Louisiana Sports: Super Bowl, Cam Newton, Patrick Peterson, Zach Mettenberger
Written by

An MRI revealed today that Hornets forward Trevor Ariza has a right medial ankle sprain. He is questionable for Saturday’s game against the Lakers.  Ariza suffered the injury last night when he came down on the back of Thunder forward Jeff Green’s foot in the third quarter of last night’s game in Oklahoma City.

SUNDAY'S matchup between the Steelers and the Packers will set record ratings for Fox, according to poll in The Hollywood Reporter. The poll showed that 78 per cent of Americans plan to watch the game -- up five per cent from last year's New Orleans Saints-Indianapolis Colts thriller. The men make up the bulk of the ratings increase, with 89 per cent of males polled saying they would watch the game. Sixty-eight percent of the women will watch the game. The poll shows that the Super Bowl is the second most important day with the exception of Christmas in in an American male's life. The poll shows that men get excited for the Super Bowl more than their anniversary, birthday or Thanksgiving. The poll also shows that Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is the most disliked player going into Sunday's game and the fourth most disliked player in the league behind Brett Favre, Michael Vick and Tom Brady...Peyton Manning has replaced Tiger Woods as America's most powerful athlete...

SOME hither, others yon: Urban Meyer didn't recruit Patrick Peterson to Florida because  the coach  thought he was too immature and the Gators would have their pick of defensive backs, so they stayed away. The LSU All-America is from South Florida. Peterson also changed his name, and that caused some people to question his character. Well, Meyer was wrong about Peterson. His three seasons at LSU were spectacular with punt and kickoff returns, interceptions and hard-headed play. He never quit on the back end of the defense and helped other defensive backs with coverage. Carolina needs a defensive tackle, but every team can use a cornerback like Peterson. Carolina has the first pick in the draft and is going to have to make a tough decision.  If they are building for the future, they won't trade this pick.and select Peterson...

Zach Mettenberger to have a Cam Newton effect at LSU? The Tigers are entering the 2011 season with high expectations because they may have solved their quarterback problems. Mettenberger will challenge Jordan Jefferson for the starting quarterback job this spring. He's a 6-foot-5, 245-pounder from Butler Community College (Kan.) Mettenbeerger is already enrolled and attending classes at LSU/ He began his career at Georgia, but dropped out of school and now is the highest-ranked junior college quarterback in the nation.  The top junior college quarterback in the 2009 season was Cam Newton, who also began his career at an SEC school (Florida( before going on to a JC and signing with Auburn...

Former Saints linebacker Scott Fujita, now with the Browns, picks Green Bay to win the Super Bowl because " the Packers' quarterback  Aaron Rodgers went to Cal Berkley, and Berkley is the center of the universe." Fujita, as you already knew, went to Cal. A Super Bowl win on Sunday for Rodgers would give him the same number of wins his predecessor, Brett Favre, had,,,Sean Payton will be behind the ESPN microphone on Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Super Bowl Sports-Center Special. On Friday, he'll take part in a round-table discussion among ESPN analysts who have won Super Bowls. On Sunday at 1:30 p.m. he'll will be part of ESPN's four-hour pregame show and will work with the "Monday Night Football" team of Mike Trico, Ron Jaworski and Jon Gruden...

A pocketful of wry from reader Steve of Pascagoula:"A man had 50-yard line tickets for the Super Bowl. As he sits down, a man comes down and asks if anyone is sitting in the seat next to him.

"'No,' he says. 'The seat is empty'

"'This is incredible,' said the man. 'Who in their right mind would have a seat like this for the Super Bowl, the biggest sports event in the world, and not use it?'

"He says, 'Well, actually, the seat belongs to me. I was supposed to come with my wife, but she passed away This is the first Super Bowl we haven't been to together since we got married in 1967.'

"' I'm sorry to hear that,' said the man. 'That's terrible. But couldn't you find someone else -- a friend, relative or even a neighbor to take the seat?'

"The man shakes his head. "No, they're all at the funeral." 2011 Team Recruiting Rankings:

catRarely, have I seen few issues that have generated as much raw heat, tension, and passion than the Confederate monuments controversy.

Just as existed during the real civil war, where brothers battled brothers, social media is the battleground, particularly Facebook, pitting friend against friend.

On one side of the tense divide, there are those who are protecting the New Orleans civil war era monuments.  Burnt in effigy, forever, is the symbol of Mayor Mitch Landrieu for up-ending what the monument protectors consider to be the loving civil society of New Orleans.

Lately, events have turned somewhat militaristic.

Some protectors of the Confederate monuments have been staying vigilant, in person and online, even surveilling during the wee hours of the morning, waiting for the next Mayor Landrieu attack. On Sunday morning, with protections of snipers, masked workers and a dumbstruck audience, the worst of all of the monuments was cut and carried., the Liberty Monument.
