Landrieu Says Recovery In Full Gallop Despite Lower Census
Written by

New Orleans Mayor, Mitch Landrieu, released a statement today that did not mention the lower than expected census numbers but did strike a note that the city would continue rebounding from recent events such as Katrina.  Landrieu described New Orleans's recovery is in "full gallop".

The 2010 Census count determined that the New Orleans population is 343,829 people. An interim Census count last year found the city's population standing at about 355,000.

By comparison, in the 2000 Census, New Orleans’s population was 484,674 people.

As a result of the census results, the area will be negatively affect regarding redistricting and federal dollars.

Landrieu said in his written statement:

“Our progress has always been much bigger than a population number. Today, our recovery is in a full gallop. Billions of dollars of investments are hitting the ground.  We are redesigning the criminal justice system from the ground up.  Our schools are being transformed into centers of excellence where every kid has an opportunity to get a quality education.  And our health care delivery system has been hailed as a national model.

“Over five years after Hurricane Katrina, our story is one of redemption and resurrection. We are not rebuilding the city we were, but creating the city we want to become, brick by brick and block by block.

“Accurate Census estimates in future years will ensure that city government and local non- profit organizations will have the federal funds necessary to provide our growing population with important services.”
