna in early October.

JenCare will hold its first grand opening event in Kenner today, October 4th, at 1918 Williams Boulevard. The event runs from 11:00AM to 3:00PM. Residents are invited to tour the facility and take advantage of the medical center services.

Headquartered in Florida, JenCare is a growing national network of 24 family-owned, physician-led primary care practices. The company is dedicated to delivering exceptional health care to senior citizens. The new medical centers will provide a wide-range of medical services, primarily for Medicare-eligible, low-to-moderate income seniors with complex medical conditions. Services will include everything from routine check-ups, ultrasounds, and x-rays to dental cleaning, lab testing, and pharmaceutical assistance. JenCare also has a transportation service, which will bring patients to and from the medical centers.

Louisiana will be the fourth state to host a family of JenCare medical centers. The company plans to open four new practices in the area, including a facility in Metairie. This will create between 90 to 120 jobs across the region.

Deadline Approaching for BREW High-stakes Pitch Competition

Entrepreneurs must submit applications by October 12, 2012

 

Baton Rouge, La. (October 4, 2012) – Applications to pitch a business idea during Baton Rouge Entrepreneurship Week’s (BREW’s) high-stakes pitch competition are due October 12, 2012.  This event will be similar in format to ABC’s popular show, Shark Tank, with companies competing for investment commitments before a live audience.  Five regional business leaders have agreed to come prepared to invest $25,000 or more in entrepreneurs or start-up companies if the deal is right.  SeNSE will lead and facilitate the evening’s pitch competition.  Applications to pitch an idea are now being accepted by visiting the BREW website, www.celebrateBREW.com.  BREW is presented by the Greater Baton Rouge Business Report and Louisiana Technology Park and supported by the Baton Rouge Area Chamber (BRAC).

 

“We encourage everyone around the state, and even the country, with a solid business plan to submit an application for this event,” said Adam Knapp, President and CEO of the Baton Rouge Area Chamber.  “This is an enormous opportunity for entrepreneurs and start-ups.  Winners of this competition have an opportunity to receive a cash investment and valuable mentoring from extremely successful entrepreneurs”

 

The regional business owners who have come forward as investors and judges in this competition include the following:

  • Todd Graves is the owner and founder of Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers, a fast-food restaurant specializing in fresh chicken fingers.  Graves started his business with one store in Baton Rouge, LA and now has locations in seventeen states.  He has been recognized in Nations Restaurant News, Chain Leader, QSR, Entrepreneur, Rolling Stone, and USA Today.  He has appeared on FOX News Network's “Your World” with Neil Cavuto and “FOX and Friends”, as well as highlighted on CNN Headline News's “Pulse on America” series.  Graves was also featured in Entrepreneur's Young Millionaires cover story.  In 2002, the Greater Baton Rouge Business Report named him the Young Businessperson of the Year.  In 2008, Graves was named an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year and in 2010 he was awarded the SCORE Award for Outstanding Socially Progressive Business. 
  • Mike Wampold is the founder and owner of Wampold Companies, a real estate company focused on development, construction, major capital renovations, and property management that employs over one hundred people in Louisiana.  The company has worked on several well-known buildings in the Capital Region including City Plaza, II City Plaza, Chase North Tower, Shaw Plaza, and the recently completed Renaissance Hotel.

Wampold Companies has developed, constructed, and/or performed major renovations on approximately 4,000 multi-family housing units located throughout the state and currently owns and manages over 700,000 rentable square feet of commercial office properties.  In 2001, Wampold was named Businessperson of the Year by the Greater Baton Rouge Business Report.  He is also a member of the Louisiana State University Foundation and a past board member of the Baton Rouge Area Chamber.

  • Lane Grigsby is the founder and chairman of the board of Cajun Industries, a nationally recognized construction leader that has successfully completed over $2 billion in contracts providing a broad range of services to various markets, including government work, water quality, power, manufacturing, and industrial.  Grigsby founded the Baton Rouge branch of the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC), which became the premier chapter in the United States.  He served in every position, including chapter president and state president and spent eighteen years on the board of directors.  He has received ABC's Man of the Year award twice.  He has also served on the board of directors for the Baton Rouge Area Chamber, The Shaw Group, advisory board of the College of Engineering at LSU, and the Construction Industry Advisory Council, and is a past chairman and current member of the board for the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry.
  • Joe Agresti is president and co-owner of Mercedes-Benz of Baton Rouge.  He has increased sales in all departments by over 200 percent and profits by over 400 percent since he joined the business.  He was awarded the prestigious Mercedes Benz Best of the Best Award in 2005.  In early 2010, Mercedes-Benz of Baton Rouge was named Silver Best of the Best for their performance during 2009.  This award is the pinnacle of Mercedes-Benz recognition, saved for only ten dealerships nationwide.  In the same program, Agresti was recognized by Mercedes-Benz USA as the top ranked dealer in the United States for 2009.  Additionally, he has been selected as Louisiana’s Young Business Person of the Year in 2007 and Louisiana’s Top 40 Under 40 in 2008. 
  • Kevin Couhig is the founder and CEO of Source Capital.  He presently serves as the chairman of PreSonus Audio Electronics, is on the board of managers of Bon Carre Business Center LLC, and is on the board of US Agencies Insurance Company, where he is the chairman of the corporate governance committee.  Couhig has been a director at the Baton Rouge Area Chamber, Baton Rouge Convention and Visitors Bureau, City Club of Baton Rouge, Louisiana Business and Technology Center, and the Baton Rouge Soccer Association.  He was an entrepreneur-in-residence at the Levy-Rosenblum Institute at Tulane University and was named Entrepreneur of the Year in 1985 by the Greater Baton Rouge Business Report.

 

All applications must be submitted through the website by the close of business on October 12, 2012.  Applicants chosen to participate in the live pitch competition will be notified prior to or during the week of October 29, 2012.  Pitches can be made by entrepreneurs or start-ups from

anywhere, but must be willing to move to the Baton Rouge area should they be chosen and accept funding from an investor wishing to invest locally.

French Quarter Festivals, Inc. (FQFI) announces the return of the Musician Sponsorship Program, an exciting program launched in 2012, designed to help keep the "largest free music festival in the South" a high quality event that celebrates the best of New Orleans culture, while keeping it accessible to everyone and contributing to the economic well-being of the French Quarter, the City of New Orleans and the State of Louisiana.

French Quarter Festival was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support for the Musician Sponsorship program in 2012. Over 100 sponsors signed on to support local musicians representing a variety of genres on twenty two stages during the four day event. The 30th annual French Quarter Festival takes place April 11 - 14, 2013 and twenty one of the twenty two stages at French Quarter Festival will feature Louisiana Artists exclusively! The 22ndstage is an International Stage featuring Traditional Jazz musicians from around the world. Over 1,300 local musicians perform annually at French Quarter Festival.

Musicians say that they absolutely love playing French Quarter Festival and look forward to it every year. This is a relationship FQFI is proud to nurture and grow. In addition to being beloved members of the community, musicians enrich New Orleans' culture simply by doing their job. Musician Sponsorships have a direct impact on the local economy.

French Quarter Festival's Musician Sponsorship program will facilitate the relationship between Artists and Sponsors, eliminating the Musician's responsibility in securing a Sponsor and freeing them to focus on their performance. Because French Quarter Festivals, Inc. is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization, sponsorships are tax deductible - another great benefit for sponsors.  With the launch of this program, Louisiana businesses are invited to participate in this annual community celebration, making a major impact, and enjoying the benefits of sponsorship. Contrary to what many think, a free music festival is not really free, but the French Quarter Festival has grown to become the "largest free music festival in the South." It continues to be voted "locals favorite festival" year after year and is third in economic impact for the City of New Orleans (Mardi Gras ranks number one and the Super Bowl is number two, when it is held in New Orleans).

French Quarter Festival is not just a fun, high quality event. It annually generates over $300 million in economic impact with over $15 million in direct tax revenue going to the city and the state as a direct result of the festival. Over 570,000 people attended French Quarter Festival in 2012.

According to Marci Schramm, Executive Director of French Quarter Festivals, Inc., "There is something very special about this type of support. Music sponsors come from all corners of our community and from all over the country. They share a love of local culture and care about preserving what makes Louisiana so special." Current music sponsors include everyone from beloved brands like Zapp's, to heavy hitters like Chevron and Humana. The family of music sponsors also includes law and accounting firms, doctors, veterinarians, realtors, restaurants, hotels, retail shops, individuals who love the festival and many more. "Like the diverse styles of music heard at French Quarter Festival, we also embrace an eclectic mix of sponsors who love the celebration and what it does for the community," adds Schramm. "Music sponsorship is rewarding and fun for those who participate - a sponsor can do as much (or as little) as they wish to tell the world that they support French Quarter Festival. Some sponsors truly enjoy the experience of going on stage and introducing "their" band while some just like to hang a banner during the sponsored act's set."

Sponsors may sign up at the "Shorty" level ($500) or as "Pops" ($10,000+) - or anything in between. Supporters truly help keep New Orleans music alive, while being recognized by over half a million people at the annual French Quarter Festival.

French Quarter Festival, now in its 30th year, has grown to be the largest free music festival in the South, attracting over 570,000 people to the historic neighborhood each year. French Quarter Festivals, Inc. is a self-sustaining non-profit organization. Festivals are made possible through sponsorship, participation fees and onsite beverage and merchandise sales. The production budget for this free event is over a million dollars, including costs for employing NOPD officers, sanitation, fire watch and EMS personnel.

Senior Counselors, Medicare Beneficiaris

Louisiana Department of Insurance and Senior Counselors Helping Medicare Beneficiaries Prepare for 2013 Open Enrollment  

Louisiana Department of Insurance Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) counselors are conducting statewide outreach efforts to assist Medicare beneficiaries in selecting their health and prescription drug plans. SHIIP counselors will also assist seniors with health insurance claims, supplemental and long-term care insurance policy comparisons, and the Medicare appeals process. Community sessions are planned statewide over the next several weeks.

Because the opportunity to make changes to Medicare plans only comes once a year, I urge Louisiana seniors to contact our SHIIP counselors, who will be available by phone and in-person, to make sure they are on the plan that’s best for them,” said Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon. “These plans can change, so the option you selected in 2012 may not necessarily offer the best coverage for you in 2013.”

OPEN ENROLLMENT

The Medicare open enrollment period is the timeframe during which Medicare beneficiaries can make changes to their Medicare plans each year. The period begins October 15 and ends December 7, with plans taking effect on January 1, 2013.

Counselors will help beneficiaries in choosing between the Medicare Advantage plan (all-inclusive plan) or Original Medicare plan, along with its Medicare (Part D) Prescription Drug Plan coverage and Medigap policy (Medicare Supplement coverage) option that covers medical co-pays, deductibles, and in-patient hospital fees.

During the open enrollment period, beneficiaries can switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan, switch from a Medicare Advantage plan back to Original Medicare, switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another, join a Medicare (Part D) Prescription Drug Plan, switch from one Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan to another, or decline to have a Part D Prescription Drug Plan.

Louisiana SHIIP counselors will be conducting open enrollment presentations across the state over the next few months. Community informational events have been scheduled in Ascension, Caddo, Calcasieu, Catahoula, East Baton Rouge, Jefferson Davis, Ouachita, St. James, and West Feliciana parishes. Additional meetings are being scheduled and Medicare beneficiaries and those newly eligible are encouraged to be on the lookout for a meeting in their area by visiting www.ldi.la.gov/SHIIP/calendar.

BEWARE OF MEDICARE FRAUD AND SCAMS

During the open enrollment period, Medicare beneficiaries need to be especially vigilant to protect their personal information from scam artists. Some states have reported individuals receiving calls from scammers requesting banking information for the purpose of issuing new Medicare cards. 

LDI advises beneficiaries to safeguard their Social Security and Medicare numbers from falling into the hands of criminals by never giving them out to anyone whom they did not contact. Medicare beneficiaries should also check their healthcare statements for any red flags suggesting that their information may have been compromised, such as charges for services not received or duplicate billing. Beneficiaries are encouraged to contact their providers or plan if they do not understand the charges billed.
