Louisiana Senate, Jindal's Supported Plan For Congressional Redistricting

The Republican-controlled Senate gave Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal 20-19 defeat Tuesday that would split Calcasieu Parish and divide Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes in two for US Congressional redistricting purposes.  The defeated legislation separated Terrebone and Lafourche parishes which are currently in the 3rd Congressional District.

Jindal has supported the plan by Sen. Neil Riser.  That measured maintains two northern seats as a result of the reapportionment requirements due to the most recent census results. Louisiana will have six Congressmen instead of seven.

The Riser plan features two north-south districts.  One would be anchored in Shreveport, the other in Monroe.

Sources say that the bill will be brought up again for consideration.
