NFL Owners, Players Money Split Model Causes Divide; Peterson Debate
Written by  // Tuesday, 22 March 2011 14:42 //

The heart of the dispute between the players and the NFL is this: The players in the past have received about 50 per cent of the gross revenues, and as the gross revenues continue to rise, the owners no longer want to stick with that model, because 50 per cent of $10 billion is.....$5 billion.

Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sentinel: "Typically, that's always happened. You always raised the prices, but we're at the point where you can't raise prices any more. Everybody accepts that but our costs keep going up.

"You have people earning double digits millions plus a year. Where do you think the line of reason falls?"

In other words, the owners think they're paying the players too much and the owners think they can squeeze them into taking less.

Saints owner Tom Benson: "I don't want our employees to feel sorry for themselves during this period of time. So we aren't laying anybody off, and we're not cutting anybody's pay."...Rita Benson LeBlanc has been selected to the Sports Business Journal's "Forty Under 40" list for the third time...Most of the writers at the owners' meeting believe the NFC South is the league's toughest division. In these parts, we call that preaching to the choir...

Three principal owners are not in attendance at the NFL league meeting in New Orleans:  Pats owner Robert Kraft has a private medical family matter. Seahawks owner Paul Allen and Lions owner William Clay Ford are also absent, which is typical for them.  Allen was apparently busy testing out his new Russian fighter jet. Jets owner Woody Johnson showed up on crutches after breaking his lower leg during a biking accident....

Saints special teams coach Greg McMahon and former special teams star Steve Gleason watched Tulane's players at Monday's spring practice. They showed a video of Gleason making some special teams plays, including his block against Atlanta when the Saints returned to the Superdome after the storm. Gleason is working on a master's degree at Tulane

Looking for an interesting opinion piece on Adrian Peterson’s “slave trade” comment?

Check out ESPN’s NFL players lose ground in labor debate by Jemele Hill.

Hill said, “For the record, I'm on the players' side. Peterson's analogy was awkward and ignorant, but I get that he was likely thinking about how the average former NFL player's life span is 52 years old, how some players can barely walk after retiring in the NFL and how disposable some of them can be in such a violent game.”

But, Hill also underscored probably why the players are not creaming the billionaire owners on this labor dispute.

Hill said, “The fans won't easily forget that a Vikings running back NFL player set to make $10.7 million this year compared his situation to slavery, or that the players are also pressuring incoming rookies to boycott the NFL draft, an event die-hard fans love to watch.”
