Louisiana sports: LSU, Jordan Jefferson, Mettenberger, New Orleans Hornets, Lakers, Zephyrs
Written by

The "new: Jordan Jefferson looked like the old Jordan Jefferson in LSU's spring game.  He completed just 4 of 14 passes for 102 yards with an interception and no touchdowns. Maybe it's been so long since LSU has had a good quarterback, the fans, media and Les Miles no longer know what one looks like.

Zach Mettenberger was the most talented quarterback on the field in the spring game.

Jefferson on how he handles competition: "I handle competition great. I'm a competitor and I'm going to keep on pushing it until I'm the top guy. Competition is something that I'm always going against and  so I'm just going to give 110 per cent."...Police say ex Bears and Saints quarterback Bobby Douglas (1976-77) faces trespass and criminal damage charges following an incident with an ex-girlfriend at her suburban residence in Waukegan, Ill. He was arrested Wednesday night...

Some hither, others yon: Prediction: Lakers in five. The Lakers should have no problem winning this series. The only reason the Lakers will lose a game is the inevitability that they might coast in one of the games. That will probably occur in Game 3 when the Hornets will feel they're in a must-win situation, are at home and the Lakers no longer feel the urgency in setting the tone for the series. The Lakers swept the Hornets 4-0 in the regular season series. Two of those victories came in double-digit margins. The Lakers considered Memphis and Portland to be more difficult matchups....

Ruben Gotay drilled a tenth inning solo home run to give the New

Orleans Zephyrs to a 6-5 win over the Memphis Redbirds.  The win is the Zephyrs

fifth consecutive to bring their record to 5-3 for the season.  New Orleans

starter Dallas Trahern made his first start for the Z’s since May of 2009 and

pitched 5.1 innings allowing three runs.  Trahern is coming off of Tommy John

surgery that had him miss all of 2010.  The Z’s scored four runs in the fourth

inning.  Mike Cervenak ripped a three run home run to grab a 4-2 lead.  Memphis

rallied to tie the game with a two RBI triple from Shane Robinson in the seventh

inning.  Dustin Richardson pitched two scoreless innings and set the stage for

Gotay’s solo home run.  Frank Mata pitched a perfect ninth to earn the save.

New Orleans hit a season high three home runs in the game and managed 6 runs on

7 hits.

Game Notes –The Z’s added pitcher Dallas Trahern from Class AA Jacksonville and

assigned Mark McLemore to Class A Jamestown.  The sweep of Memphis is the first

since 2008.  The Z's are 2-0 in extra inning games and lead the PCL with 4 one

run victories.

Coming Up: The Zephyrs home opener is Friday night.  RH Tom Koehler will get the

start for the Z’s and will face RH Brett Tomko.  Radio: WMTI 106.1 FM

mass2On July 4, 1778, George Washington doubled liquor rations for the soldiers quartered in Princeton, NJ, as a way to celebrate Independence Day. It’s fitting, therefore, that the Fourth of July is America's top-selling beer holiday, according to the Beer Institute. It estimated, in 2013, that sales of beer on the 4th could total $1 billion, doubtlessly higher today. “In moderation,” claims a CA brewery investor, Grover McKean, “beer is tasty and healthy.” Who could disagree?

joe mikaAs Donald Trump faces the top world leaders this week, including a face-time with Vladimir Putin, and as his healthcare proposals face an uphill climb, his poll numbers for how the nation views him could be better.

According to a morning Consult/Politico poll released Wednesday morning, his tweets, including that against MSNBC's Mika Brzezinski, and his personality are not helping him, at all.

indy dayII know the calendar says we are approaching the 4th of July, but, it just doesn’t feel like Independence Day.

Perhaps it should.  It’s hot as heck.  The airlines have been packed. The hot dogs are ready for grilling.  The umps are saying, "play ball". The patriotic activities are scheduled. The fireworks are ready-for-blasting.

Yet, it just doesn’t feel like independence day.

bill rights2To President Thomas Jefferson, July 4th celebrated more than the signing of the Declaration of Independence. He thought it was a link to the future. The message prominent colonists sent to King George III led to the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, the initial and most prominent feature of which is the First Amendment that guarantees free speech. It’s part of the country’s fundamental essence that each man and woman can say what they feel about government, or anything else, proving President Donald Trump needs some civics lessons.
